Sons of a devil-Chapter 80: ashes and aftermath
Chapter 80 - ashes and aftermath
The ruins of Aethermoor lay still, cloaked in the silence that only follows great chaos. A strange calm settled over the forest, as though the world itself was holding its breath—unsure if peace had truly come, or if this was merely a pause before the next storm.
Cain sat beside Selene, his arm protectively around her shoulders. Her body still shimmered faintly, residue of the power she had unleashed pulsing under her skin. Her breathing was shallow, but steady. She hadn't said much since the confrontation with the Hollow King—her mind seemed to be somewhere far away, as if trying to process what her body had become.
Leo was tending to their mother, who remained unconscious but stable. He sat beside her, muttering soft incantations and running his fingers across the deep burn marks that traced her chest and arms. Eren, ever the quiet one, stood at the edge of the clearing, staring into the dark trees as though expecting someone—or something—to emerge.
"Do you think it's over?" Selene finally whispered.
Cain's grip on her tightened. "No. But we survived him once. We'll do it again."
She turned to look at him, eyes filled with exhaustion and fear, but also something else—love. "I didn't know I had that kind of power... I didn't want it."
"I know," Cain murmured, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "But you used it to protect us. That's all that matters."
Behind them, Leo stirred. "Mom's pulse is growing stronger. Whatever that last surge of Selene's light did... it healed part of her."
"She saved us all," Eren said quietly, finally turning to face them. "And maybe woke up something even older."
Cain looked up sharply. "What do you mean?"
Eren's gaze drifted to the cracked stones beneath their feet. "Aethermoor is ancient. It predates our bloodline. The power Selene used... it awakened the heart of this place. I felt it. And I think others will feel it too."
Selene shivered. "So we've drawn attention."
Eren nodded. "Not just our father. The Old Clans. The Sealed Ones. Maybe even the Archons."
Cain growled low in his throat. "Let them come."
"No," Selene said softly. "We're not ready. Not yet."
A brief silence followed, heavy and thoughtful.

Leo stretched his arms and flopped to the ground with a tired grunt. "Great. Just what we needed. A bigger war. Can't we have one week to just eat and be stupid?"
Cain cracked a rare smile. "You? Be more stupid? That's dangerous."
"Oh, please. I'm the smart one. You're just tall and broody."
"Smart?" Eren raised an eyebrow. "You put your pants on backwards yesterday."
"That was a stylistic choice," Leo defended.
Selene laughed—a genuine sound, soft but bright. The boys turned to look at her, each one moved by the resilience in her eyes.
"We've been through hell," she said, quieter now. "But we're still here. And as long as we're together..."
Cain finished for her, "...we'll keep surviving."
Just then, a spark flared in the air, flickering like a flame suspended in time. It hovered for a moment before darting into the trees. The group stood up, on alert, their powers rising instinctively to the surface.
"What was that?" Leo whispered.
Eren squinted. "A messenger spell. That's old magic."
Cain stepped forward. "From who?"
Before anyone could answer, a deep, unfamiliar voice echoed through the trees.
"Sons of the Underworld. Daughter of Light. Your war has just begun."
A silence fell again, but it was no longer peaceful.
Cain pulled Selene close.
This time, they wouldn't be caught off guard.
This time, they would be ready.
