Chapter 39: Meeting Manager Mina

Jake and Mia exchanged a smile before sitting back down.

Afterward, the two enjoyed their meal and then strolled sweetly around the park, a popular spot for couples.

Jake held Mia’s delicate, boneless hand as they walked along the riverside path in the park.

Around them, many couples or married pairs were doing the same. Every so often, wooden benches were occupied by young couples who seemed to be newly in love, their shy and awkward demeanor reminding Jake and Mia of their own beautiful college days.

The bright moon in the distance was round like a silver plate, its light spilling onto the river’s surface, faintly reflecting the willow trees swaying along the shore.

"The moon is so round tonight," Mia remarked wistfully.

"Hmm?" Sensing his girlfriend’s unusual mood, Jake added, "Thanksgiving is coming soon."

"Yeah."

Mia was likely thinking about last year’s Thanksgiving. Although Jake had officially visited her parents just a few months ago, Mia had actually mentioned him the previous year.

That Thanksgiving, Mia had reportedly gotten into a huge fight with her mother, leaving her emotionally low for a long time afterward.

Jake had also felt terrible about it for a while. After all, Mia had done it for him, and this outcome was far from what he had hoped for. frёeweɓηovel_coɱ

Even before the formal visit, he had already been labeled as a troublemaker who drove a wedge between them. Though it wasn’t true, it was hard not to overthink it.

"Don’t dwell on it, Mia. Times have changed. I believe this performance is a good start toward meeting your mom’s conditions."

"I know."

Noticing Mia’s lack of enthusiasm, Jake quickly changed the subject. "You rarely wear heels. Your feet must be tired. Let me carry you."

With that, Jake released Mia’s hand and crouched down without another word.

"It’s not that bad."

"Come on, not being obedient?"

"Fine~" Faced with Jake’s overflowing affection, Mia felt even more determined to bring him home for Thanksgiving.

And so, Jake carried Mia around the entire park, drawing envious glances from other couples along the way. Finally, he drove her home.

...

During his break, Jake fully released the fatigue and stress accumulated from days of intense work.

Shigella was truly a major company. Even a small-time employee in the sales department was fiercely competitive, let alone the managers, directors, and general managers, whose pressures were unimaginable.

And Mia’s mother commanded the entire Shigella Corporation. Her methods and abilities were beyond ordinary.

Lying in bed, Jake closed his eyes to gather his thoughts. He had been so focused on work lately that he hadn’t had time to reflect quietly.

Despite gaining the ability to read inner voices, Jake was still clueless about the old man who had given him this power or the electric razor. Fortunately, so far, this ability showed no adverse effects on his body.

Jake had seen plenty of movies—superpowers in domestic and foreign films came in all forms. But gaining an ability from an electric razor shock was a first.

As he pondered, Jake gradually fell into a deep sleep.

This time, he didn’t have any strange dreams and slept soundly.

The two-day break passed quickly. After their date, Jake and Mia didn’t go out again. He slept at home for a full day, barely easing the exhaustion in his body.

With the selection process recently concluded, the sales department temporarily returned to its usual workflow.

In the days leading up to his business trip, Jake prepared diligently. During his break, he had already received all the client materials via email.

Back at the company, Cabel was as noisy as ever, bragging to the two other girls in their group.

He claimed that since winning the championship, even his family looked at him differently. His tall, majestic image had now established his status at home.

When asked what rank he held in the family now, Cabel sheepishly replied, "Mom is above Dad, Dad is above me, and I’m above the dog."

Lily hadn’t forgotten their prior agreement and wanted to invite Jake out for a meal. As Cabel’s good younger brother, Jake decisively passed this opportunity to Cabel instead.

However, Lily felt too embarrassed, so they agreed to wait until Jake returned from his business trip to have a proper meal together. Meanwhile, Lena remained silent, standing out starkly from the trio in the group.

Jake didn’t pay much attention either—he encountered too many girls every day, especially after gaining the ability to sense emotions.

During the morning rush hour, the negative emotions from countless girls poured into Jake relentlessly. Being a working professional was truly not easy.

....

September 15th, Savannah Louis Airport.

It was early autumn, and the weather was gradually turning cooler. The trees lining the roads were shifting from green to yellow, with some even beginning to wither. According to Cabel, there were no strict dress code requirements for the business trip, but one shouldn’t look too shabby either.

Since he was accompanying his goddess on this trip, representing the company’s image, it was best to bring one or two spare suits. Thus, Jake showed up at the airport in casual attire, dragging his suitcase behind him.

He had originally expected to meet Manager Mina at the airport, but she had sent a last-minute notification saying she would go ahead first.

Left with no choice, Jake had to board the plane alone to Sahara. While waiting in the departure lounge, Jake opened his phone to see a barrage of reminders from Cabel.

"Jake, since you’re going on this trip with my goddess, please keep the following in mind: First, don’t think about enjoying yourself—you’re there to observe, learn, and also serve as an assistant. Second, don’t make any decisions on your own; follow the goddess’s arrangements at all times... Lastly, keep a good eye on my goddess for me. I’m worried other men might have designs on her."

"This guy, never changes. Still, I appreciate it." Jake was genuinely grateful to Cabel.

Despite his outwardly glib, money-grubbing, and lustful demeanor, he was actually quite principled in private—just in need of a girlfriend to keep him in line.

After a three-hour flight, Jake finally arrived at his destination and made his way to a hotel according to the itinerary.

"Sahara Grand Hotel," located in the heart of the city, was a five-star establishment. Its standards and amenities were almost on par with Savannah’s Dawn Grand Hotel, boasting grand architecture and extravagant decor.

Jake first went to his reserved room to unpack before heading to meet Manager Mina as scheduled. According to protocol, Jake was supposed to meet Manager Mina’s assistant first, who would then escort him to the designated location.

However, Manager Mina clearly had her own plans and simply sent a brief WhatsApp message instructing Jake to report directly to her room.

As Cabel had mentioned, this business trip came with five-star treatment, but there was still a gap between regular employees and managers.

Their rooms weren’t on the same floor. Jake was staying in a standard single room on the middle level, which was still far superior to most other hotels. Manager Mina, on the other hand, was staying in a deluxe single room on the hotel’s sub-penthouse floor.

Jake stood outside her door and knocked lightly.

"Knock, knock, knock..."

The door was opened by a young woman dressed in professional office attire. Jake recognized her—she was Manager Mina’s assistant, whom he had seen at the company before.

"Manager Mina, Jake is here."

"Mm, you can go back and rest early."

"Understood, Manager Mina. Your clothes and toiletries have been arranged. Let me know if you need anything." With that, the assistant left.

Jake was led into the living room—yes, you heard right.

This deluxe suite was so massive it was practically the size of an apartment, complete with a living room, dining area, and leisure space.

Jake hadn’t interacted much with Manager Mina before. Her ability to become a manager at Shigella at such a young age spoke volumes about her unfathomable capabilities. Standing stiffly in place, he waited quietly for Manager Mina’s instructions.
