Chapter 151: Chapter 151: Mrs. Sutton’s Student

What a small world.

Wren Sutton hadn’t expected Spencer Sawyer’s competitor to be Adrian Lancaster.

Adrian Lancaster’s words from that morning—"I’ll show you what I’m capable of. Watch how I crush my competition"—still rang in her ears.

Wren Sutton knew the strength of The Rhodes Group, so Adrian Lancaster’s victory was entirely within her expectations.

"Spencer, don’t be discouraged. There will be other opportunities."

Spencer Sawyer gave a bitter smile. A part of him was still disappointed and sad.

"Don’t you think I’m a failure? My very first project in Aston just went down in flames."

Wren Sutton comforted him, "One failure doesn’t mean you’ll always fail. As the saying goes, failure is the mother of success. You just have to get back up where you fell. Spencer, I believe in you. Please believe in yourself, too."

Spencer Sawyer felt a surge of encouragement. A warmth spread through his chest, and a gratified, touched smile appeared on his face.

"Wren Sutton, thank you for your encouragement. It’s chased away my gloomy mood."

Wren Sutton smiled back. "You’ve got this, Spencer."

"Yeah, I will."

After that brief interlude.

Wren Sutton checked the time. "Spencer, I have to get going. Let’s talk again when we have time."

"Okay." Spencer Sawyer was tactful. "Drive safe, and call me anytime if you need anything."

He watched Wren Sutton walk out of the lobby.

For some reason, Wren Sutton’s car wouldn’t start. She tried a few times, but nothing happened.

Just as she was about to go out and hail a cab, Spencer Sawyer suddenly appeared.

"I saw you hadn’t left after all this time. Is your car having trouble?"

Wren Sutton nodded. "Yes, it won’t start. The engine won’t turn over."

Spencer Sawyer walked over. "You seem to be in a hurry. How about I give you a ride? I’m free right now anyway."

Wren Sutton waved her hand. "Spencer, I don’t want to trouble you. It’s easy enough to get a taxi. I’ll just go grab one."

"It’s no trouble at all. You just gave me that whole pep talk and made me feel better. I have to show my appreciation somehow. And as luck would have it, here’s my chance. Just let me be your driver this once."

"Spencer, you’re being too formal."

"Come on, let me give you a ride. Otherwise, I’ll feel bad about it."

Spencer Sawyer sounded so sincere that Wren Sutton found it hard to refuse his kind offer. After a moment’s hesitation, she finally agreed.

Soon, Spencer Sawyer drove his car over and stopped in front of Wren Sutton.

She opened the back door, sat in the seat behind the driver, and fastened her seatbelt.

The car slowly pulled out of Amberwood Estates. As Wren Sutton had directed, they headed to the supermarket first.

Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the supermarket.

Spencer Sawyer was in charge of pushing the shopping cart while Wren Sutton selected the ingredients for hot pot. They quickly filled the cart.

The two walked side by side, talking and laughing. From a distance, they looked like a loving couple.

While waiting in line to check out, Spencer Sawyer took a call. His expression soured, and he quickly ended the conversation after a few words.

"Spencer, if you have something to attend to, you don’t have to trouble yourself with taking me home. I can just get a cab," Wren Sutton said, not wanting to impose on him.

Spencer Sawyer calmly put away his phone and offered a small smile.

"That was just an insurance salesman. Don’t worry about it. I said I’d take you home, so there’s no way I’m leaving halfway through."

Since he put it that way, Wren Sutton didn’t press the issue. After paying, the two of them left the supermarket and headed to the parking lot.

Spencer Sawyer opened the trunk. "These bags are heavy. I’ll put them in. This isn’t a job for a woman. You can get in the car first."

Wren Sutton insisted on waiting for him. "Thank you for the trouble, Spencer."

...

The supermarket wasn’t far from the Sutton residence, and it was only a ten-minute drive before they arrived downstairs.

Spencer Sawyer opened the trunk.

"That’s a lot of stuff. You definitely can’t carry it all by yourself. I’ll help you bring it upstairs."

Wren Sutton didn’t refuse his kind offer and said thank you.

The two went upstairs together.

