Chapter 55: A morning chase.

"Hand over the girl... The bitch dies," said Velmo with his blade pointed at them.

With a sigh, Aurora gently placed Erica on the ground and stood in front of her.

"I’m sorry, but I can’t allow that. How about we sit down and have a drink or something until tomorrow?"

She spoke, her hands closing together in a plea.

"You seem to be misunderstanding something. That wasn’t a request. I’ll ask one more time. Hand over the girl."

"No."

"..."

"..."

"Bring me the girl."

"Right away, your lordship." The guards that stood at every corner of the room all began to move closer to Aurora, their weapons aimed and ready.

After reading her environment to find out she was cornered, Aurora whispered to Erica, "Princess, can you hear me?"

Erica raised her voice, the fear on her face not easily going away.

"If we run, there’s a good chance they’ll chase after us. Are you ready? Once I start, I need you to always be alert. We might have the whole county chasing after us. Are you prepared for that?"

Erica suddenly hardened her gaze, nodding her head in acceptance.

"Alright then, let us go, Princess!"

Aurora grabbed Erica by the arm and threw her up.

For a brief second, she felt her soul exit her body. It happened so fast that even if she wanted to scream, she wouldn’t be able to.

Somehow, Aurora had caught Erica and made her way outside the mansion in a split second.

The guards were shocked, every single one running out of the room and alerting more soldiers to join them in the chase.

"Interesting..."

Velmo spoke to himself, a wide grin now spreading on his face.

Amusement.

The best word to describe what he felt.

From his judgment, Aurora could have killed every single soldier in the room before they knew what hit them.

But she didn’t.

He guessed Alaric already gave her instructions not to kill any soldier under the Count to avoid facing the consequences later.

"A smart man, Alaric Montclair. You might be the best toy I’ve seen in quite a long time!"

Meanwhile, outside the mansion, a massive chase was being carried out.

Soldiers covered every nook and cranny of the county, their target: the runaway prisoner and the lady in black.

"Find them! Don’t let them get to the main town, or it will be hard to find them!" one of the commanders yelled while directing his men.

As all this was happening, Aurora had hidden herself in a small alleyway, with Erica in her arms.

"As long as we stay here... We should be fine," Aurora spoke silently. "The young master should be here tomorrow. I promise to keep you safe until then."

"I... see. C... can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"I’ve been trying to understand something, but you and the black-haired lady with a ring on her head... are my brother’s summons?"

"Yes, I may not look it, but I’m actually just a white wolf."

"A beautiful one at that, hahah," Erica laughed.

"Haha, you are also good-looking, Princess. It’s no wonder you are related to the young master."

"Thank you, hehehe... ehmmm..."

Aurora heard the little crack in Erica’s voice, which was then followed by muffled sniffs.

She wasn’t sure what it was until Erica held her even tighter, her embrace speaking every language even a deaf person would understand.

Seeing a boy cry was just like every other thing that came with life. But seeing a strong warrior cry was something most people couldn’t handle the sight of.

Erica was no different.

She was known to be strong, always keeping the family together, negotiating with other baronies, even the county, for the sake of the people she held dear to her.

Not once has anyone seen Erica double-check her choices or panic while everyone was on the verge of losing their minds. She was the calm rock in a raging storm.

Aurora knew all this because she shared some of Alaric’s memories. It was part of being a summon; you get to share part of your master’s emotions towards people he knew or bonded with.

"Lady Erica..."

"It’s... not Princess anymore~" Even as Erica spoke, she couldn’t hold down her tears.

"You should know, Lord Alaric really values you. You did well. I’m sure he would be proud."

Erica slightly broke down, shoving her face deeper into Aurora so she could cry without shouting. The relief of not dying, of thinking her brother was in danger for not showing up, everything began to wash away in that moment.

And Aurora, acting like a big sister, embraced Erica back, allowing her to freely cry in her arms.

To her, the fact Erica was her master’s big sister meant she was her responsibility too.

Towards the east side of the county, one of the commanders stood on his wagon, with soldiers surrounding his every position.

Most citizens had hidden themselves inside their houses. Not only was it strange to see so many soldiers outside at night, but for them to be looking for a loose criminal was just as wild.

No one planned on being a victim, so they all hid inside their houses, allowing the soldiers to freely do what they needed to do.

"Sir! We’ve checked the whole of the general area. There’s no sign of the escapee," one of the soldiers reported.

"They are fast runners, that’s for sure. But hiding is the one thing they can’t do, isn’t that right, Gabimaru?"

They all looked at the man sitting on the roof of a building, in his hands a bottle of wine that he was chugging down occasionally.

"Such a pain," Gabimaru spoke, his hair completely covering his face.

He was known to be a Gold-rank assassin, having the skill to track down anyone of his choosing. A skill that was most valued in the county, making him one of the most important people under Count Velmo.

"Gabimaru, we don’t have time to spare. Find these damn bastards so my men can dispose of them!" yelled the commander, standing in front of the building and looking up at the assassin.

"Where do you get off giving me orders?" Gabimaru leaped down from the roof, landing right in front of the commander.

"Did you forget what I am?"

"Believe me, Gabimaru, everyone knows you are a Fallen. You only answer to people stronger than you. We get it. But this order is coming from the Count himself. Would you disobey him?"

—Silence.

"If you are looking for the two brats, then they are over there." Gabimaru pointed towards the direction. "Now leave me alone. I do not intend on using my knives today."

"You heard him! Capture the criminals!"

"Yeahhhhhhhhhh!"

They all ran, charging towards the point Gabimaru had hunted down for them.

Aurora had heard their discussion for miles and had already begun to run on building tops.

The soldiers at the bottom had already spotted her, chasing behind her relentlessly.

Archers that had positioned themselves in strategic locations began to shoot arrows at them.

Since she couldn’t keep deflecting the arrows forever, especially with Erica in her arms, Aurora decided to drop down from the building and start taking corners.

But the moment her foot touched the ground, two soldiers leaped out of the corner, their blades already making a striking arc.

Aurora was able to dodge it using her foot, her skin too thick for them to cut through with one strike.

Once she noticed she was able to push them back, she zoomed forward.

Just to meet other soldiers now racing toward her on all sides.

But they didn’t look like the regular soldiers she had been seeing. They wore pure white and were all matching her speed.

In a matter of minutes, over ten white soldiers were chasing her, each one coming out from corners to pounce on her.

Luck finally caught up to her when Aurora found herself cornered to a wall. All around her were the soldiers in white.

"Surrender. Running away won’t help you."

"From the orders above, you are to turn yourself in for treason!"

"Treason? Now you’re going too far. Come on, a little chase around the city and you’re all worked up?" Aurora joked a bit.

"You are under arrest."

The soldiers began to move closer.

"Don’t come any closer. Killing you won’t be a problem for me, so take this as a warning. Hey, are you listening? Come on, play fair. Don’t make me do this. Tsk! I guess I have no choice!"

Suddenly!

They all noticed the sun had begun to rise.

Both the one being chased and the ones chasing were shocked to see they had been playing tag all night.

Aurora laughed.

"My master is here," she said with confidence before raising her hand in surrender.

Erica was confused but did the same thing. Her arms also went up.

Seeing this, the soldiers all began to move closer to pin them to the ground and take them back to the Count.
