The Billionaire's Rental Wife Is A Hot Shot-Chapter 66: Karma always plays fair
Chapter 66: Karma always plays fair
Evelyn’s cold eyes quickly softened at the unexpected arrival of Kiana. She looked at Agatha who apologetically shook her head, indicating the little girl had thrown a tantrum to come down stairs.
"What truth, Mommy?" Kiana asked again, her eyes squinted with worry and suspicion. Though she hadn’t heard what Sabrina had said earlier, her mommy’s words scared her, and her little heart was not ready to take in another shock. Agatha walked downstairs, and Evelyn used the opportunity to finish her discussion with Sabrina.
"So, tell me, Mrs. Grey. Should I tell you in detail about her parents’ accident that night?" Evelyn challenged taking a step forward, her low voice causing Sabrina to break into a thin sweat. Turning to Dominic beside her mother, Evelyn smirked, "Oh, maybe we should discuss it in front of the media, with proof of course."
Even the Reign family wasn’t expecting Evelyn to know anything about the accident. And Avery couldn’t be any glad that someone finally brought it up! They had given enough chances for this family to heal and blame Zevian for their mistakes, and it was time for them to face the truth.
"Oh, nothing baby," Evelyn replied to Kiana’s question earlier, whom Agatha had carried to her. Scooping the little girl in her arms, she faced the Greys again and continued, "I was telling your grandmother that you want to be with us not her. Isn’t that true?"
Kiana instantly nodded, a pout formed on her lips as she stared at her grandmother. Sabrina forced out a smile at the little girl, and when she tried to reach for her, Evelyn took a step backward, clearly conveying her motive. And much to her shock, even Kiana seemed weary of her, clinging tightly to this woman whom she deluded to be her mommy.
"Why don’t you stay in the room, Kia? Let us elders talk this out." Evelyn coaxed the little anxious bear in her arms, gently patting her head.
Kiana softly sighed and nodded, obeying her request without throwing a tantrum. It surprised Sabrina how much control Evelyn had over her granddaughter, and what ached her the most was an outsider had been living the position that belonged to her daughter. Be it the wife of this powerful heir of the Reign Family or Kiana’s most trustable person.
"Please don’t bully Daddy and Mommy." Kiana’s quiver brought Sabrina out of her thoughts. When she looked up, the little girl continued with tears brimming in the corner of her eyes. "They are very stressed, Nana. And I don’t like anyone who hurts them."
Sabrina’s heart clenched at her words, her granddaughter’s sad expression breaking whatever arrogance and hatred she had for this family. Even Dominic wasn’t expecting his sister’s daughter to get this attached to this woman, making him wonder if he was ruining his life just for his mother’s peace.
"Take her upstairs, Agatha. Please change her into something warm, she is cold." Evelyn requested Agatha who nodded and picked up Kiana who was still in her school dress. Once they were out of their sight, away from the hall, Evelyn turned to the Greys again.
"So, let’s recall what happened five years ago in detail. Shall we?" Evelyn said, her words causing Sabrina to flinch. Her breathing suddenly turned heavy, the memories flooding back and Dominic immediately supported her shoulder, staring at Evelyn to stop right there.
"Not only did you manipulate your daughter to marry Zevian, you even filled her brain with rubbish thoughts that giving this family an heir would make her a formidable figure." Evelyn started, her every word piercing Sabrina’s heart like a sharp dagger. "And, your daughter got pregnant with another man’s child and filled this family with false hopes, cheating each one of them."
Rosalind’s heart ached as Evelyn started to point out things, one by one that her son had to go through. Even Theodore who had calm felt a lump in his throat, guilty for making Zevian agree to this marriage. Natalie who had been strong slowly broke up, tears streaming down her face. "And when he filed for a divorce, unable to take this shit anymore, what did you do?"
Zevian who had grown numb to this pain felt a ripple in his heart at his wife’s words, but it wasn’t the same for his family and Evelyn was not only hurting Sabrina but everyone else in this room. Sighing out loud, he finally decided to speak, "Evelyn, stop it. It’s no use talking about the past-"
"Shut up!" But Evelyn cut him off midway, surprising even the maids who were secretly hearing the heated fight. Glaring at her stupid husband, she continued, "Stop being a saint and taking their blows when it was never even your fault!"
"Yeah!" Avery agreed with her best friend. Getting up from her seat, she continued, "Just because we are silent doesn’t mean we are not aware of the truth, Sabrina Grey."
"What truth? That your cousin killed my sister when all she asked was to give me another chance to change herself." Dominic grumbled back, his hold tightening around Sabrina who was gasping for air.
"No," Evelyn shook her head in response. Staring at Sabrina, she continued, "The truth is that your mother was the person behind that accident."
