A deep uninterrupted silence reigned in the office as Major Kai and Ren Nora looked at the mercenary like he was on some drugs.

For Major Kai, personally in the silence, he experienced an upheaval of emotions as he subtly threw a glance at his leader.

This was an unforgettable moment for him because Ren Nora’s silence for the past few minutes at the accusations of the mercenary confirmed all his worst fears, fears that perhaps just like their predecessors, the Freegrid Collective would die and become swept in history.

The outcome of today’s battle hammered the nail on his conviction, but he still stubbornly clung to a distant hope of success till this stranger pointed it all out.

Now, he didn’t know what to believe in anymore.

’The General is out of ideas?’

’No, no, no...! I don’t believe it, the General always has a way out!’

As for Ren Nora, he quietly leaned back against his office chair, looking into the stranger’s deep black eyes as they both maintained eye contact for a long time, unwilling to blink as if testing each other in a staring contest.

And then Ren Nora finally broke the silence. "Those are pretty big words coming from a mere E Rank Ascended".

"The ocean was not born in a day," Leon calmly retorted. "Little drops of water makes a mighty ocean".

Ren Nora smirked, admitting none of the accusations that Leon made as instead, he asked. "And what is this grand plan of yours?"

Leon smiled, then he said. "Davis, project a blank board for me".

"Yes master".

Ren Nora raised his eyebrows as he saw the workings of the A.I.

The moment the blank board was projected, Leon took his digital pen and stood up as he started drawing and filling the board with texts.

As he wrote, he explained. "During the past few days, I’ve been doing a lot more of observation than fighting and I’ve noticed a lot of things".

"A large part of my focus have been on understanding the 5 Classes deeper. I’ve spent a long time observing, analyzing, and trying to break down the inner workings of the powers of all 5 Classes".

"One of the Classes that intrigue me the most is the NetRunner. Alongside the Quantum Shaper Class, I think they’re one of the unique Classes in the world".

"Their abilities like Neural Projection, their ability to connect to and interact with the psionic network in such a sophisticated manner, they’ve all intrigued me".

"I’ve not really had time to further my research but in the past 4 days since coming to Iron Reef, I found an opportunity to further my research because here, I get to watch some of the greatest NetRunners in the world fight".

Leon smiled. "Afterall, it’s not every day that you get to meet a C Rank Ascended not to talk of a C Rank NetRunner".

"Every single day for the past 4 days, I’ve been observing, analyzing, and researching and my research made me believe that the workings of the NetRunner Class is very similar to a certain process from where I come from".

Leon looked at Ren Nora. "General, do you know what is called a Google search?"

Ren Nora quietly looked at the mercenary for a few seconds, then he shook his head.

Leon smiled. "My research have led me to believe that the powers and abilities of NetRunners can be illustrated by a simple Google search".

"Don’t ask, I’ll explain".

"Where I come from, Google is a search engine, and a Google search is a multi-layered journey that occurs in a fraction of a second, moving from your handheld electronic device to massive global infrastructure".

"Within a fraction of a second, a series of activities take place as the search process goes from phone to server and back".

Leon raised a finger for illustration as he continued. "First, entering a query into the Google app or browser initiates a DNS Resolution".

"In case you don’t know, DNS resolution is the process of translating human-readable domain names like ’www.example.com’ into machine-readable IP addresses like ’192.0.2.1’ allowing browsers to load internet resources".

Seeing the sudden twinkle in Ren Nora’s eyes, Leon smiled. "Does it finally sound similar to you?"

Ren Nora nodded. "That’s part of the process of Neural Projection".

Leon nodded in satisfaction, then he continued. "By initiating a DNS Resolution, this translates ’google.com’ into a numerical IP address that uniquely identifies the phone, in Ascended terms this can be a NetRunner".

"After that, a secure connection is established via HTTPS. This involves ’handshakes’ between the device and Google’s servers to ensure data privacy".

"In Ascended terms, after DNS resolution, a NetRunner opens a stable connection to the psionic network, enabling them to hop through neural interfaces and overlays".

Leon continued, drawing a line on the board. "After this, the request travels from the phone through local cell towers or Wi-Fi routers into a global network of high-speed fiber optic cables".

"Load Balancers at Google’s data centers receive the request and route it to an available server to ensure efficiency".

"Multiple requests can be processed at the same time as Google data centers usually have multiple servers to answer queries and requests".

"And then the backend processing starts," Leon grinned. "That’s where the magic happens".

"Google’s A.I cleans the query by removing stop words like ’the’ and ’of’, then it expands the query with synonyms to understand the user’s intent".

"After that, instead of searching the live web, Google searches its index. The index is a massive database of pre-crawled pages".

"Over 200 factors, including the user’s location, language, and the page’s freshness determine the final ranking".

"After all of this, the server compiles the ranked results into an HTML page. This is sent back to the device where the browser renders the text, images, and maps seen on the screen".

Leon smiled. "This is the process of a simple google search".

"Most people think it’s easy, but it’s a series of processes like I just explained done at extremely high speeds by high-speed servers to generate and serve the final result to the person surfing the internet within a fraction of a second".

"I drew a parallel between this and NetRunners," Leon grinned. "It may seem simple, but a NetRunner using Neural Projection and other psionic-network related powers is a series of processes that’s only so fast because a NetRunner himself exists as a self-sustaining high-speed server".

Ren Nora frowned slightly. "Where are you driving at with all of this?"

"Calm down, no rushing," Leon smiled, then he looked at the digital board. "Well, what I’m trying to say is that after 4 days of understanding this process and drawing parallels between them..."

His eyes gleamed. "I found a way to trap a C Rank NetRunner!"
