Reincarnated as the Baron's son: My Infinite Card Upgrade System-Chapter 54: Disappoinment
In a matter of seconds, the once-damaged warehouse had been restored from the bottom up.
The roofs were nailed together, walls standing on all sides, and even every single good that had been burnt from the explosion was back.
Not just that, even the dead bodies of the soldiers Ava slayed grew out of the ground, their blood and flesh as if it was neatly carved.
As all this played out, Rashin and the rest watched with astonishment.
This was the power of Alaric?
No one could believe their eyes.
The power to manipulate time in such a way... Only powerful mages were known to possess such abilities.
"Wh...at is my son?" Rashin asked himself, barely blinking so as not to miss a single moment.
Finally, the warehouse was back to normal, with every good safely stacked inside.
[Notice, you have run out of mana.]
The system announced.
"Yeah... I can tell..."
Alaric’s eyes slowly began to close as his body began to drop to the ground.
Like a baby, he landed safe in Ava’s arms, his head somehow making it to her lap. Exhausted, Alaric had no choice but to use Ava’s lap as a pillow while he laid on the ground.
"Are you alright?" Ava spoke, raising her hand a bit to pet him, though she stopped, her thoughts getting the better of her.
She felt there was a chance Alaric wouldn’t like being petted by someone like her.
"I...m fine. J...ust tired. How... is the warehouse?" Alaric managed to speak.
Ava looked up to take a quick glance at the warehouse. "It worked. The warehouse and everything in it is back."
"Great... We should start moving... Please, lend me a hand."
"Right."
Ava carried him up, allowing Alaric to wrap his arms around her shoulder for support.
With Ava supporting him, Alaric began to walk forward, everyone watching without saying a word.
Well, until...
"Son...?" Rashin called out, his eyes filled with fear, fear of not understanding anything around him.
"Yes, father..." Alaric replied.
"You are my son... right?"
"What do you think? Is the boy before you your son?"
They both stared into each other’s eyes. One held doubts, and the other, passion, enough to drown a person’s mind.
"I know my son would never do anything to hurt his family."
"And you have your answer." Alaric moved closer. "I promised to clear all our debts, didn’t I? Watch me accomplish that."
He placed his hand on his father’s shoulder. "Keep calm, father, change is good. You can question me all you want later, but right now, if I don’t move, it could mean the death of Erica."
"R...right. P...please just be careful." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
"You have my word." Alaric smiled.
After comforting his father, Alaric and Ava boarded the wagon, where he was gently placed on the front seat to rest up.
Meanwhile, Hina was directing a bunch of soldiers to pack the goods inside the wagon so they could get moving.
Each of them carried boxes twice their size and carefully arranged them in the wagon.
Once done, Hina approached the Baron, her head slightly bowed. "All goods are set for transport. We will be leaving right away."
Rashin stared at the girl for a while before smiling. "Tell me, what is your name, young lady?"
Hina was surprised but didn’t hesitate to reply.
"Hina, my Lord."
"Hina, I know my son can be a... problem, but please... for my sake, take good care of my son." Rashin pleaded, his fatherly instinct taking over.
"I swear by the gods of the sky, I will return your son to you," Hina vowed, her expression hinting at how serious those words were to her.
"Thank you." Rashin smiled yet again.
Hina bowed and then proceeded to head toward the carriage.
They drove off.
Their destination: the Ernest County.
...
(Ernest County.)
It was finally the day Velmo was expecting the Montclair Barony to deliver his goods to him.
He knew how the roads could be sometimes, thus he patiently waited till evening, giving them more than enough time to show up.
"Where is your brother?" Velmo asked, his gaze fixed on Erica, who had been chained with two guards beside her.
She knelt inside the throne room, right in front of the Count.
"Perhaps you didn’t hear me the last time, so I’ll graciously ask you again. The sun has begun to set. Where is your brother? He should have delivered my goods, shouldn’t he?"
Velmo spoke, the growing anger already gluing itself to his voice.
