Chapter 594: Bad boy

Qie Ranzhe, "..."

Wen Qinxi laughed seeing his reaction but he didn’t get to revel in it for long because Luo Muchen handed Qie Ranzhe his gift.

Qie Ranzhe wasn’t so enthusiastic about this. He expected the most perfunctory gift. He had everything he wanted and he was never lacking so what could this surnamed Luo gift him that he didn’t have already? This was to say he was the most difficult in-law to please.

It was the not-so-famous but rare ethereal enigma chess set. A priceless chess set exclusively designed for the legendary Grandmaster Aurelius. It was carved from a single moonstone and, the board simmered with lunar luminescence. Its edges bore delicate runes invoking cosmic wisdom. This chess set actually belonged to Luo Muchen and he brought it along when he went back home after deciding to gift it to his father-in-law. He thought since they had the same interests Qie Ranzhe would like it. In fact, Qie Ranzhe liked it, alright. In actually fact he loved it so much.

The thing was, he had already sent his secretary to get this chessboard at an auction all the way across the globe. Because it wasn’t that famous that people would vie for it he didn’t think anything of it. Who would have thought his secretary would call to let him know that the price overtook what he wanted to pay for it?

That’s because someone else wanted it just as bad and that was Luo Muchen. Luo Muchen bought it for himself at the auction and had no idea that the fierce competition he faced that day to get it was actually his future father-in-law.

Qie Ranzhe’s fingers traced the intricate carvings on the king piece. Across the room, Luo Muchen stood rigid his eyes fixed on him. The room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in as Qie Ranzhe’s aura enveloped them both.

It was the threatening presence of a beast after its territory had been encroached upon. It seemed that the universe was actively expanding the rift between them because how much of a coincidence was this?

The king piece felt cool and weighty in Qie Ranzhe’s grasp. He rubbed it with a sly quirk at the corner of his lips. He was thinking of how to get back at Luo Muchen. This time he won’t hold back. He would directly defeat him in a game of chess as punishment.

Luo Muchen’s throat tightened. Maybe it was his illusion but he felt like his future father-in-law had transformed into an ancient warlord, a chess master who played not with pawns but with lives.

Wen Qinxi nudged Qie Ranzhe before asking, "Didn’t you want this same chess set before?" Luo Muchen’s face turned ashen. Now he understood why Qie Ranzhe’s face looked that ugly. Talk about directly stepping on a landmine.

"I—" Luo Muchen began about to explain that he had no idea but Qie Ranzhe raised a hand, silencing him. If he knew it was Qie Ranzhe he was going up against he would yield for the sake of a harmonious family in the future.

He honestly thought Qie Ranzhe would hold a grudge for this but Qie Ranzhe released the king piece placing it back in the box. "Thank you for this gift," he said, surprising Luo Muchen. "It is a great gift."

The room exhaled, and the festive atmosphere returned. Luo Muchen had brought more gifts with him but they weren’t as outstanding as the main gifts. He wanted all of them to like him and the gifts were quite effective. What he didn’t realise was that even if he came with a house plant and a box of chocolates they would have still loved him.

In fact, they would pay him to come and claim Qie Xieling as he was truly getting his grandmothers worried about him. This family had expensive hobbies but they were very reasonable people.

Qie Xieling was messing with his father’s katana sword when the butler came towards Madam Qie and whispered something. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

"Lin Lin," called out his grandmother and he sheathed the sword as he raised his head.

"Go outside. It is here," she said and Qie Xieling smiled like a Cheshire cat before jumping over a few boxes on the carpet.

"Don’t run. It ain’t going nowhere," yelled Grandma Wen but he heard nothing. Luo Muchen followed him with his eyes feeling like he had been abandoned.

While passing by Wen Danzhe couldn’t help but pat his shoulder while comforting him. "Cars before hoes kid, cars before ho—" he said only for a slipper to come flying towards him. How the angle was even possible was a mystery to him. The mistake he did though was dodge.

He should have opened his arms and taken that slipper straight to the face but he dodged.

"Oh shit," he cursed before taking off running. Rule number two, never run because that would only intensify the punishment.

"Who are you calling a hoe you brat," yelled his mother while running after her son.

Thus in the background of Qie Xieling admiring the giant gift box thrice his height, there was a short aunty running after her adult son around the estate. Qie Xieling was completely unaware that his uncle was about to join the ancestors while staring at the ginormous black gift box.

It rested on the gravel, its surface as dark as midnight with a huge green ribbon coiled like a serpent along one side. He rushed into his Nana’s arms and the old woman almost fell because of him.

Luo Muchen was watching with a look of fascination on his face. If this was what it took to make Qie Xieling happy then he would buy an entire fleet just to see him jump around in excitement. When he got his sportscar his intention was to impress Qie Xieling and he even wanted to gift it to him but who would have thought Qie Xieling would refuse him because his parents would kill him? He dressed like a bad boy but he was especially obedient. He covered his lips with his fingers hiding his smile.
