Chapter 148: Old Madam Lancaster!

Seraphina’s POV

The tall doors were wide open, and the warm gold light from inside spilled over the people who were entering the party banquet.

Asher was the first to walk in, his hand tangled with Emma’s. She looked calm while he looked like he owned the place.

My chest tightened at the bustling scene in front of me. There were a lot of people inside and my stomach curled in just at the sight if them.

I stayed in the car, fingers gripping the edge of my dress. The window glass felt safer since it parted me from them. My eyes kept scanning the crowd and I could see a lot of familiar faces present there.

The thought of stepping out made and meet them made me sick. I almost wanted to turn back and to my house, lock the door, and shut the curtains until no one could see me.

But Asher was here. And Adrian might be present there as well. And I’d already come this far. If I bolted now, it wouldn’t just be embarrassing and I would let down my Brother Alistair who was sitting beside me, and looking at me.

I swallowed hard and as the car’s door wide opened for me to step out. The rush of noise entered my ears all at once as my heels clicked against the pavement, that too sounded loud in my ears.

By the time I stepped out of the car, my palms were already damp and my breath shallow. My face felt stiff, not because I was trying to look a certain way, but because my muscles refused to move which made me appear cold and detached.

I didn’t realise it then, but that unintentional mask would later give me the title of a cold beauty in the high society without me doing anything.

"Let’s go, love." Brother Alistair’s voice was warm, almost lazy, as his hand covered mine. His touch grounded me for a second, but the moment we moved toward the entrance, the weight of every stare pressed against my skin.

All heads turned toward us... not because of me, but because of the man walking beside me. Alistair wasn’t just my brother; everyone in the country knew his face and his name.

After all, he was the biggest superstar of our country.

"You’re sweaty," he murmured near my ear, his tone teasing but kind, making me flinch and yank out of my thoughts.

"Are you that nervous?" he asked, and I turned my head just enough to meet his eyes before nodding. "I’m sorry, but... It’s my first time attending a party with you like this."

It wasn’t a complete lie. In my previous life, there had been a few occasions where I’d been by his side in public. But those moments had never been as grand as this.

Back then, I’d been an invisible person; even when I stood in the same room as him, no one would ever notice me.

As we stepped inside, I could hear people talking about us, which made my skin prickle. My grip on Alistair’s hand tightened before I could stop myself.

"Who is she?" a woman’s voice drifted from somewhere near the champagne table.

"The one with Alistair? That’s not his sister for sure," another replied with a look of disgust on her face.

"She looks... elegant and cold," the first said with a faint laugh. "But beautiful. Definitely high-society material. But who the hell is she?"

I didn’t turn my head, but my ears burned. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

I could hear those words loud and clear, but it was completely different from my past life.

Back then those whispers about me had been coated in pity or laced with poison.

And in this life, they were praising me... even if there was still that faint hint of disgust in their tone. But things had really changed just as Emma had said!

"Love."

Alistair’s grip tightened on my hand, his thumb rubbing over my skin in a steady motion. His voice dropped lower. "Let’s go meet Grandma first and then... then I’ll let the whole world shut their mouths."

I blinked at his words and was startled. "What?" My eyes widened a little. My face didn’t move, but my eyes that I couldn’t control were already betraying the surprise that visible in them. "Why would you do that?"

"Why not?" he said, rolling his eyes like I asked such a obvious question. "They need to know I don’t have a sister named Melissa... only Seraphina. And I love her more than anything in the world."

The words made me feel warmed. For a moment, I didn’t know what to do with them. In my previous life, they had never been able to announce our relationship in such a grand manner.

It was the same party that I attended in my past life, where I was bullied and humiliated to the point that I wanted to die, and no one had ever stood up for me

As we walked deeper into the hall, the eyes still followed us. I could feel the shift in the air. A few people looked away quickly when Alistair’s gaze swept over them; others looked at me with eyes full of curiosity... or something else!

By the time we reached the far end where Grandma was seated, my chest felt tight.

The moment my eyes landed on her, a rush of memories appeared in my head, someone were vivid while some were hazy.

In my past life, I remembered this night clearly... or at least just a few days after the party, Grandma had fallen. The image of her lying there, pale and still, was vivid.

And after that, she wasn’t able to live long. She died before the fall of the Lancaster family.

If she’d been alive... no, I was certain that in her presence none of it would have happened. She had been the protector, the shield that held everything together.

And her death was the start of the ruin of Lancaster family.
