Chapter 124: Grace I

Anansi fell to the ground, one hand twitching on the ground and his legs cut underneath him.

Xaen stood to the side, breathing hard, but she had a grin on her lips. "Well, it wasn’t all bad. I thought that weapon is going to kill me. Where did you get it? I like it for myself."

Her face shone with unmasked greed, and she took a step towards Anansi, her eyes on the weapon.

Severin didn’t make any moves from his place and merely watched. He didn’t trust Anansi, the shadow Lord’s shadow inside him is simply too sly.

And as if it was proving him right, thin shadows connected from his cut hand and drilled into the stump, and at the same time, those at the legs did the same.

The scythe whipped up, missing Xaen’s head by inches as the woman drew back, flinching and glaring. "As expected of you, shadow Lord, you are like cockroach."

Anansi didn’t reply. He lifted the scythe, turned the sharp curve towards him, and then slammed it into his chest. There was a horrible wet sound of something sharp piercing the chest and ribs breaking.

Anansi opened his mouth and screamed!

Severin gritted his teeth as the sound dug into the ears like claws. His eyes narrowed as he withstood it. All the while, his eyes stayed on Anansi.

Darkness boiled out of him. Dry, cracked hands that were filled with remnant dust came from inside his mouth. The fingers clamped down on his cheek and then pushed them wider.

His mouth was torn open and... and a head came out of the mouth that was ripped free. The rest of the body tore and was shredded to the ground.

A black skeleton that looked suspiciously like shadow Lord combined with Anansi stood before them.

"You... where is Anansi!" Xaen demanded.

The Shadow Anansi smiled, its skull moving unnaturally to show the smile. "I am Anansi. And shadow Lord. I have consumed his essence, his being. I will be able to use his powers for a while."

His hand reached for the scythe, still surprisingly buried in the chest of the skeleton, and he pulled it out with ease.

Black smoke-like energy trailed the head of the scythe, and he dragged it on the ground. Where the black smoke touched, it crumbled.

Severin raised his brows. "Is this the true power of this weapon?"

Even Xaen was wary. She took several steps backwards, and her remaining hand was clenched into a fist. "So this is the power you are hiding."

Shadow Anansi shook his head. "No. This is the power that Severin gave me. But it’s incomplete. I want that Grace!"

"You can come for it. How about it, insect queen? You defend and I’ll attack. I have a feeling he can’t easily destroy the Grace energy, and your wings are good at shrugging things off."

Shadow Anansi didn’t want to give them the chance to strategize, because he suddenly leaped, crossing the distance between them in a flicker.

His scythe raised backwards.

But Severin didn’t move.

Because Xaen was suddenly there, her body jerked to the right, and her wing spread so it could cover them both.

Bam!

The scythe struck the wing, and Xaen grunted as the force shook her body and dug her feet into the ground like nails.

Shadow Anansi snarled, and he lifted his weapon again. At this time, she dropped her wings and showed Severin.

His hand was raised, and he flicked his fingers. From his thumb, green energy thrummed to life, turning into a bright arrow as it took flight and shot towards Shadow Anansi.

The latter jumped back, and the scythe came down in a downward arc.

Ping!

It struck the scythe, but the green arrow didn’t move from its path or lose momentum.

Bam!

The arrow struck Shadow Anansi on the chest and hurled him back like a catapult.

Severin leaped after him, and Xaen joined him.

They began to fight.

Just like Severin said earlier, his energy couldn’t be stopped by Shadow Anansi. But the bastard could hurt Severin, especially since he didn’t have a shield.

So he used Xaen as the shield.

They fought with a speed that Severin would never have been able to keep up with previously. They whirled and twisted. From the palace, they darted outside, their attacks creating large craters on the ground.

But at the end, Shadow Anansi wasn’t a match for two opponents of the Lord rank, since their powers also complemented each other so well.

Shadow Anansi was pinned to the ground by several rods of Grace energy, and Xaen stood over him. Her eyes were wide and shining with a glint. "You... you cost me my hand and my summon wing! I won’t let you go. We are coming for you, and together with Veyron, we will kill the real you!"

Shadow Anansi was grinning. "Come. I’ll be waiting for you. I nearly killed this bastard anyway."

Severin took a step forward, a scythe of green energy formed in his hand, and he swung it.

Straight at Xaen’s neck!

The woman twisted at the last moment, her wings jerking up as she jumped away, deflecting the attack. She sneered. "I didn’t think you would be the first to attack. So you were planning on betraying me!"

Severin frowned at her. "Cut the bullshit. You are going to kill me anyway after you take down Anansi. You and Veyron come for the seed, so either now or later, I would die.

"All of you here are against me. I only used you to take down Anansi first."

Her face was filled with fury, and she hissed. "Then come and try your luck. A mortal is still a mortal even if you have a fancy weapon!"

Severin smiled. "I’ll wait a bit, thank you."

Her eyes flashed. "What? You think you...!!"

Suddenly, her body was seized by a strong cough that shook her and knocked her teeth together. She took in a sharp breath that was released with the vomiting of black blood tinged with green.
