Revive Rome: Wait! Why not make the empress fall in love with me first?-Chapter 319 - 117 War Approaches
Chapter 319: Chapter 117 War Approaches
About two weeks later, the vanguard of the Wolf Family finally reached the outskirts of Innsbruck City.
"Indeed, they’ve dug trenches," Viscount Heinrich said, looking at the distant positions.
Ever since escaping from the Black Death incident, he had traveled south via the Verona Free State, then encountered the invading army of the Wolf Family at the border of the Lombardy Territory.
Subsequently, he was naturally captured and brought back.
As the only survivor of the embassy group, the army believed he possessed valuable information about Bavaria, and for this reason, they forcibly conscripted him to join the military.
Heinrich had no choice, as the military officer leading the troops was none other than Demigod Lord Alberto of the Wolf Family, nicknamed "Hidden Strings".
It was said that Lord Hidden Strings’ level was around Lv.20-25, which was considered relatively weak among demigods. However, even the weakest demigod was still a demigod – one slap from him could easily obliterate Innsbruck City, no question.
Of course, given that the current Magic Tide Level Limit was only Lv.10, such a city-destroying slap would likely cause the demigod himself to lose control of his Spirituality and perish. Thus, the presence of Lord Hidden Strings was more about stabilizing morale, and he would likely not engage directly in combat.
Nonetheless, this did not prevent Heinrich from currying favor with him.
"The one currently defending Innsbruck City should be Earl Sigmund of Tirol," Heinrich diligently reported, "He is an old-school noble, upright and stubborn, not easily submissive. However, he has military experience from his younger years, so he is not a novice in warfare. Please take extra care, Lord Hidden Strings."
"Hmm," Alberto said, stroking his goatee, "with so many trenches dug, the opponent clearly wants to turn Innsbruck City into a nail, securing it on our northern march route."
"Yes," Heinrich ingratiated, "Your insight is profound, my Lord. Moving north from here is the Ahnaus Mountain Area, and we must pass through the valleys at the foot of the Alps to reach Mingxing City. The supply lines into the mountains will inevitably be stretched thin."
"If we cannot resolve Innsbruck and choose to bypass them to continue heading north, then they can cut off our rear supply lines at any time. Therefore, this nail must be removed."
"It won’t be easy to pull," Alberto scoffed coldly, "The opponent is obviously well-prepared. Why didn’t that Lord of Filth destroy Innsbruck previously?"
Heinrich internally slandered, as they hadn’t informed him about the Lord of Filth before his mission, and now they were asking him about it – how would he know?
He bowed deeply and respectfully said, "That Lord of Filth once spread a vast amount of rats and disease in the city. As for why he couldn’t destroy the city, I do not know."
"Typical of someone from the Pure Blood Monastery, arrogant as usual. I thought he was one of the rare sensible Lords of Filth when I heard him speak logically before, but it seems he is just an arrogant madman," Alberto pondered. "Regardless, it is a fact that Innsbruck City has suffered severe damage; otherwise, it wouldn’t have adopted such a passive defensive stance."
"Order the vanguard to advance and occupy the trenches in front of the city!"
"Yes!" The deputy commander beside him received the order.
The Wolf Family army immediately set out, led by the physically powerful White Wolf Knights, named for their predominantly white Bullet-Proof Ceramic Clothing – left hand with Bullet-Proof Shield, right hand with Broadsword, surging forward as a formidable group.
Inside the trenches, Innsbruck’s riflemen began to shoot, crisscrossing fire streaking across the airspace above, slicing over the torsos, limbs, and heads of the White Wolf Knights.
Except for those unfortunate enough to be shot in the heart or other vital areas, most of the White Wolf Knights continued their charge without any hindrance; when physical power reached a certain level, ordinary bullets had limited lethality.
Reaching the edge of the trench, the White Wolf Knights jumped down and engaged in close combat with the riflemen inside — it quickly turned into a one-sided slaughter. As the bullets failed to penetrate their defenses, the Longsw...
