Reincarnated as the Baron's son: My Infinite Card Upgrade System-Chapter 40: System helps.
[The Carrier didn’t quite get that.]
’Huh? What’s there to misunderstand? Tell me the ways I can earn CPs. I totally forgot,’ Alaric spoke again, his fist under his jaw.
[Oh.]
[Request confirmed.]
Alaric changed his position, now resting his back on the chair.
[You currently have three means of earning Claiming Points.
Through the conversion of Selling Points.
Through positive remarks from important subordinates.
Voluntary tasks.]
Alaric’s eyes widened a bit.
’Voluntary tasks?’ he asked back. It was definitely the first he was hearing of it.
[Yes, the system gives you a task that can only be updated after completion.]
’I’ve had this all along?’
[Correct.]
’And you didn’t tell me?’
[...]
’Why do I feel like you just added that feature? Come to think of it. I always end up having it easy when I come to you. Doesn’t that seem suspicious?’
[...Only when you use your brain.]
"Ah—"
(Young Master! Young Master! Is this thing even working?)
Alaric instantly knew who it was.
’Aurora? I take it you have news?’ he asked, standing up from the chair to walk around the room for a bit.
(Uhahahaha! Been so long since I heard your voice. Ahhhh~~ I could die right nowww~)
’Oi! Focus. News? Remember?’
(Pfft! Young Master is no fun. Anyway, I just got a listen from the ugly man. Good news is, he underestimates you by a lot. Bad news is, he is planning to send soldiers to destroy the road.)
’What?!’
(He doesn’t want you to meet the deadline. Probably his way of making things difficult for you.)
’Always the fat ones, man...’ Alaric settled on the bed. ’Do I seriously need to start rounding up my knights by this time?’
He panicked slightly.
It should take people from the Neuk Barony at least thirty minutes to get to the Montclair Barony.
(Hmm... Would the Young Master like me to handle them before they leave?)
Alaric thought to himself for a while. That wouldn’t be a bad plan since it would help him a lot, and at the same time, he wouldn’t need to make Neuk think he had anything to do with it.
Just when he was about to make his decision—
[Would you like to see the quest on task?]
’Huh?’ Alaric looked at the glowing screen.
[Yes] or [No]
It felt strange, like the system was indirectly begging him to do it.
’Uhm... yes,’ he responded.
[You have one quest.]
[Kill the enemies advancing towards your territory.]
Alaric was surprised.
No doubt, the system was weird.
How could it have known Neuk was going to send his men to destroy the road?
Just as he was questioning everything, he noticed something at the side of the screen, something he had missed.
[Reward: For every enemy you kill, you earn 30,000 CP.]
’I have to kill?...’
He stared at his hand for a while, memories from his previous world flooding back into his mind.
In order to survive, in order to go back home to his family alive, Henry had done a lot of things, that included killing the enemy.
Survival!
Killing wasn’t an issue for him, and yet...
"You’re really going to make me do this," he spoke out loud.
[The Carrier awaits your progress.]
’I have only 13,000 CP left in my account... I might as well.’
Alaric stood up from the bed. ’Besides, now that I think about it, this is a good opportunity for me. If I’m going to make the Neuk Barony understand my side, there’s no better chance than now.’
’Carrier, give me cards for combat.’
[Request confirmed.]
.....
Later that night.
Soldiers from the Neuk Barony had arrived at the one-filled forest.
From afar, they could see the road under construction.
They were seven in total, each one riding a horse with a blade and hammer with them.
"Are you for real? The Montclair Barony actually did all this by themselves? Seems almost hard to believe."
A soldier spoke.
"Right? How is the weakest barony in Forgineo really doing a project like this?" another one added.
"Tch! Doesn’t matter. Let’s get this over with so we can head back. This entire land reeks of disgust."
A soldier, who was annoyed, began to ride his horse.
The rest followed, each one already grabbing their hammer.
They knew what they needed to do—smash the ground until the whole thing collapsed. Since it was still in its building phase, there was no doubt it would crumble easily.
Reaching the road, each soldier was about to split off to take different areas where they’d start destroying the road.
To their surprise, someone appeared.
His presence caused them to all halt and turn their attention to the individual.
He was dressed in a black robe, with a white mask covering his face.
"Hello there, fine gentlemen. To what do I owe this visit?"
His voice was deep, deep enough to send a chill down their spines.
Like a reflex action, they all pulled out their weapons and took a few steps back.
"W-Who are you?" one of them asked.
"Ah right, how bad-mannered of me. Excuse me. My name is Chaos, the one feared by the villains and hated by the heroes."
"Huh?"
His words confused them but didn’t mean they didn’t understand what he was.
He was definitely their enemy.
"I can see most of you are Silver Ranks. It would be such a shame if you died here. If you turn back now, I promise to let you go," the individual spoke yet again.
"Hah! You can read my rank? I find that impressive. Still, don’t think for one second we are leaving this place, even if it means killing you."
—Silence.
"You wish to best me in combat, Kelvin?"
The knight’s eyes widened. Did the man in black just call his name?
Soon, his confusion turned into fear.
"Kill him!" the soldier shouted.
Almost immediately, one of the soldiers leaped down from his horse, charging forward with his body covered in energy.
With a swift move, he was right in front of the masked individual, blade aimed at the neck, until—
—Slash!
