Chapter 89: The Forbidden Expanse

Kael, Alice, and Astra moved swiftly through the corridors of the Sentinel, their footsteps barely making a sound against the reinforced metal floors. The tension in the air was palpable as they finally arrived at the central chamber where Lucien and the others were waiting.

"My lord, you have finally arrived," Lucien said, a visible hint of relief flickering in his sharp blue eyes. He had been pacing the chamber restlessly, his rune-embroidered robes swaying with each measured step.

Kael nodded, stepping forward. "We need to make one last stop before heading to Bryndis."

Lucien tilted his head slightly, his analytical mind already formulating possibilities. "Where to, my lord?"

"The Forbidden Expanse. Our objective here is the Eldersilver. It’s being kept in a facility not far from here," Kael explained, his gaze steady.

The room fell into silence for a brief moment. Isolde’s violet eyes narrowed in thought, while Durnek let out a low whistle. The dwarves exchanged knowing glances, recognizing the significance of the material.

Lucien, ever the pragmatic scholar, gave a solemn nod. "Understood. No further questions."

With their path set, they wasted no time boarding the Sentinel. The towering vessel hummed to life as its systems activated, lifting them effortlessly into the air. The mechanical behemoth glided through the sky, bypassing the most treacherous parts of the wasteland below.

Kael stood near one of the observation decks, staring down at the desolate landscape beneath them.

The Forbidden Expanse stretched out in all directions—a barren wasteland cloaked in an eerie miasma. Jagged remnants of ancient structures jutted out of the cracked earth like the skeletal remains of a forgotten era.

As they flew closer to their destination, Kael turned to Astra. "Astra, what other materials are kept in that facility?"

Astra, ever precise, accessed his database. His gray eyes flickered for a moment before he responded. "I have no records beyond the Eldersilver. My creator did not upload further information into my database."

Kael frowned slightly, rubbing his chin. "I see. I suppose we’ll find out once we get there."

Minutes later, the Sentinel hovered over the designated location. Below them lay a massive, weathered structure—its once-grand walls now corroded by time and the relentless corruption of the wasteland.

The entrance was obscured by thick vines and debris, as if nature itself sought to keep intruders at bay.

Alice, standing beside Kael, surveyed the ruins with calculating eyes. "Master, the miasma concentration is strongest near the facility’s entrance. We may require additional protective measures."

Kael exhaled sharply. "Understood. We’ll proceed with caution. Astra, can you analyze the structural integrity of the facility?"

Astra’s Spirit Crystal pulsed faintly as he scanned the site. "Minimal collapse risk. However, unknown entities are detected within the premises. Proceeding with caution is advised."

Kael’s lips curled into a smirk. "Wouldn’t have it any other way."

With that, the team prepared to descend into the depths of the Forbidden Expanse, knowing that what lay ahead was far more than just a simple retrieval mission.

Kael slowly landed the Sentinel atop the barren plateau, its massive hull groaning as it touched down with deliberate care.

Determined to ensure their safety, he had brought along Lucien, Isolde, and the seventeen stalwart dwarves. As the ramp lowered and each companion stepped out, an oppressive pressure seemed to weigh upon them—a silent reminder of the treacherous lands beyond.

Once the team had disembarked, Kael deftly secured the Sentinel into his Infinite Storage, the massive construct locked away until needed.

Durnek’s eyes sparkled with a mix of awe and mischief as he grumbled in his deep, gravelly accent, "Ah, by me beard, I can’t help meself but be amazed of that magic!" His voice resonated among the group, a rare moment of unabashed wonder amid the tension.

Astra stepped forward, his gaze fixed on the looming entrance to the ancient facility. "Follow me," he intoned in his measured, emotionless cadence.

With every step, the group could feel the building’s history pressing upon them, each echo a whisper of forgotten ages.

Yet as they neared the threshold, Kael’s keen mana sense tingled with forewarning. "Incoming threat," he murmured, and both Alice and Astra’s expressions sharpened in response.

The oppressive air crackled with arcane energy as if summoning something predatory.

No sooner had they set foot outside than a shuddering roar split the silence. Hovering above, an Eclipse Leviathan—a colossal serpent with wings that shimmered like the midnight sky—circulated menacingly.

Its massive form blotted out the light, and its roar shook the very ground beneath them. The beast’s glistening eyes locked onto the group, and its enormous jaws began to salivate at the prospect of an easy meal.

Reacting instantly, Kael cast a radiant barrier around his companions.

"Astra, protect the dwarves!" he commanded with urgency.

"Understood," Astra replied curtly, already positioning himself as a silent guardian before the group.

Kael then turned his attention to Alice. "Alice, let’s take care of this monster first."

"Acknowledged... Activating Golem Mode," Alice responded. With a burst of crimson and gold light, her form transformed.

Steam hissed around her as shimmering Astral Nanites reconstructed her battle suit—disintegrating her clothes in the process.

Kael couldn’t help but think, ’I need to create a material that wouldn’t get disintegrated every time she transforms. I can’t have her seen naked every time she does it.’ The idea, inspired by Astra’s perfectly preserved suit, sparked his mind even as the battle loomed.

The monstrous Eclipse Leviathan bellowed its defiance, its maw dripping with anticipation as it sensed the surging mana—from Kael, Alice, and Astra—radiating like beacons.

