Chapter 49: A sniff for revenge.

Boom!

No one expected it.

The entire warehouse got involved in flames. A sound so loud it could be heard from the Montclair mansion.

The flames didn’t just burn down the building in a fiery explosion, it also disintegrated every single material in that warehouse.

To put it simply, nothing remained after the explosion.

All that was present was Ava, whose clothes had been burnt from the flames and was almost naked, and Hina, unconscious from the force of the explosion.

Panting heavily, Ava stared at the area where the warehouse once stood, now left with scorched sand and burning woods.

Even though her hands were badly damaged from the flames, she still couldn’t help but cover her mouth in shock.

"No..."

She blurted out.

Months of work...

Alaric...

The debt would all go down the drain just from one incident?

She should have just killed him the moment she saw the man.

Her eyes spoke of many messages, each one eating her from within, but only one really made her worried.

Alaric.

She knew how hard he worked just to make sure the whole project was successful.

Kank!

Ava suddenly heard something slam against the ground.

Turning around, her eyes widened in shock. He had returned.

"Wh...at happened here?" Alaric spoke with a low tone.

He had been in the forest, checking if the land was ripe enough to be used as a farm when he heard a loud exploding sound coming from the warehouse.

Reaching there, he met a sight that instantly aggravated him.

"Lord Alaric...?... I... I’m sorry..."

Those were the only words Ava could utter; there was nothing she could say. She had failed.

He had placed her in charge of securing the place. It was her duty to make sure none of the goods got damaged, not until they arrived at Viscount Olsen’s front door.

Even Laura, who was standing behind Alaric, couldn’t help but rage, her eyebrows curling into an angry snarl.

"Ava... My master asked you a question, what happened here?" Laura chimed in, calmly pointing at the fallen knight.

The look on their faces was enough to make even the bravest of hearts crumble. Ava couldn’t help but speak.

"Some... bandits ambushed this place. They wanted to take the resources. They killed five of our soldiers before they could get here. I managed to kill a good number of them... but then... t... they suddenly blew up the place."

"Bandits?! I thought not many people knew about this place? Do we have a traitor in our midst?!" Laura’s voice raged, almost giving out the roar of a wild beast.

"... I’m sorry. I tried to get them to tell me who they were, but... I... I don’t know their identity or where they are from. But I know they are not from this barony. Lord Alaric...."

Ava looked at him, "I... I’m sorry... None of this would have happened if I had taken things seriously from the start."

Since he arrived at the scene, Alaric had not moved an inch from where he stood.

His eyes focused on the far distance.

But then finally... He decided to speak.

"Is Hina alright?" he asked.

Laura and Ava were a bit surprised; for someone who looked like he would murder the whole world just a few seconds ago, asking about another person wasn’t what they expected.

"S... she’s fine, still breathing, just a mild concussion," Ava replied.

"Is that so? Very good, then. Laura, you have healing abilities. Heal them," Alaric issued before he began to walk towards the flames.

"As you wish, master." Laura slightly bowed her head before she made her way to Ava and Hina.

Now standing in front of the burning flames, the image burned into his very eyes, Alaric gripped his fist.

A small grin showing on his face, "Like... hell, I’ll let this go..."

While being healed, Ava still couldn’t keep her eyes away from Alaric. It was clear what happened was still weighing on her mind.

"Aurora," Alaric called forth.

(Yes, master~)

In less than a few seconds, Aurora appeared beside Alaric, a smile on her face with her arms folded as usual.

"You summoned me, master," she spoke.

Her smile soon turned into a frown upon seeing Alaric’s facial expression.

She instantly turned around to see that the warehouse she knew her master was working on had been destroyed.

"I swear it wasn’t me!" she shouted. "If anyone is capable of doing this, it’s Laura!"

"Hey! Don’t go assuming things, you idiot!" Laura screamed back.

"Well, it’s true! You’re violent and all that."

"Take that back! Don’t poison master’s mind; I’m elegant and beautiful! Not violent!"

"Enough."

Alaric’s word silenced them.

"Aurora, I summoned you because I need you to do something for me..."

He began.

"Right in the middle of the flames, there’s a head still intact. If it’s possible, I want you to sniff out the scent and tell me what it reminds you of," he said.

"Sniff?"

"Yes. One of your greatest assets is the ability to understand different scents, no matter how tainted it is. Meaning, even if the skin has been burnt to a crisp, you should still be able to tell its original smell."

As he spoke, the girls realized where he was going with it.

"Now I get it. Someone did this to your warehouse, and you want to find them. I’ll gladly help with that. Do give me a second."

With that, Aurora walked into the flames, the fire leaving a path for her to walk on.

Normally, if they were alive, Alaric would have used Character Profile on them and instantly been able to read their information.

But they are dead. His skill doesn’t activate on dead or broken things.

In which case, Aurora was his last option to find who was behind it.

From nowhere, Aurora intentionally crushed the head she had found with her fist after giving it a sniff. Her eyes now glowing with anger as she slowly looked at Alaric.

"I recognize the smell, master... They are from the Neuk Barony."
