Chapter 52: Calling out the king?

"What?" Elizabeth was astonished.

Erica quickly acted, snatching Sylus by the arm the moment she noticed the expression on her father’s face.

"Please don’t mind anything Sylus said; he is way too enthusiastic after winning the second trial," she chuckled nervously while trying to pull Sylus away. "I’ll talk to him and get him to calm down."

Sylus simply looked at her, carrying all the seriousness in the world.

"Are you that ignorant? Do you not wish to see your blood mother awake and well?"

"Sylus! I am trying to help you here!" Erica whispered, clearly worried.

But Sylus wasn’t scared.

Not now.

This was something he had planned to uncover after the Adon Vale.

In his absence, he wished to clear his mother’s name and bring everything out into the light.

He had always found this family weird to begin with.

And truthfully, this was a good way to challenge his father, something he had been dying to do.

So, he placed one hand on Erica’s head, a smile on his face.

"Let me handle this, okay? I promise I’ll be fine."

"Sylus-"

Then he turned his gaze back to his father, the man who was still calm despite all the accusations thrown at him.

Alfred, known to have an obsession with gathering knowledge, didn’t seem all that excited about this particular issue.

In fact, it seemed more like he was silently begging Sylus to stop.

"Father, I’m sure you’re wondering how I know this. All I can say to that is I have a strange ability, one that allows me to know pretty much any information I need to know about a person, though the rules may change. This ability allowed me to know you’ve used your star blessing on not just your mother, but Alfred as well. Not just one, but on multiple occasions as well. Am I correct?"

Martin uttered, "What could I have possibly done with my star blessing..."

"That is another thing that I intend to find out. You’d think you’d try your best to wake your first wife from her slumber, but you never tried, not once, in all the years I have been born. Isn’t that strange? Even while mother was receiving all the hate." Sylus looked at his mother.

"Do you remember anything about the first queen, Layla?"

"Of course I do. She is a very close friend of mine," Elizabeth replied. "Darling, you’re reaching too far into thi—"

"Have you ever tried to ask questions about where she is? If she’s such a close friend, how many times have you laid your eyes on her since she fell into a coma?"

Elizabeth stared at Sylus for a while, her eyes suddenly making a slight glow before they went back to normal. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

"Your father is handling it," she replied.

’As I thought, she can’t question it.’

Sylus gave a sad smile to her. "Even though people hate you and blame you for being involved with the first queen’s death, you still chose to stand with a man who never tried to clear your name."

Erica was confused, almost dumbfounded.

True, she had often heard rumors about Elizabeth being the one to kill the first queen so she could take the throne.

But that was about it; she thought it was mainly just rumors. Elizabeth never once complained about it, so much so that it might have never happened.

And while it was true her silence made the rumors spread even more, Erica never once thought it was ever this vast. People still respected Elizabeth, did they not?

Now that she thought about it, Elizabeth had never left the castle or explored the kingdom; it was often Martin who went around.

Hate?

Erica grabbed Elizabeth’s hands.

"Mother, we both know Sylus. He might be saying a lot of rubbish right now, but I need to know something: is there any reason why you never leave the castle?"

Elizabeth looked sad for a second. "I—I can’t face the people in the kingdom, but that is only because they think I am involved with the coma Layla is in. It’s normal; I can understand why they hate me; it’s something I have to come to terms with."

Erica looked to the side, a sad look on her face. "Sylus and I never got the chance to leave the castle, so I never knew how much you were hated, of sorts. Is that why you never told us anything about the first queen?"

"No, it’s because she can’t," Sylus chimed in. "Dear old Dad won’t allow that. Fortunately, there is one way to fix this. Let me heal the first queen and get her to clear my mother’s name and reveal what truly happened; that is all I want."

One could see the disgust etched on Martin’s face.

With a single motion, he stood to his feet.

That alone alerted everyone. Zani quickly stood in front of Sylus, ready to protect him if anything were to happen.

She was scared, her hands trembling slightly.

Sylus knew the truth: even if everyone in the room were to stand against Martin, they would never win.

The only way to come out on top was to battle authority with authority.

Taking a few steps forward, Martin laughed, clapping his hands.

"Very good, my son, you have once again proven yourself to be an Astrodial. You managed to figure all this out by your lonesome. I made sure to remove all topics regarding this issue, and yet somehow, you managed to dig it back up."

Sylus glared.

If he weren’t a child with memories of his adult life, he too would have fallen prey to it.

And if he didn’t have his star blessing, he wouldn’t have discovered it to begin with.

Fate stood by him.

"But you forgot one thing, dear son of mine. Calling me out with an incomplete theory means nothing. I can erase it all from the start again, like it never happened."

Hearing this, Elizabeth stepped forward. "What are you talking about, husband? Speaking like this makes you seem peccant. Please don’t—"

"Silence."

A single word left his mouth, and Elizabeth went mute, her eyes dead as though she had turned into a doll.

Seeing this made Erica panic a bit, as she ran towards her mother’s side, grabbing her hand.

"Mother?! Mother?!! What did you do to her?"

Martin looked at Erica and sighed.

"What a mess..." he blurted out. "Be silent as well."

Just like her mother, Erica turned mute.
