Chapter 327: Begging

At the Prosecution Office...

"Let’s wrap things up early. I need to buy something for Prosecutor Lancaster," Jane reminded everyone, glancing at the clock with urgency.

Henry shook his head subtly, his gaze drifting toward Rain’s vacant office. It had only been a week since she had woken up from the incident, yet her indefinite leave had already left a noticeable void. Her absence was deeply felt by the entire team.

Matt had taken the responsibility of explaining the situation, though he shared only the bare minimum of details. The room fell quiet for a moment, everyone seemingly lost in their thoughts about Rain and what she must be enduring.

The Lancaster family had ensured that the matter stayed private, keeping it out of the media.

Henry sighed heavily, the weight of concern settling over him. Everyone in the team had been eager to visit Rain, but her family had been protective, restricting access to her.

Thankfully, today was different. Rain had finally allowed them to visit. Matt had shared that she’d been spending all her time in the hospital, in the room of her husband, Alexander, who was in a coma.

The thought made Henry’s chest tighten. He couldn’t imagine the pain she was going through, watching the man she loved in such a state. But despite the distance and the barriers, he was determined to show his support somehow. "Let’s finish this up quickly," Henry said, straightening.

The group headed straight to the hospital after clocking out. As Henry stepped into the room, he couldn’t help but notice how much Rain had changed in just a week. She looked thinner, her face pale, and dark circles framed her slightly swollen eyes. It was clear she had been carrying a heavy burden.

"Thank you for coming," Rain said with a faint smile, though exhaustion was evident in her voice. She accepted the fruit baskets and some more delicacies Jane handed her. "You guys didn’t have to bring all this."

"You’re getting thinner," Henry remarked, his frown deepening. He reached into his bag and handed her a small paper bag filled with chocolates and sweets. "Here. These might help."

"What’s this, Prosecutor Wayne? You brought her more presents?" Jane asked, her eyes widening in mock disbelief.

"So what? You’re the one who insisted we chip in as a group, but I thought Rain might appreciate these chocolates," Marlon interjected. "Let Prosecutor Wayne give her what he wants."

"Ah, seriously!" Matt scolded. "You two are always bickering. Stop arguing in here. Prosecutor Lancaster doesn’t need to hear your usual office banter."

Rain couldn’t help but chuckle softly. For the first time in days, she felt a bit lighter. The familiar teasing and camaraderie reminded her of better times.

"You make it sound like I’m the bad guy here," Jane mumbled, crossing her arms and shooting a glare at Marlon. "At least I know what to bring!"

Henry, who ignored the two, took the opportunity to turn to Rain and comment, "It’s good to see you smile, Rain."

She nodded, her expression softening. "Thank you, all of you. I haven’t been able to laugh like this in a while."

Jane, still smiling, suggested, "We miss you at the office, Prosecutor Lancaster. Maybe you could stop by every now and then? You know, just to break the monotony here."

Rain hummed thoughtfully. "I’ll think about it. Let’s see how I can manage everything."

Henry leaned forward, his tone gentle but firm. "Don’t rush yourself, Rain. Take all the time you need. Family comes first, always. The office can wait."

"Thank you, Henry. I appreciate that," Rain replied. She gestured toward the chairs. "Please, take a seat. I’ll make us some coffee."

The group chatted for a while, sharing light-hearted stories and jokes to lift Rain’s spirits.

Eventually, they said their goodbyes, leaving her with a warm sense of gratitude.

As the door clicked shut, silence once again enveloped the room, leaving Rain alone with her thoughts, and Alexander.

She had a faint smile as she approached Alexander and started massaging his arms and shoulders.

"Guess what?" Rain said softly. "We’re going home tomorrow. The doctors think it’ll be better for both of us to stay at the mansion. They said it might even help your recovery," she added with a small, hopeful smile.

As days passed, and with the family’s agreement, Rain decided it was best to transfer Alexander to the Lancaster Mansion. The doctors supported the decision, assuring her that private medical staff could monitor him effectively at home.

Her voice lightened as she continued, "We can even go out to the estate, and I’ll wheel you around in that fancy inclined wheelchair. Doesn’t that sound nice?"

Once she finished the massage, Rain pulled up a chair beside him and held his hand, pressing his warm palm against her cheek. "I miss your voice, Alexander," she whispered, her gaze fixed on his still face.

Her voice trembled, and tears began to gather in her eyes. She tried to fight them back, to stay strong, but the weight of her emotions proved too much. Quickly, she stood and rushed to the bathroom, closing the door behind her.

Inside, she turned on the faucet, letting the sound of running water mask her sobs. Her tears fell freely as she clutched the sink, her body shaking with quiet anguish.

"It hurts so much," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "Please, God, let me hear his voice again. Please, let my husband wake up. Give him another chance. I’m begging you."

Rain sank to her knees, clutching her chest as if trying to hold her breaking heart together. Every day was a battle to keep going, to stay hopeful, even as the sight of Alexander’s unmoving body threatened to pull her into despair.

After a few minutes, she wiped her tears and took a deep breath, forcing herself to compose herself. She had to be strong, not just for herself but for Alexander.

Returning to his bedside, she whispered with a smile, "I’ll be waiting for you, Alexander. No matter how long it takes, I’ll be here."

Then, Rain grabbed his hand and kissed his knuckles, seeking comfort in the familiar warmth. But she froze mid-motion, her heart leaping in shock.

"Alexander," she breathed, her eyes wide. She had felt it, his fingers had moved, a light squeeze against hers.
