Quick Transmigration: The Mad Beauty Refuses to Be the Scapegoat!-Chapter 385 - 7: The General Mansion’s Cast-Off Scapegoat Wife (Part 7)
Tie Yi always slept well, usually falling asleep the moment his head hit the pillow.
Tonight, however, he was still exhausted. After three years of military campaigns, he returned to the capital and was appointed as the Great General. Numerous officials wanted to curry favor with him, but Tie Yi was not interested in dealing with them, so he stayed at the training ground on the outskirts of the city from morning until night, only returning in the evening.
He turned over, lying under just a thin quilt during the bitter winter, yet he felt no cold. On the contrary, the temperature under the quilt kept rising, leaving him restless and unable to sleep.
He closed his eyes, but the images in his mind wouldn’t go away.
He was already twenty-seven, joined the army at fifteen, and since then, he lived a life of licking blood off the blade, never considering marriage or children.
He had felt desire for women before, but women were afraid of him, and he wasn’t interested in forceful pursuits. Most of the time, he could handle things himself.
So when his mother proposed finding him a good wife, Tie Yi didn’t ask many questions, letting her handle the arrangements. It wasn’t until after the bride entered the door that he found out he had married a girl from the Marquis Mansion. He didn’t pay attention to her name; he just knew she wasn’t the one his mother preferred.
On their wedding night, he drank a few more cups, and his years of battlefield ferocity were even more pronounced with the alcohol. Tie Yi knew he looked more terrifying after drinking, and recalling that Miss Xu mentioned the new wife was frail and timid, he feared causing a commotion that might be fatal, so he went to stay in the countryside barracks that night.
The next morning, he heard that the new wife had sneaked back to her parents’ home.
Tie Yi didn’t have much emotion about it, as affairs of the heart were as insignificant as clouds to him. He never paid attention or bothered to waste emotions on them. If the woman wanted to leave, she could go as she pleased.
He just didn’t expect that she would come back tonight.
And appear before him in such a manner.
At this moment, a voice came from outside the house.
"General, I made a pot of porridge to warm your stomach. Are you asleep? If not, I’ll bring it in for you."
It was Miss Xu’s voice.
Tie Yi got up, threw on his clothes, opened the door, and strode out.
"No need."
Xu Ruling followed behind, softly asking.
"General, where are you going so late?"
"To the military camp. Don’t follow. Go back and rest."
Xu Ruling paused at the door, watching the man mount his horse and gallop away, feeling her heart gradually relax.
It seemed the Iron General had little interest in that woman. That’s good; that’s good.
The maid behind her cautiously asked with the porridge in hand.
"Miss, what about this porridge?"
"Enjoy it yourself."
"Thank you for your generosity, Miss."
Throughout the night, Jiang Lai slept blissfully.
The General Mansion had comfortable bedding, and the room was much warmer. Jiang Lai curled up under the covers, with only her head exposed, just about to sink back into sleep when a knock on the door sounded.
"Madam, it’s almost 5 a.m., time to get up and freshen up."
It was not yet 5 a.m. Jiang Lai frowned and replied.
"Don’t disturb me, let me sleep a bit longer."
The knocking persisted stubbornly.
"Madam, if you don’t get up, the old lady will blame you."
Jiang Lai opened the door with a cold face, looking at the new maid outside. Although the maid had her head lowered, there was not an ounce of respect on her face. Her knocking made it clear she was afraid Jiang Lai wouldn’t wake up.
"What’s your name again?"
"Servant Chun Yue."
"Chun Yue... the name sounds unpleasant. From now on, you’ll be called Miss Yue, got it?" 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
Chun Yue quickly shook her head, at last showing some reverence on her face.
"Chun Yue likes her current name better. Please allow it, Madam."
"Alright, from now on you’re Miss Yue. If you talk back, I will get angry."
Chun Yue didn’t care whether Jiang Lai was angry or not.
What she cared about was if Miss Xu found out she had changed her name, she wouldn’t have a good life in the General Mansion.
After all, it was Miss Xu who was truly in charge in the General Mansion. Even the old lady was willing to listen to her, let alone this newly arrived and unesteemed lady.
"Madam, please don’t make it difficult for this servant, I..."
"Stand up."
Jiang Lai suddenly softened her tone. Chun Yue stood up doubtfully. Before she could see Jiang Lai’s face clearly, a slap suddenly landed on her face.
It wasn’t loud, but it was intensely painful, making her face turn to the side, and tears fall from her eyes.
Jiang Lai withdrew her hand, frowning slightly as she carefully rubbed her palm, her tone indifferent.
"Do you know your name now?"
"Servant... servant is called Miss Yue."
Jiang Lai smiled.
"You’re called Miss Yue, which means you’re my person. In the future, if anyone tries to bully you, I won’t let it happen. Don’t worry."
Chun Yue was tearful yet deeply shocked inside.
She didn’t expect that this new wife, who ran away on her wedding night, had such a fierce temper. Now she dared not show any more disrespect and kept her head bowed submissively.
"Madam, about the old lady..."
"Help me get ready. Let’s go."
In front of the ancestral hall, Jiang Lai had been waiting for a long time, yet there was no sign of movement inside.
The temperature outside was very low, with bursts of cold wind. Fortunately, Jiang Lai was well-dressed, her black fox fur cloak wrapping her snugly from head to toe.
Last night, Tie Yi left, leaving behind his cloak. Otherwise, standing here would have chilled her to the bone.
Chun Yue stood beside her, wearing a rabbit fur neckpiece, and dressed in thicker clothes. After standing for a long time, her cheeks were rosy.
She began to look at Jiang Lai with renewed appreciation now.
Before leaving, Jiang Lai instructed her to wear more clothes and even gave her a rabbit fur collar from her dowry. Otherwise, she would have been freezing by now.
That old lady was indeed ruthless.
Treating a newlywed lady this harshly, making her wait outside so long on her first formal greeting, showed that it was clearly an attempt to freeze her to death.
After receiving a slap and getting a rabbit fur collar, mixed with Jiang Lai’s warning to dress warmly, Chun Yue was now entirely aligned with Jiang Lai.
The Madam was not to be trifled with, and she was highly intelligent. She would undoubtedly find her footing in the General Mansion.
Even if the General didn’t favor her, it wouldn’t matter. If she bore children in the future, Miss Xu’s influence would diminish.
Thinking of this, Chun Yue whispered.
"Madam, Miss Xu must also be inside."
Jiang Lai nodded, silently counting the time. Just then, Little Buding alerted her.
"Tie Yi is here."
"Got it."
With that, Jiang Lai first bent slightly, her steady stance faltering as her legs began to tremble. When she heard the sound of footsteps, she closed her eyes and fell back without hesitation.
Just like last night, she fell into a broad embrace, a strong and sturdy arm lightly wrapping around her waist. Soon, her feet left the ground, and she comfortably laid in the man’s arms.
