Chapter 159: Chapter 159: Zoey’s Origin

On the way to the law firm, Wren Sutton received a call from home.

"Nina, how’s Adrian? Has his fever gone down?"

"He just got a shot to bring the fever down," Wren Sutton replied.

Mrs. Sutton asked worriedly, "The doctor didn’t say anything else, did he?"

"No," Wren Sutton said calmly. "Mom, don’t worry. He’s fine."

Mrs. Sutton breathed a sigh of relief. "That’s good. Why don’t you two come home for lunch? I’ll make some extra dishes."

Wren Sutton looked out the car window. "Mom, something came up, so I won’t be back for lunch. You and Dad go ahead and eat. Don’t wait for me."

After a pause, she added, "I’ll be back a little later."

"Okay," Mrs. Sutton said.

The call ended.

Wren Sutton hung up. Twenty minutes later, she arrived at the law firm.

After giving her name and the reason for her visit, a receptionist led her directly to Aaron Pierce’s office, knocking before entering.

"Mr. Pierce, Miss Sutton is here."

Aaron Pierce looked up, gesturing for Wren Sutton to come in.

He put down the documents he was holding and rose to pour her a glass of water.

Wren Sutton accepted the glass. "Thank you."

Aaron Pierce sat across from her, and they got straight to the point, discussing the court hearing in three days.

Wren Sutton took out the court summons.

"Mr. Pierce, can I win this lawsuit?"

...

After the shot, Adrian Lancaster’s fever broke quickly. He felt much better, but his expression was grim—a cold, unapproachable look that warned everyone to keep their distance.

Kevin Dawson drove to the hospital to pick up Adrian Lancaster.

"President Lancaster, Mrs. Lancaster instructed me to take you home."

"To the office." Adrian Lancaster’s tone was sharp, leaving no room for argument.

Kevin Dawson knew President Lancaster’s temper, but he still braced himself to persuade him. "President Lancaster, your fever just broke. It would be better to go home and rest. That way, if Mrs. Lancaster asks, I’ll have an answer for her."

Adrian Lancaster’s face darkened, his eyes as cold as ice.

"Kevin Dawson, you certainly listen to Wren Sutton."

Kevin Dawson felt a chill run down his spine. He shivered and didn’t dare say another word as he drove toward the company.

On the way, Adrian Lancaster’s phone rang. It was the caregiver.

"Mr. Lancaster, sorry to bother you. Little Zoey is crying for Mrs. Lancaster, and we can’t console her. The doctor needs to give her a shot, but she won’t cooperate. I really don’t know what to do."

Adrian Lancaster frowned, a headache forming. He could clearly hear Zoey’s cries through the phone, and an image of the face that so closely resembled Lucia’s appeared in his mind. In the end, his heart softened.

"Don’t let the doctor give Zoey the shot yet. Wait until I get there."

...

Zoey was crying and making a fuss. The caregiver and nurses couldn’t calm her down, and the doctor was at his wit’s end.

Adrian Lancaster pushed the door open and walked in. When Zoey saw him, she suddenly stopped crying, tears clinging to her face like tiny, translucent pearls.

"All of you, get out."

At his command, everyone in the room filed out.

Adrian Lancaster walked to the bedside, sat down, and watched Zoey with a profound gaze.

"Why are you throwing a tantrum?"

Zoey wasn’t afraid of him. "Bad uncle, where did you take my mommy? Give me back my mommy!"

Adrian Lancaster didn’t stoop to arguing with a child.

"Get your shot first. After you get it, I’ll tell you."

Zoey shook her head. "I’ll only get the shot when Mommy comes back."

Adrian Lancaster threatened her, "If you don’t get the shot, she won’t come back."

Zoey burst into tears with a WAH, her eyes turning red.

"Bad uncle, you’re the one who lost my mommy! You have to give her back to me!"

Adrian Lancaster’s head throbbed.

"Can’t you be a little more well-behaved? Lucia was much more obedient than you when she was a child."

Zoey only cried harder.

Adrian Lancaster was at a loss.

Just then, the door to the hospital room was pushed open, and Theodore Lancaster and Claire Sterling walked in.

Adrian Lancaster turned, deep confusion flashing in his dark eyes.

’What are my mom and dad doing here?’

Before Adrian Lancaster could ask, Theodore Lancaster walked eagerly to the bedside, as if needing to confirm something.

He saw Zoey’s features clearly. Just as his wife had said, she looked exactly like Lucia as a child—as if cast from the very same mold.

Theodore Lancaster’s pupils trembled. He clenched his fists, trying desperately to conceal his heavy breathing.

He knew in his heart who this little girl was.
