Surprise Marriage to a Billionaire-Chapter 328: Recognition
Chapter 328: Recognition
Rain’s gaze shot to his face just in time to see his eyelids flicker. Slowly, hesitantly, his eyes opened.
"Oh my God!" Rain exclaimed, her voice trembling with a mix of joy and disbelief. Without wasting a second, she reached out and pushed the emergency button.
Within moments, the door burst open, and a team of doctors and nurses rushed into the room. Rain stepped aside, her eyes never leaving Alexander. Tears of relief streamed down her cheeks as the medical staff quickly assessed his condition.
"He moved... he opened his eyes," she whispered to herself, her heart pounding as hope surged through her like never before.
At that moment, nothing mattered to Rain but the fact that her husband was finally awake. Her heart raced as she stared at him, barely daring to blink for fear that it was all just a dream or a cruel hallucination. Yet, the faint flicker of life in his eyes was undeniable.
"Thank you, God," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. Inside, she kept praising and thanking Him for granting her prayers, for showing mercy, and for bringing Alexander back to her.
She bit her lower lip, trying to steady her breathing, her hands clasped tightly together as they fidgeted. The waiting felt eternal as the medical team busily assessed Alexander’s condition, their focused expressions giving nothing away. Rain’s eyes darted between them and her husband, her heart pounding in anticipation.
Dr. Lambert stepped closer to the bed, "Alexander, I’ll perform a quick check to assess your condition."
He turned to the nurse beside him, who handed him a penlight. "Xander, I’m going to check your pupil response. Look straight at me." He clicked on the penlight and shined it into each of Alexander’s eyes, observing their reaction. "Good. Pupils are reactive and equal."
He then placed his stethoscope against Alexander’s chest. He gently examined Alexander’s arms and legs next, testing for muscle response.
Rain, keenly observing from the sidelines, found herself releasing a sigh of relief whenever it seemed Alexander was responding well.
Dr. Lambert asked, "Do you feel any pain anywhere? Headaches, dizziness, or discomfort?"
Alexander frowned, his voice still hoarse. "No pain. Just... tired. Everything feels heavy."
"That’s normal after being immobile for a long time," the doctor assured him. "Your body needs time to regain strength." He then pulled out a small reflex hammer, tapping gently on Alexander’s knees and ankles to check his reflexes. Each response was sluggish but present.
"Now, Xander, I’m going to ask you a few questions to assess your orientation. Do you know where you are?"
Alexander furrowed his brow. "A hospital, common Dr. Lambert. You’re stuck here at Meta Doctors Hospital."
"Correct. Do you know what year it is?" Dr. Lambert asked.
Alexander paused, his eyes narrowing in thought. "2019, right? October?"
Rain gasped audibly, her hand flying to her chest. That was five years ago!
Dr. Lambert glanced at her briefly before turning back to Alexander, his voice calm but tinged with concern. "That’s close, but it’s not 2019 anymore. Do you know why you’re here?"
Alexander shook his head slowly. "No. What happened? Why am I in the hospital?"
Dr. Lambert exchanged a glance with the nurse before speaking. "You’ve been in a coma, Xander. For over a week. Do you remember anything about the events leading up to this? An incident?"
Alexander’s confusion deepened. "Coma? No, I don’t remember anything like that." His gaze darted to Rain, who was standing silently, her face pale.
Rain’s heart pounded relentlessly in her chest as she observed Alexander’s confused expression and hesitant glances at the people around him. Her mind raced with possibilities, none of them comforting.
’He just woke up. It’s normal,’ she tried to reassure herself. Yet, the nagging doubt in her mind refused to fade. The look in his eyes, the absence of recognition when he glanced at her, it all pointed to a truth she wasn’t ready to face.
She clenched her fists tightly, her nails digging into her palms. ’No, this has to be a misunderstanding. He’s just disoriented. It happens after a coma.’ She forced herself to breathe, to stay calm, but her thoughts betrayed her.
Dr. Lambert placed a reassuring hand on Alexander’s shoulder. "Memory gaps like this are not uncommon after waking from a coma. Your brain needs time to adjust and recover. We’ll run some tests to monitor your progress, including a CT scan and blood work. For now, rest is the most important thing."
As the nurse continued noting down vitals and setting up equipment for further evaluations, Alexander occasionally glanced at Rain, his expression unreadable but marked by a clear sense of unease.
"I need to see my father. My brother, William. Where are they?" Alexander’s voice broke the silence, firm but tinged with frustration.
One of the nurses glanced at Rain and said softly, "I’ve already called them. They should be here soon."
Rain nodded, offering the nurse a faint, grateful smile, and mouthed, "Thank you."
Rain stood silently by his bedside, her heart racing as a wave of anxiety washed over her.
Her hands were clenched tightly in front of her, the tremor in her fingers betraying the storm of emotions brewing inside her.
"Alexander..." she finally managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper.
His gaze shifted toward her, and her breath hitched as she met his eyes. He looked at her, but there was no recognition there. She bit her lower lip, fighting the tears threatening to spill. Before she could gather her thoughts or say anything more, Dr. Lambert spoke up, cutting through the tension in the room.
"Do you remember her, Alexander? She’s Rain... She’s your wife," Dr. Lambert said, his voice calm but filled with a sense of urgency.
Alexander’s gaze flickered between the doctor and Rain, confusion still clouding his expression. He blinked a few times as if trying to piece together the fragments of his memory. "Rain..." he murmured softly. "My wife?"
Rain swallowed hard, the weight of his words crushing her. She tried to smile, but the effort felt painful. She stepped closer to the bed, her voice trembling as she spoke.
"Yes, Alexander... I’m Rain. Your wife."
