Chapter 50 -50: Greatly Disappointed!

Sean Knight curiously asked:

“Where did you learn Chinese?”

“I learned it in my hometown.” Freya answered with pride, “Chinese people came to build a grand bridge in my hometown. I went to help cook for them, and that’s how I picked up some Chinese.”

Freya spoke Chinese very standardly, it had to be said.

“Why didn’t you continue working there?” Sean asked curiously.

“Because of the war.” Freya’s voice was filled with sadness, “The Chinese left, the bridge was only half built, and then it was bombed… we lost our homes.”

Alright, that’s indeed a sad story.

After Sean and Freya finished their conversation, Jason Caldwell chimed in with a smile:

“Freya is the most beautiful and intelligent girl in our village. Unfortunately, war broke out, and later we came here…”

Sean did not ask how Jason and the others came to this place.

He was not a great philanthropist and did not have that level of energy. It’s better not to ask if he knew he couldn’t help.

“By the way, Freya’s cooking is excellent; you must give it a try!” Jason enthusiastically recommended Freya’s skills to Sean.

Looking at the cook inside, Sean felt a sense of familiarity. Was this not how Chinese food was made?

Considering that Freya had once helped cook at a Chinese corporation, Sean understood.

Freya went to cook while Jason, Eiris, and Malawi Perez chose items they could use from the auctioned goods.

They didn’t need any help from Sean.

Before long, the meal was ready. Sean glanced at it and almost laughed out loud.

There was a pot of rice and a bowl of mushy vegetables – identifiable bits included potatoes, chili peppers, and some unknown type of meat.

Freya scooped a full bowl of rice for Sean, topped it off with a spoonful of “mush vegetables,” and handed it to him.

Curious, Sean tried a spoonful and found it quite tasty!

Jason, Eiris, and Malawi laughed and ate happily.

Freya just watched Sean, who raised his wooden spoon and commented:

“It’s delicious and very authentic!”

Freya smiled happily.

Maybe it was because he was hungry or because it was truly delicious, but Sean ate two bowls before getting up to stretch for a while. Seeing that it was almost time, he asked Jason:

“I’m going to the freight yard, are you coming?”

“Yes, let’s go!” Jason dropped his bowl, exchanged a few words with the older Eiris in their native language, and followed Sean out.

Sean waved goodbye to Freya, Eiris, and Malawi before leaving the place.

The freight yard they were going to this time was only 500 meters away from where Jason lived, so they arrived quickly.

According to the information they had received beforehand, there would be seven containers up for auction, which was quite a decent amount.

Sean arrived early; there were only three people at the site. The containers were already lined up, but the auctioneer hadn’t arrived yet, so the yard owner and his assistant were discussing something.

Sean was happy to take advantage of the relatively empty venue to have a good look at the containers.

From a suitable distance, he saw that the first container contained porcelain.

It seems to be the old-fashioned export porcelain from China at the end of the last century and the beginning of the new century.

Sean wasn’t interested.

In the second container, there were two cardboard boxes, one with small tires and the other, which wasn’t covered, with bits of paper covering some parts.

Inside, there were tricycles, the more delicate kind with a front cyclist and a two-seater in the back for passengers. All were human-powered.

All brand new goods!

This was definitely worth a gamble!

The third container had furniture, but it was quite shabby.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth containers contained household and travel items. They weren’t as shoddy as the second container, but most of the contents weren’t particularly valuable.

However, in the seventh container, there were several boxes containing professional machinery. Sean could only tell that the logo on the boxes said something related to mining.

Sean withdrew his gaze, feeling a little fatigued.

Sure enough, Sky Eye 2.0 was much more powerful!

As he looked at these containers, more and more treasure hunters arrived one after another.

To Sean’s surprise, big shots like Mr. Madden, Diana Smith, and others he didn’t recognize had all come over.

Seeing Sean, they were somewhat surprised, but they all came over to greet him one by one.

Sean was a rising newcomer, but newcomers needed to build relationships, especially since they were so capable.

Who knew when they might collaborate?

Seeing that almost everyone had arrived, the auctioneer arrived, and the freight yard owner asked him to begin.

The assistant cut open the lock on the first container, and the door was opened. Many people showed a disappointed expression as they saw the contents.

However, big shots like Mr. Madden and Diana Smith were fully absorbed in their observations.

The auctioneer made way for those intending to bid so they could take a look.

Sean also went over to pretend to inspect the contents for a while, and then withdrew.

Helen Brown approached and whispered:

“What do you think? Are you planning to bid?”

Sean hesitated for a moment and said:

“It depends on the price, if it’s right…”

“Shall we cooperate?” Helen whispered. “I’m afraid I can’t compete with Madden and Diana if they both want to bid.”

“No.” Sean shook his head resolutely. Helen was unreliable, and he wasn’t really interested in this container, so he refused.

A few minutes later, the auctioneer started:

“The reserve price for this container is 500 dollars. Each increase must be no less than 50 dollars. The auction starts now…”

A tall and fat black man immediately raised his hand: “600 dollars!”

Diana raised her hand: “700 dollars!”

Helen was not to be outdone:

“800 dollars!”

Soon, the price soared to 1,700 dollars.

Sean felt something was off. These items were just export porcelain from only two or three decades ago, why were they so expensive?

However, thinking back to the news in the 1980s and 1990s, enamel spittoons from that time could sell for tens of dollars, so he supposed it was reasonable for these porcelains to be more expensive too.

He laughed and raised his hand: “One thousand eight hundred dollars!”

Seeing Sean raise his hand, some people who had never seen him before became even more excited:

“2,000 dollars!” After raising his hand, he even defiantly lifted his chin toward Sean.

Sean couldn’t help but laugh.

What was this all about?

Did these people treat him as their imaginary enemy?

The price rose to 3,100 dollars. Sean saw many bidders and shouted out another price:

“3,300 dollars!”

The room immediately went silent after he finished!

Except for the auctioneer’s continuous shouts, no one else raised the price.

Sean broke out in a cold sweat; was it going to fall into his hands?!

He just wanted to confuse the others, but he didn’t really expect to win the bid!

Fortunately, after a silence of more than ten seconds, someone immediately started bidding:

“3,500 dollars!”

Sean breathed a sigh of relief and shrugged his shoulders, indicating that he would not raise the price.

Finally, the porcelain items inside sold for 6,500 dollars, purchased by Mr. Madden.

This really went beyond Sean’s expectations.

Next up was the second container that Sean was interested in.

As soon as the container was opened, many people’s eyes widened.

These almost fully covered containers were the most thrilling to gamble on!
