Chapter 131: Chapter 131: Physiological Revulsion

Adrian Lancaster hesitated for a few seconds before finally answering the call.

Mrs. Lancaster had only forbidden him from siding with the Marshall family; she hadn’t said he couldn’t answer Maya Marshall’s calls.

Wren Sutton had no interest in listening to whoever was calling Adrian Lancaster. She walked ahead of him, looking for the stairwell, not planning to take the elevator.

Adrian Lancaster followed close behind, accompanying Wren down the stairs.

The hospital stairwell was exceptionally quiet, with the two of them walking one after the other.

Maya Marshall’s voice drifted from Adrian Lancaster’s phone, and Wren Sutton could hear it crystal clear.

It was always the same few lines; she could have recited them by heart.

Maya Marshall’s cloying, artificial voice made Wren Sutton feel physically ill.

She couldn’t take it anymore. She pulled out her phone, opened a music app, and played a random song at a considerable volume.

Adrian Lancaster: "..."

Hearing the sudden music, a suspicious Maya Marshall frowned.

"Adrian, are you playing that music?"

Adrian Lancaster disdained to lie. "No."

"Then who is it?" Maya Marshall’s suspicion grew, and she blurted out instinctively, "Is it Wren Sutton?"

Adrian Lancaster’s expression didn’t change, and he made no attempt to hide it. "Yes."

Maya Marshall’s eyes went red with jealousy. She hadn’t expected Wren Sutton to be with Adrian Lancaster.

’And that bitch Wren Sutton actually has the gall to listen to music? She’s clearly gloating, provoking me.’

Maya Marshall couldn’t swallow this insult, and she was even more unwilling to lose to Wren Sutton just like that.

’This is exactly the time I need to snatch Adrian away and take Wren down a peg.’

Maya Marshall quickly came up with a plan.

After a moment of silence, a dull THUD was heard, followed by her cry of pain. It sounded like she had fallen from the hospital bed, and her phone had been thrown a great distance.

"My leg..."

Adrian Lancaster heard Maya Marshall’s pained sobs and asked worriedly, "What’s wrong?"

Lying on the hospital bed, Maya Marshall put on a dramatic, heartfelt performance.

"My leg is pinned... I can’t move... It hurts so much! Ahhh, it’s bleeding..."

There was static on the line, so Adrian Lancaster couldn’t hear clearly, but he was certain something had happened to Maya Marshall.

"Don’t move, call a doctor right away! I’m on my way."

Adrian Lancaster hung up, turned, and prepared to leave the stairwell to take the elevator. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

Just then, Wren Sutton’s cold, questioning voice came from behind him. "Where are you going?"

Adrian Lancaster stopped in his tracks and turned his head slightly to explain.

"Maya Marshall might have fallen off her bed and hurt her leg. She just had an amputation; the situation doesn’t look good."

He started to leave as soon as he finished, assuming Wren Sutton had agreed.

"Adrian Lancaster, stop right there! Have you forgotten what Grandmother warned you about? Mrs. Lancaster told you not to visit Maya Marshall in the hospital," Wren Sutton reminded him.

Adrian Lancaster was dismissive. "If you don’t say anything, Grandmother won’t know."

Wren Sutton replied, "But I won’t cover for you."

Adrian Lancaster turned back to look at Wren Sutton, his gaze deep and sharp, his expression stern.

"What are you getting so worked up about? Don’t you know Maya Marshall lost a leg?"

Wren Sutton’s heart ached. "She lost a leg. What about me? Do you have any idea what I’ve lost?"

Adrian Lancaster misunderstood her meaning.

"You haven’t lost anything. You’re still the esteemed Mrs. Lancaster."

Wren Sutton let out a cold laugh, all hope she had for Adrian Lancaster completely extinguished.

"’The esteemed Mrs. Lancaster.’ How wonderful. Should I be thanking you for that?"

Hearing her sarcastic words, Adrian Lancaster’s face darkened.

"Save your thanks for later."

Adrian Lancaster was dead set on leaving, and Wren Sutton no longer tried to stop him.

The two parted on bad terms.

One took the elevator, the other took the stairs.

Wren Sutton didn’t go tattling to Mrs. Lancaster; she drove away from the hospital by herself.

On the way, Isla Griffith called, her voice anxious and on the verge of tears.

"Zoey suddenly fainted! I just brought her to the emergency room."

The color drained from Wren Sutton’s face. "Which hospital? I’m on my way."
