Starting Today, I'll Work as a City Lord-Chapter 199: Stay Away From Him
Chapter 199: Stay Away From Him
Liu Feng walked out of Hundred Herbs Hall and glanced at the line of patients still waiting outside. He couldn’t help but shake his head and sigh. “Whatever you have, you can’t have illnesses, otherwise…”
Then he hailed a taxi. “To Bu Jiang High Speed Railway Station.”
“Okay! 80 dollars!”
“Sure.”
As the car sped off, Liu Feng stared out the window at the rapidly retreating buildings. He was leaving this city, heading to a small county town nearby- he had an appointment today to discuss buying a house.
Before long, he arrived at Bu Jiang High Speed Railway Station. He scanned his ticket, boarded the train, and departed on schedule.
Seated on the train, Liu Feng’s thoughts began to drift. In the other world, he was a noble with his own territory and city, served by the gentle and understanding Nicole, surrounded by a lively bunch of beastkin girls…
But here on Earth, he was just an ordinary man with a bit of money. What was his life goal? Make money and slowly waste away? Become a mortgage slave? Get caught up in backstabbing business schemes? Or fight crowds while traveling?
Modern urban life came with too many chains. Liu Feng had only been away from the other world for two or three hours, and he already missed it.
“Hey, handsome, why are you spacing out?”
A woman’s voice next to him pulled Liu Feng back to reality. He turned his head and saw a young woman who was about 20 or so years old. As for her looks… if she wiped off a few layers of makeup, maybe he could give her a proper rating.
Liu Feng gave a polite nod and a faint smile, but didn’t speak. He had gotten used to being approached whenever he went out to buy things- he was numb to it by now.
“I’m Jia Jia. When I got on the train just now, I saw you zoning out, so I said hi,” the girl said softly.
The train had made one stop earlier, and Jia Jia had gotten on at that station. When she saw a good-looking guy with great air sitting next to her, she couldn’t resist trying to strike up a conversation.
“Hello,” Liu Feng nodded again with a polite smile.
Jiajia could tell that he wasn’t interested in chatting, so she gave an awkward smile and didn’t push further.
She smiled bitterly to herself- handsome guys she liked didn’t care about her, while the ones she didn’t like wouldn’t stop pestering her.
“Jia Jia, I heard your hometown has lots of bamboo you can dig up? I love bamboo shoots!” said one of her coworkers nearby.
“Yeah! My grandpa’s birthday banquet this time has tons of dishes made with bamboo shoots. You’ll be able to eat as much as you want,” Jia Jia replied, turning away to chat with her colleague.
40 minutes later, they arrived at their destination. Liu Feng got off the train, hailed a taxi to the county center, and met the house owner to complete the purchase paperwork. He spent a little over 800,000 dollars on a small courtyard house.
Then he headed to a dealership and bought a small car for around 200,000 dollars. Without wasting time, he drove straight to the outskirts of the county- his newly purchased courtyard was located in a small mountain village.
After about a 30-minute drive, even before entering the village, he saw a vast bamboo forest. The village was half-hidden within it, giving off a kind of hidden paradise vibe.
If this village were near a big city instead of a small county town, it probably would’ve been snatched up by real estate developers long ago.
Once he entered the village and arrived at the courtyard, he saw that the courtyard wall was made of stone. After opening the gate and driving inside, Liu Feng realized that this courtyard was really huge, like a Siheyuan from the north. No wonder the owner had insisted on the 800,000 dollars.
He unpacked his newly bought items, chose a room with a cellar as his bedroom.
Why was there a cellar in the room? The former owner had a serious drinking problem and had naively copied scenes from TV, digging a wine cellar right inside his bedroom. If he hadn’t drunk himself into stomach cancer and urgently needed money for treatment, he wouldn’t have sold the house.
Liu Feng planned to remodel the cellar- it would become his secret place for crossing worlds.
By the time he finished everything, about five hours had passed. He decided to go out and explore the surroundings, mainly to get a sense of who his neighbors were.
Not far from his courtyard, Liu Feng spotted a familiar face- Jia Jia, the girl who had chatted with him on the train. She was talking with three middle-aged women and looked equally surprised to see him.
“Hey! Handsome, we meet again! You live in this village too?” Jia Jia waved cheerfully.
“Yeah, I just moved in today,” Liu Feng replied, surprised at the coincidence.
“Jia Jia, is this handsome young man one of your suitors?” one of the women teased.
“Auntie! Don’t say weird things!” Jia Jia said, embarrassed.
“Young man, what do you do for work? Are you in a state-owned company like Jia Jia?” another woman asked.
“Me?” Liu Feng was momentarily taken aback. Why does this feel like a matchmaking interview? But he had already prepared an excuse for his job. Calmly, he replied, “I write web novels.”
“Oh? Just like Ah Xiang then? He’s always holed up at home claiming he can make money writing novels, staying up all night, barely making 3000 dollars a month,” another woman said with a disdainful look.
“I see. Well, keep at it, young man!” one of them said, then pulled Jia Jia aside. “Come on, your grandpa’s birthday banquet is about to start.”
“Okay!”
Jiajia quickly lost interest in Liu Feng. She knew what people who wrote web novels were like, because her brother wrote web novels. It was a profession for shut-ins, and they couldn’t make much money from it.
Liu Feng watched them leave and smiled wryly. He could hear their disdainful comments:
“Jia Jia, stay away from him. Writing novels has no future, always cooped up at home…”
“Exactly. No social circle at all. Just like Ah Xiang. I heard his mom finally kicked him out to get a real job.”
“Then there’s still hope for him. Otherwise, staring at a screen all day is enough to drive anyone dumb and crazy.”
Liu Feng realized he could go back. There was no need to probe any further- if he was right, they were his neighbors.
And since he might stay in the house for a whole day or even several days without going out, these neighbors would assume he was inside writing web novels, solving the risk of finding out about his ability.
Thinking about the wild ginseng in his interdimensional space and the millions in his bank account, Liu Feng’s lips curled into a satisfied smile.
Write web novels? How naive! Over his dead body. He was a nobleman with beastkin girls, after all.
He pulled out his phone and placed some orders on Taobao. Now that he had his own courtyard, it was time to start stockpiling supplies.
Then he made a few phone calls. He had been eyeing that Iron Man suit for a long time- now he could finally afford it.
After finishing everything, Liu Feng returned to the courtyard, locked the gate, and headed down into the cellar. He was ready to travel back to the other world- just in time for dinner.
