Chapter 342: Chapter 342: Someone Blocks the Road

After discussing, they brought the meatball-making machine along and continued forward.

In the evening, they settled in a cave.

This was a naturally formed cave which contained a stream. The stream had small fish, and the water was clear with aquatic plants growing along the edges.

Because of previously mutated fish, everyone was hesitant to catch and eat the fish from the stream or touch the water. They had brought their own water, which was sufficient and conserved, so there was no need to take risks.

Gu Pan crouched by the stream, observing the flow and the small fish, "These don’t seem to be mutated," because at least outwardly, there were no differences.

Lu Ruisheng also came over, scooping up a fish with a small box, "It seems like they really aren’t mutated."

Everyone gathered around to look, and indeed, there was nothing unusual. The mutated fish had much smaller gills and even eyelids, which looked eerie.

Gu Pan told Chen Lang, "Get a larger bottle, and take a few back for the base research institute to study."

If not mutated, these could be bred for consumption at the base.

Chen Lang complied, running out to the vehicle to get a large bottle, filled it with water, and scooped up several fish.

After packing everything up, they continued exploring the cave. The insects on the ground were also quite normal, showing no additional limbs or any abnormalities.

Cheng Yang also took a plastic container, wore gloves, plucked some grass, and captured some insects to place inside the plastic box.

Previously, they had not thought to collect these specimens to take back. This was something even the base hadn’t considered.

Mutated animals had just started to appear, but it wasn’t as mystical as the movies made it out to be. It was just the beginning, and no one knew what the future held.

And, speaking of which, these observations were only based on appearances; whether there truly were no mutations or they were just unexpressed or slow to develop was uncertain.

They didn’t dare to sleep in the cave at night, worried about being bitten by possibly mutated snakes or bugs, so to be cautious, they ended up sleeping in the vehicle.

The next day, they continued their journey and arrived at Steel City, which was built around a mining area, so to visit the factories, they had to enter the city.

To enter the city, they prepared thoroughly. Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng rode a motorcycle to scout and determine the route before the others would enter.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng, wearing bulletproof vests and helmets, rode into the city.

The two of them didn’t bring much in terms of supplies, so even if they were spotted, they wouldn’t attract much attention—the worst they could lose was a motorcycle, which wasn’t of much use anyway.

After entering the downtown area and walking a bit, they finally saw traces of people.

Following past disasters, even with good weather today, they wouldn’t just carelessly walk down the streets. They either walked under eaves or carried metal containers.

Two men in patched clothing saw the motorcycle and quickly moved to the side of the road.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng didn’t stop or slow down; they kept moving.

Up ahead, there was a mall where, in a spot hit by sunlight, more than ten people sat, all with basins on their heads, likely basking in the sun since it had been a long time since they had last seen sunlight. Their hair was dry and yellow, their faces pale and frightening as if they were vampires from the movies.

Sunbathing was indeed good for the body, as without sunlight, humans couldn’t survive.

It wasn’t advisable to ride a motorcycle through this group. The city had various factions, and some people would ride motorcycles, but they generally wouldn’t attack civilians, so there wasn’t much concern.

The city was not unified; it had factions in every direction, north, south, east, and west, as well as individual survivors.

Among these was also the Steel City family compound, a faction of its own, which caused the city’s population to be quite scattered. This allowed more people to survive as resources weren’t concentrated in the hands of one faction.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng reached a secluded area and found two scruffy individuals, likely without any connections. They gave them a bag of compressed biscuits and asked about the entire city’s situation.

After listening, they understood that the city was not very dangerous to enter since it was divided among many factions and no one would attack rashly to avoid being weakened and overtaken by others.

After clarifying everything, they also visited the steel factory. There weren’t many people inside; goods that couldn’t be eaten or worn were of no use to them.

But for Gu Pan, these were very useful. She collected a lot of finished steel, which would play a critical role in future reconstruction.

At that moment, she felt her ’Space’ was too small. After storing the steel, there was even less free space left. She still had to find oil and various other minerals. It might be better to exchange the gold from Entertainment City first before going out.

But people aren’t prophets, so it’s impossible to consider everything comprehensively. Humans aren’t gods; with so much happening daily, it’s indeed impossible to cover all bases. For now, they would collect whatever useful items they saw, return when full, and then expand their ’Space’. Later, they would check the weather and perhaps plan to fly further away.

Also, since this trip was made with companions, any future resources would have to be partly transported back by truck, which would save some ’Space’.

Trading these proven goods for some special passes was indeed their primary purpose for coming out.

After collecting what they wanted, the two rode the motorcycle back to where their friends were waiting.

Seeing them return, everyone breathed a sigh of relief, worried they might have encountered danger.

Lu Ruisheng took out some paper, drew a rough map of the city, and marked where the various factions were based, all of which had been ascertained through paid information.

After planning, they drove into the city again. This time, not only were they targeting the factory area, but also the surrounding facilities. They planned to take away as much as possible that could be useful for the future.

In the mining area, they loaded good steel onto their vehicles, opting not to mark it for later retrieval, as doing so would necessitate a return to the urban area, which was too dangerous.

They planned on taking the steel out and storing it in a cave, to be transported later, thus saving some gasoline.

Later, on the outskirts of the mining area, they found an interesting place, a hand-operated millstone mill. These were indeed very useful since, without electricity in the future, some food would need to be manually processed, so they took the millstones with them.

As they proceeded, they were stopped by several flamboyantly dressed women. From their attire and the cloths in their hands, everyone, being adults, understood what that implied.

Gu Pan’s group was in the lead vehicle, so she leaned out and shouted, "We don’t need it, please make way."