Both Dominic and Natalie who were new to this shocking news widened their eyes in response, while the Reign couple only sighed, glad that someone finally had the guts to speak about it.
"What nonsense are you talking?" Dominic grumbled, his voice full of rage.
"Your mother," Evelyn began, her voice steady and firm, "tampered with the brakes on Zevian’s car that night. She knew the weather was bad, knew a storm was coming, but she was desperate enough to hurt Zevian—maybe even put him in a coma for a year or two. And Katherine... Katherine was aware of it. She agreed to the plan, willingly putting her own life at risk." freewebnøvel.com
"If you still want to pretend like it was never the case and pin Zevian as guilty for your daughter’s death, go ahead, Mrs. Grey. We have enough proof to open this case again and put you behind bars." Evelyn challenged, not caring that the elder woman was having an anxiety attack.
"Karma always plays fair, Mrs. Grey. Your mistakes have cost your daughter’s life. And you alone are responsible for her death! So, stop playing the victim role and making my husband a murderer."
"S-stop it, please!" Sabrina spoke up, her words coming in heavy gasps. The way her body was trembling and she clutched to her son, it was clear Evelyn wasn’t lying. Dominic didn’t know how to respond, his eyes meeting Natalie’s that only were filled with disgust now.
"And Mr. Grey," Evelyn’s voice brought him out of his thoughts and when he looked at her, she continued, "I don’t know what lies your mother has filled you about Zevian and his intentions of playing Kiana’s father role. But let me also clear this last confusion."
Turning to Zevian, Evelyn sighed and continued, "Your sister’s last wish was for Zevian to take care of Kiana. It only suggests that she trusted him more than her own mother, or her family. And trust me, Kiana is lucky to have found such a great father." Pausing for a moment, she added, "We both know what growing up without a father’s love feels like. So, let’s not snatch it away from the poor girl."
Evelyn’s last sentence hit Dominic strongly. There was honesty and raw pain in her voice, and having heard about her story, he knew they had grown up similarly, devoid of father’s love.
"Please stop hurting him more. I beg you." Evelyn added, her voice pleading this time unlike how cold she had been until now.
Dominic simply stared at Zevian, the guy he had admired a lot in the past. For the past five years, he was clouded with hatred, his mother’s lies only fueling it more. But now when Evelyn had opened the secrets everyone was desperately hiding for their reasons, he could only feel guilty toward Zevian.
Sighing out loud, Dominic looked at Evelyn and said, "Take care of her." It felt like she was the right woman to raise his little Kia, the way she spoke and didn’t let anyone hurt the people she treasured, filled him with a hope that Kiana would be protected and cherished well.
Evelyn nodded with a small smile, while Avery sighed out loud, sensing that the storm that had been glooming over this family finally cleared up. Rosalind clenched her husband’s hand, tears forming in the corner of her eyes as they finally got rid of this toxic battle.
"If you ever feel like seeing her, don’t hesitate to call me. Kiana likes you very much and we won’t cut her off completely from you." Evelyn added, knowing how much this family needed her.
Dominic nodded in response with a smile, grateful for her offer. They saw Katherine in Kiana, wanting to see her grow up just like his sister did and Evelyn seemed to understand it. Grabbing his mother’s hand, he dragged her out of the house, having a lot to talk with her.
"Oh, finally! It’s over!" Avery mumbled and rushing to her best friend, she hugged her tightly. "You are the best, Evy!"
Evelyn smiled and hugged her back, a sigh escaping her lips. She had been anxious throughout though she pretended to be cold, but luckily everything ended well. Her eyes reached out for Zevian who was hugging his sister. Rosalind joined the girls and hugged Evelyn, thanking her before she took Natalie to the room, while Avery walked Theodore out, giving the couple some space.
Silence filled the hall as everyone left, the tension thick and awkward. Evelyn who had been bold and even scolded him earlier, didn’t know how to confront him now. The way he looked so lost and sitting idly only made it worse for her. Clearing her throat, she said, "Erm, I am going to check on Kiana."
When there was no response, Evelyn turned around and walked to the stairs. But before she could climb up, Zevian grabbed her wrist and pulled her into a tight hug. Evelyn’s heart raced as his hands encircled around her waist, embracing her tightly.
"Thank you," Zevian mumbled, his sweet voice bringing a smile to Evelyn’s face. She slowly hugged him back, her hands wrapping around him firmly.
"You don’t need to thank me for it, silly," Evelyn mumbled, imitating the way he used to talk to her way back in the past. Whenever she needed his help, he would show up instantly and rescue her from the mess. Looking up at him, she added, "I am not gonna let anyone bully my man except for myself."
Zevian’s eyes subtly widened in surprise at her words, before he broke into a small chuckle. He hugged her again and Evelyn smiled, glad to have taken the burden off his shoulders.
