Chapter 37: He Was Gone

Rivana woke up with a gasp. She was pulled out of the dream right before she could get clear answers. She touched her cheek, still feeling the warmth and the small, gentle hands of Alan caressing her. It didn’t seem like a dream and also not entirely a reality, but something in between—connected to her rebirth. The sensation lingered, making her wonder if there was something more to these dreams.

Her eyes then fell on Azrael, sleeping peacefully like a baby. Moving closer, she held onto his hand and pressed it against her cheek. How could this man possibly be dangerous? She just couldn’t bring herself to accept it. Even if he hadn’t taken a bullet today, she wouldn’t have been able to suspect him, considering everything he had done for her.

Slowly, she dozed off again, her mind a muddle of questions and emotions. The dark room enveloped her once more, casting a somber atmosphere around her. She held onto Azrael’s hand tightly, as if it were the only anchor keeping her grounded.

---

The next morning, Azrael slowly woke up. His eyelids fluttered open, and he blinked a few times, trying to adjust to the light. He felt a numbness in his shoulder, likely due to the anesthesia. As he sat up, he squinted, making out the details of his surroundings. His eyes fell on someone beside him, holding his hand and sleeping over.

Feeling him move, Rivana woke up from her sleep. She blinked a few times and looked up at him, her eyes widening to see him awake. Tears formed in the corners of her eyes, but a smile tugged at her lips. Standing up, she moved closer and asked him, "Are you feeling better?"

Instead of the warm reply or the soft gaze she was used to, Azrael looked at her and questioned, "Who brought me here?"

Rivana was confused by his behavior, gulping as his stare seemed cold and distant. Was it the medication? Why was he suddenly behaving like this, right after waking up?

"The bullet was..." Rivana began, but Azrael didn’t let her finish. He reached out to strip off the IV attached to his other hand.

"Are you crazy?" Rivana frowned and scolded him. Moving closer, she tried to stop him, grumbling, "You are still sick! You can’t take it off."

Much to her horror, Azrael pushed her away, and she stumbled back at his force. Luckily, the nurse who had come to check on him saw the scene and rushed out to inform the doctor.

The bodyguards also noticed and quickly called Dawn. Fortunately, Ezekiel and Callum had stayed in the hospital, anticipating such a reaction from Azrael. They quickly briefed the doctor about the situation and hurried inside.

Azrael always went crazy after waking up; his hatred for hospitals was quite clear, and no one could handle him. They worriedly looked at Rivana, who seemed shaken by his reaction, and sighed.

Ezekiel and Callum rushed inside, much to Rivana’s relief. They saw Azrael arguing with the doctors and their men, quarreling to let him go and sighed.

"Prepare for his discharge," Ezekiel ordered, his voice echoing through the room.

"But sir, he still needs—" the doctor tried to argue, and Rivana was with him. Though Azrael’s outburst had scared her, she couldn’t help but worry about his treatment.

Ezekiel sighed and replied, "Our doctor will treat him at the house. He will get in touch with you soon." He then turned to Dawn, who nodded and rushed outside. Turning to Rivana in the corner, staring blankly at Azrael, he sighed again and gestured for Callum to take her away.

Callum walked over to her and escorted her out. "Let’s go home. He will be there soon."

Rivana took one final glance at Azrael before walking out. What had suddenly gotten into him? Did the bullet hit his head and they missed to check? she wondered, following behind Callum.

---

They all went to the house, and Mike, the family doctor, rushed in with his team to set up everything for Azrael’s recovery in the guest room.

The entire day was spent checking and running a few tests on him, while Rivana didn’t dare to see Azrael again. She kept glancing at his room, watching doctors and nurses go in and out, hoping he wasn’t throwing tantrums again. Her emotions were a mix of anxiety, confusion, and fear. She wondered if he would burst out again.

These thoughts ran through her mind, bugging her throughout the day. Luckily, as the sun slowly started setting, Ezekiel finally met her in the hall.

"He is fine now," Ezekiel said to her, sitting on the couch across from her. "The doctors gave him some medicines, and he is resting. You can see him in the morning."

Rivana nodded with a smile. She sighed in relief, glad to know that at least he was fine and not making a scene like earlier.

"Let’s have dinner. Callum is out on some business, and I am hungry," Ezekiel suggested. Rivana smiled before following him to the dining hall. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

They had dinner silently, both lost in their own thoughts. Once dinner was over, they wished each other good night and walked to their respective rooms.

Lying on the bed, Rivana couldn’t stop thinking about Azrael. Was he angry because of her? Was he disappointed in her and thought she was stupid? Or did he hate her, thinking she was weak and couldn’t even protect herself?

Above all these thoughts, she still wanted to wish him well and got up from the bed to visit him. Reaching his room, she hesitated for a while before knocking on the door.

After a few knocks, when there was no response, she sighed, thinking he was asleep, and turned around to leave. But then she realized something and turned back, her eyes fixing on the doorknob. The door was slightly ajar.

Taking a deep breath, she pushed it open and entered the room.

Her eyes wandered around the dark room before falling on the bed. Luckily, the nightlamp was on, and she moved closer. As she stepped closer, her eyes widened in shock to see the bed empty.

She looked around, rushed to open the bathroom door, and even checked the balcony, but he was nowhere to be found. Her heart raced, and her mind spun with panic and confusion.

Was he in danger? Worse? Was he even alive?