The gunfire on the battlefield quickly weakened; what followed was an onslaught by the grey-clad militiamen from Lombardy and Burgundy, dressed in uniforms of grey linen. They were no match in Physical Power compared to the White Wolf Knights. However, their sheer numbers, rushing forward like a relentless wave, were enough to render anyone who witnessed the scene utterly despondent.
"Order the fortress squad to fire," commanded the Earl of Innsbruck from the watchtower atop the city walls.
"Understood," Alfred turned his head to relay the order, then advised, "My lord, you should come down. The city walls are an easy target for enemy fire." fгeewёbnoѵel_cσm
"At least they haven’t brought out the cannons yet," the Earl coldly stated. "Soon, they’ll pay the price for that."
From several bunkers above the trenches, ghastly steel firearms were suddenly set up. A fierce barrage of bullets rained into the crowd of Grey Wolf gunmen. Like wheat under a scythe, the militiamen fell, stirring up a bloody storm.
"Let the White Wolf Knights take out those bunkers," ordered Alberto.
"My lord, I’ve checked," Heinrich cautiously spoke. "The bunkers’ locations are cunningly designed. If we tried to reach the rear entrances, we’d inevitably be exposed to machine-gun fire. Unless I’m mistaken, those are ’Black Swan W’ general-purpose machine guns from the Bavarian Weapons Bureau, theoretically capable of firing 1200 rounds per minute. Even the White Wolf Knights can’t withstand such intense gunfire."
"Send snipers for cover," Alberto responded coldly.
Amid the intermittent sound of machine gunfire, a distinctive snap of a sniper rifle suddenly echoed. Every report was accompanied by a sudden silence from a machine gun barrage, giving the White Wolf Knights an opportunity to charge at the bunkers.
However, within seconds, the rapid chatter of the machine guns resumed. The White Wolf Knight leading the charge was instantly hit by hundreds of bullets. The sheer force of the bullets threw him back several meters, his chest and abdomen grotesquely mangled.
"They must have built tunnels below the bunkers," Heinrich remarked. "They can send people to replace the gunners picked off by our snipers at any time."
"Hmm," Alberto grunted, neither agreeing nor disagreeing, then suddenly looked up sharply. A slender sniper bullet hovered thirty centimeters in front of his head, spinning at an almost invisible speed in mid-air but not moving forward an inch.
"Can’t kill him," Miel said, setting down her rifle from afar.
"Expected," Aske told Thira, who was peering through the binoculars beside him. "See, this guy’s Main Sequence is Storm, his Law is probably also enhanced abilities related to air pressure, even a sniper bullet can’t penetrate."
"So how are we supposed to kill him?" Eleanor inquired.
"We’ll see when there’s a chance," Aske glanced at the ongoing struggle ahead, suddenly feeling an odd sense of nostalgia.
Rifle charges, machine-gun sweeps, trenches, bunkers, barbed wire—the military technology of the Divine Luo Empire still lingered around the level of World War I in real historical terms. Although there were no planes, they had Power Armors, snipers, and gunners, which was quite exhilarating for ordinary players.
However, for professional players, the difficulty was somewhat disappointing, nowhere near as tough and dangerous as the Divine Luo’s later campaigns against the Church Court: autonomous robots, magnetic suction gun mounts, anti-personnel mines abounded. Snipers wore electronic optical camouflage, artillery had been retired from active duty, replaced by guided missiles, armed helicopters, and mobile fighting fortresses sweeping through areas.
Subsequent indiscriminate use of miniature nuclear bombs was downright ruthless.
But in a way, using such low-intensity warfare to let the girls gradually adapt was currently a pretty decent choice.
As Aske pondered, a command came from Alfred, requesting the assistance of The Azure Longsword group in clearing out the White Wolf Knights from the trenches.
"Well then," Aske gestured grandly, "Let’s..."
"Everyone, move out!" Sigrdrifa roared.
