The Broken Angel & Her Overprotective Brothers-Chapter 380: The Gathering Storm
Emily stood in front of the huge window that provided her a clear view of the vast forest down the cliff. Her eyes scanned the horizon as if trying to catch a glimpse of the impending storm. She could feel it in her bones, the looming threat of war that hung heavy in the air. It was coming, and she knew she had to be ready.
It had been weeks since the first rogue attack and things had only became worse since then. Several villages, towns, and cities were lost because of those attacks. Several lives were lost, and the entire world was overtaken by the terror that was killing everyone slowly.
She was no longer in the City and had moved into a secret villa deep in the mountains along with Kaiden and Shadow. She spent the entire week training and honing her skills while staying in touch with Aleron to make sure that her family was safe and sound in the Fae Realm.
Her brothers were clearly mad at her for what she did, but she didn’t regret her choice at all. Knowing that all of them were safe in the Fae Realm, under the protection of Aleron, gave her relief.
She heard footsteps approaching her and she immediately knew that it was Kaiden. She also knew why he was coming to find her. As the Alpha of the biggest and most powerful werewolf pack, he could no longer fight the war from the back, he needed to join his forces at the frontline if they wanted to stop those rogues from hurting any more innocent people.
"Are you feeling alright, Angel?" He asked once he was standing right behind her. His strong arms snaked around her waist and he pulled her back against his chest before placing his chin on the crown of her head.
Emily allowed the back of her head to rest against his shoulder before she relaxed her entire body. These little moments with Kaiden and Shadow were the only time she was able to allow herself to let down her guard and stop pretending that she was holding strong.
"I am." She answered his question before she asked her own question. "When are you leaving?"
Kaiden’s body went stiff immediately and Emily was able to feel his pain. The last thing he wanted to do was to leave her, but he didn’t have the option to stay with her any longer. "We don’t have much time. The rogues are mobilizing, and our forces are weakening. I’m leaving within minutes."
Emily nodded, her jaw set with an unreadable expression on her face. "You will take care of yourself, right?" She asked and there was no hiding the fear in her voice.
Kaiden immediately turned her body to face him before he cupped her face between his palms and made her look at him. "I promise, Angel. I will not let anything happen to me. I will be waiting for you there. Just let me go first and make sure that we have the upper hand in the situation. I can’t risk your safety."
Emily wanted to protest once again. The thought of reminding him that she was a good fit for this war almost made her repeat her words that she had mentioned in front of both her mates several times before. However, she knew that there was no point in doing so. These two men had stopped listening to any of her reasoning. At least, they weren’t completely prohibiting her from being a part of the war.
"I know, Kaiden. I’ve been training every day, mentally and physically. Yet, I can’t shake off my fear. So far, they have been cunning, and their attacks have been devastating. It’s like they’re always one step ahead of us."
Kaiden sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I know. Their organization is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. But we can’t let that stop us. We have to keep fighting, keep pushing forward until we find a way to stop them."
As they spoke, they heard Rylan calling for Kaiden. "Is it already time? Aren’t you going to even wait until dinner?" Emily asked and despite her initial determination to not act weak, she was unable to let go of him. The war didn’t scare her for herself, it scared her because of her loved ones. She was afraid that she would lose them.
"I’m sorry that everything is happening like this, Angel. How much I wish to forget about everything and stay here with you. Unfortunately, we both know that I can’t do that." Kaiden didn’t try to hide just how devastated he was feeling.
The two held each other tightly in a hug and it took everything for Emily to hold back her tears.
"I’m sorry, Em, but we have to go," Rylan’s familiar voice pulled the two of them apart.
Stepping out of Kaiden’s arms, Emily moved toward her best friend and pulled him into a hug that Rylan immediately returned.
"Please take care of yourself."
"Be safe, Em."
Both of them spoke at the same time, causing them to chuckle out loud. Rylan pulled back from the hug but not before placing a soft kiss on her forehead. "Don’t worry too much. I will look after your mate." He promised and gave her head a soft pat.
The three of them headed downstairs and found Shadow waiting in the living room. "Everything’s ready." He told Kaiden before the two men surprised both Emily and Rylan as they suddenly hugged each other. It was a brief hug but a warm one nonetheless.
"Take care of her." Kaiden told Shadow who nodded his head in return. "I promise. I will not let anything happen to her." 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
Kaiden and Rylan bid their goodbyes once again before they climbed into the car and drove away. Emily and Shadow stood there and watched the car disappear into the darkness of the night.
"Let’s head upstairs. I have prepared your favorite dishes for dinner." Shadow said as he intertwined their fingers and pulled Emily toward the staircase.