Seizing the moment, Kael invoked his augmentation spell, ’Ascendant Veil’. Silver and crimson threads of energy cascaded around him, increasing his speed, strength, and agility while his Arcane Gauntlet of Aetherium hummed in resonance to reduce the spell’s mana drain.

With a swift motion, he summoned his twin daggers, ’Shadowfangs’, from his Infinite Storage; their dark blades shivered as they stacked their latent power with his spell.

"Alice, let’s coordinate our attack," Kael shouted, his eyes alight with focused determination.

"Understood," came Alice’s calm reply before she blinked into action, her form vanishing in a swirl of magical light.

In a flurry of precise movements, Kael blinked forward first, his twin daggers slicing through the air like a tornado.

He struck with lethal precision, his blade bypassing the leviathan’s impenetrable scales and cutting through its flesh as if it were butter.

The beast screeched in pain, an otherworldly cry that reverberated off the crumbling ruins. In rapid succession, Alice appeared beside him and delivered a swirling kick to the creature’s head.

Although the massive serpent absorbed the blow, it was enough to make the beast stagger. It lashed out with enormous claws, but both Kael and Alice were already several steps ahead, their movements a blur of calculated aggression.

From a safe distance, the dwarves cheered in their robust, hearty voices.

"By the anvils of our forefathers, look at ’em go!" bellowed one, his eyes wide with admiration.

"Aye, they’re as swift as a mountain stream!" another added, his accent thick and proud.

"Bah, no mortal foe can best the likes of Lord Kael and that iron maiden!" declared Durnek, his booming voice echoing his earlier wonder.

Back in the heart of battle, Kael’s experience with monstrous adversaries shone through. He blinked repeatedly, his strikes focused on the beast’s chest, weakening its defenses with relentless precision.

His mana sense honed in on a subtle fluctuation—a telltale sign of the creature’s mana core hidden within its abdomen. Confident that the target was now vulnerable, he barked, "Now...Alice!"

In an instant, Kael vanished, blinking away to safety as Alice awaited his command. With perfect timing, she unleashed a devastating proton cannon attack.

A brilliant beam of red and gold energy pierced through the creature’s defenses, striking its heart with unerring accuracy. The Eclipse Leviathan’s colossal form shuddered and then, with a final agonized roar, plummeted toward the barren ground below.

After ensuring the threat was neutralized, Kael approached the fallen behemoth. With a practiced glance, he confirmed its lifeless state and swiftly stored the massive creature inside his Infinite Storage—a testament to his mastery over both magic and technology.

"I’ll extract its mana core later. Now that it’s finally taken care of, let’s get that Eldersilver," Kael declared, his voice echoing with resolve as the group regrouped.

Soon enough, Kael and Alice rejoined the rest of the group, their earlier battle already becoming the stuff of legend among their comrades.

Astra, ever the silent sentinel, took the lead once more. His steady, unyielding stride guided the group toward the looming entrance of the facility where the coveted Eldersilver lay hidden.

As they reached a narrow corridor within the ancient structure, Astra halted in front of a weathered wall. Embedded within the stone was a mysterious crystal that pulsed with a faint, otherworldly glow.

Astra extended a gauntleted hand and touched the crystal. Almost instantly, it responded to his presence; its inner light intensified as it scanned his mana signature. With a sudden, resonant hum, the crystal triggered a mechanism, and the heavy, vine-entwined door shuddered open.

The dwarves, ever fascinated by ingenious craftsmanship and ancient technology, could hardly contain their amazement. Durnek, his eyes wide behind his soot-stained goggles, was the first to break the silence.

"By the mighty forges, I’ve ne’er seen such sorcery! It’s like beholdin’ the blueprints of the gods themselves!" he exclaimed, his voice booming in a thick, hearty accent.

One of the other dwarves added with equal fervor, "Aye, it be a marvel! Who’d have thought ancient magic could work in such mechanical wonder?"

"Follow me," Astra stated in his calm, emotionless tone as he stepped confidently through the now-open doorway.

Kael nodded, addressing the group with a hint of a smile. "Let’s go."

The team advanced into the inner sanctum. Astra led them along a labyrinthine passage, bypassing the trap-laden corridors that had been designed to ward off intruders. His precise control over the mechanisms ensured that no trap was triggered—every step was calculated and safe.

At length, they reached the storage facility. Before them, a cavernous chamber unfolded, its walls lined with shelves and vaults filled with glittering materials.

Eldersilver, a rare and luminous substance, was prominently displayed among them. The chamber shone like a treasure trove, each artifact and cache of arcane metals a testament to lost eras of technological wonder and magical mastery.

The dwarves’ eyes grew even wider as they took in the splendor of the room.

"Me beard, this is like hittin’ the motherlode of all our dreams!" Durnek roared with excitement, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "As an artificer, I feel like I’ve stepped into heaven itself!"

Another dwarf, practically trembling with anticipation, murmured, "I’ve seen many a relic in me time, but naught compares to this... the craftsmanship, the enchantments—it defies belief!"

Kael allowed himself a brief moment of satisfaction at their reactions. He knew that every artifact here held secrets waiting to be unraveled—secrets that could meld the ancient magic with his scientific ingenuity. His mind raced with possibilities even as he maintained focus on the mission at hand.

"Let’s get to work."