There was nothing Erica could say; all she did was stare at the ground with a defeated glare.
Bang!
Velmo slammed his palm on the armrest.
When one gets angry, it’s only normal to hold some kind of frown on your face.
Yet.
He had a smile.
Almost as if he was simply enjoying the moment.
Watching the girl break into despair as the reality that her brother had failed her began to settle in.
On the other hand, Velmo felt betrayed.
He once told her, "I hate disappointments."
Taking one final look at Erica, Velmo covered his mouth to push back the mocking tear he was about to let out.
"Oh no, no, no, no, this can’t be happening..." He cried. "I actually grew fond of you. Why did you have to disappoint me? You have so much faith in your brother. What happened?"
At the state Erica was in, even a stab to her wrist wouldn’t break her out of her trance.
To her, she had completely failed her barony. She knew after Velmo was done with her, he would make his way to the Montclair Barony.
There was nothing she could do. All her hope was riding on Alaric successfully completing the mining ground.
And he did.
She was there; she saw the Count sign the papers agreeing to the trade.
Her thoughts were all over the place, unable to tell which from which anymore.
"Such a shame, this is truly sad."
At this point, Velmo had stood up and began to walk to the side of the vast room.
He approached one of the guards and pulled his sword from the sheath.
"Why did you have to fail?" He spoke, dragging the blade on the ground as he moved closer to her.
"I can’t stand failures. Come on, where was all that confidence you had three days ago? Vanished? Uhn?"
He now stood in front of her, his cold gaze digging deep into her soul.
For every penny lost, a stronger heart is gained.
Velmo knew all too well what he needed to do, and he wasn’t one to cower from it.
Slash!
He raised the sword and positioned it close to Erica’s neck.
"Our deal was to deliver your head to your family if your brother fails to deliver the goods. As a count, I never go back on my words."
Erica was scared. Despite how she tried to keep her cool, she had begun sweating, her lips curling as she tried to fight the tears about to burst out.
"Do you have any last words?"
’Alaric...’
She called out the moment she closed her eyes, fully ready to take what would come after, despite shivering in fear.
"Silence isn’t bad as well. Goodbye, Erica Montclair. Feel free to blame your brother for your death!"
Swing!
He brought the blade down immediately after raising it.
His shock was evident when he felt the blade smack against the ground and Erica was missing.
That shock soon turned into a small smirk as he stood straight.
"Last I checked, I wasn’t expecting any visitors... Alaric."
Velmo turned to his left to see an individual dressed in all black, carrying Erica in their arms.
"Sorry for the intrusion, but this girl can’t die just yet," the individual replied.
’A girl? That is not Alaric?’ Velmo questioned.
His guards already had their weapons aimed at the uninvited guest.
"Are you alright?" Aurora asked, her entire body covered in all black.
"Y...ou, my brother’s strange sexy summon," Erica blurted out.
"Yes, your brother’s sexy female. He sent me to come rescue you."
"He’s okay? Oh, thank goodness."
"Yes, he plans to bring the goods tomorrow. An incident occurred that needed his attention."
"T-omorrow?... I doubt the Count would let us leave because of that."
"That much is obvious. That’s why I’m here to protect you until my master arrives."
"You there! Did Alaric send a girl to do his dirty business for him?" Velmo inquired with his blade pointed.
"I guess you can put it like that. I don’t know. Why don’t you ask him when he arrives tomorrow?" Aurora responded.
"What? He still plans on coming?"
"Certainly. My master is not one to go back on his words," Aurora spoke.
"Hahahah! Interesting. This Alaric guy really has everyone on some kind of string, hahahah!" Velmo laughed. "If he was so dependable, why didn’t he meet up with the schedule?"
"That I do not know. As I said, if you have any questions, please wait for him to arrive."
"Oh sure, I’m not going anywhere, I’m the Count after all. But you see, since we kinda made a deal. Hand over the girl, the bitch... dies."