Mr. and Mrs. Sutton had been waiting for a long time. When they heard the doorbell ring, they knew their daughter was back and happily went to open the door.

"Dad, Mom, I’m back."

Wren Sutton came in, her face all smiles.

Spencer Sawyer followed close behind, carrying two large, full bags.

"Hello, sir. Hello, ma’am."

Mr. and Mrs. Sutton froze for a moment.

When they first opened the door and saw a man standing behind Wren Sutton, the couple had assumed it was their son-in-law, Adrian Lancaster.

But a closer look revealed it wasn’t him.

’Then who is this man?’

"Is it okay to put the things here?" Spencer Sawyer asked politely.

Mr. Sutton snapped out of it. "Yes, yes, that’s fine. Thank you, young man."

"You’re welcome, sir. I’m Wren Sutton’s university classmate. My name is Spencer Sawyer," Spencer introduced himself formally.

As he finished speaking, Mrs. Sutton studied him carefully. Making sure she wasn’t mistaken, her expression turned to one of surprise and delight.

"Spencer Sawyer!"

Spencer Sawyer looked up at Mrs. Sutton. He hadn’t gotten a clear look at her when he first came in, but he saw her clearly now.

A flicker of recognition lit up his eyes, and he blurted out, excited and happy, "Professor Morrison! I haven’t seen you in so many years. You’re still so young and full of energy."

"You rascal, still such a smooth-talker."

"Professor Morrison, I’m just telling the truth."

Listening to their conversation, Wren Sutton was in disbelief. "Mom, Spencer, you two know each other?"

A kind, amiable smile appeared on Mrs. Sutton’s face. "He was my student."

"That’s right, I was one of Professor Morrison’s students," Spencer Sawyer said proudly.

He was overjoyed. He never imagined that Professor Morrison was actually his junior, Wren Sutton’s, mother.

’With this connection, I can visit the Suttons more often in the future.’

Wren Sutton was completely bewildered, unable to sort out the connection.

"But Spencer didn’t go to Arden University, so how could he have been your student?"

Mrs. Sutton smiled and patiently explained, "When you were in high school, I was transferred to teach at King’s University. The year you were accepted to King’s, I was transferred back to Arden University."

It dawned on Wren Sutton. "Oh, I get it. So that means you taught Spencer for two years."

Spencer Sawyer added, "That’s right. I took Professor Morrison’s elective course in college. I still remember what her classes were like. It was a huge lecture hall, and you couldn’t find a single empty seat. Some students who couldn’t get a seat would stand at the back of the room to listen, and sometimes even the aisles were full of people. That’s how popular Professor Morrison’s classes were."

Wren Sutton sounded a bit envious. "I’ve never even attended one of Professor Morrison’s lectures."

Mrs. Sutton coaxed her daughter in a doting tone, "That’s simple. If you want to hear a lecture, I’ll start a home classroom tomorrow. You just have to come back on time for class."

Spencer Sawyer raised his hand. "Professor Morrison, I want to sign up too."

Knowing he was just joking to liven up the atmosphere, everyone burst out laughing.

Mr. and Mrs. Sutton invited Spencer Sawyer to stay for dinner, which was what Wren Sutton wanted as well.

It was too kind an invitation to refuse, so he agreed.

The four of them gathered around the steaming hot pot, eating and chatting like a family.

Throughout the meal, no one mentioned Adrian Lancaster.

Spencer Sawyer was also tactful enough not to bring up the Sutton family’s son-in-law, lest he ruin the atmosphere.

After dinner, Wren Sutton walked Spencer Sawyer downstairs.

Before he left, Mrs. Sutton gave him a souvenir she had brought back from a trip.

"Goodbye, Professor Morrison. I’ll come visit you often when I have time."

"Okay, you’re welcome anytime."

「Downstairs.」

Spencer Sawyer and Wren Sutton exchanged a few more words before waving goodbye.

Wren Sutton watched his car drive away until it was completely out of sight before she turned to go back upstairs.

Just then, a car horn blared from behind her.

She turned to look, and the familiar Rolls-Royce slowly pulled up in front of her. The window rolled down, revealing Adrian Lancaster’s cold, stern face.

"Who was that man?"
