Chapter 92: The Dean

The ceremony concluded gradually rather than abruptly. After Vice Dean Seraphine finished her speech and formally declared the opening of the academic year, the massive gathering on the ceremonial grounds began to loosen. The organized rows of students slowly dissolved into clusters of conversation as instructors stepped away from the platform and academy staff began guiding the flow of students across the grounds. The quiet discipline that had held the thousands of young scholars in place moments earlier transformed into the lively murmur of excitement, curiosity, and nervous energy.

Students stretched their arms after standing so long, adjusted their uniforms, and immediately began discussing the academy grounds around them. Some spoke about the speech they had just heard, while others were already speculating about professors, courses, and the difficulty of the coming year.

"Did you hear what she said about challenges?" one student whispered to another.

"Yeah... doesn’t sound like this place will be easy."

"That’s the Imperial Academy for you."

Groups began dispersing from the central field, guided by senior students and academy assistants who pointed them toward the various areas of campus. Some were directed toward the dormitory halls to complete their accommodation registration, while others were told to begin familiarizing themselves with the major facilities of the academy.

The entire campus soon transformed into a moving stream of students exploring their new environment.

Mira stood near the edge of the ceremonial grounds, stretching slightly before glancing around the enormous campus.

"Well," she said with a small smile, "that’s officially the start of the year."

Evelyn looked around, her eyes scanning the towering buildings surrounding the grounds. Even though she had seen the academy from a distance before, standing inside it was a completely different experience. The scale of the place was overwhelming. Stone towers rose into the sky, connected by elegant bridges and balconies. Courtyards stretched between the buildings, filled with fountains, gardens, and training fields.

"It’s even bigger than I imagined," Evelyn admitted.

Mira laughed softly.

"Everyone says that the first time."

"So where do we start?"

Mira turned toward one of the large stone pathways leading deeper into the academy grounds.

"Campus tour."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

"You’re volunteering to be the guide?"

"I’ve been here longer than you," Mira replied confidently.

They began walking along one of the main academy paths. The wide stone road curved gently through the campus, passing rows of statues depicting famous scholars, knights, and mages who had once studied there.

Students walked past them constantly, some moving quickly with maps in hand while others wandered aimlessly, clearly overwhelmed by the layout of the academy.

The first major structure Mira pointed out stood directly ahead of them.

"That," she said, gesturing toward an enormous building of glass and white stone, "is the Grand Library."

Evelyn stopped walking for a moment to look at it properly.

The building was massive. Tall windows stretched across its six floors, reflecting the sunlight like mirrors. Elegant columns framed the entrance, and a large bronze emblem of the academy hung above the doors.

"That’s a library?" Evelyn asked in disbelief.

Mira nodded proudly.

"It contains most of the academy’s magical and historical archives."

"How many books are inside?"

"Thousands," Mira answered casually.

Evelyn stared at the structure.

"Of course it does."

They continued walking, passing a wide open field surrounded by tall crystal pillars.

"This area is used for arcane training," Mira explained. "Students practice spellcasting here."

Several students were already gathered within the field. Some were attempting small elemental spells while instructors supervised from a distance. Whenever a spell went slightly out of control, the crystal pillars surrounding the field emitted a faint glow, stabilizing the mana in the area.

"Safety barriers," Mira said. "Without them, half the students would blow themselves up on the first day."

Evelyn watched one student struggle to produce a proper flame spell.

"Looks difficult."

"It gets harder," Mira said with a grin.

Further along the path they reached a circular arena surrounded by tiered stone seating.

"This is the combat arena," Mira continued.

Inside the arena, several students were already sparring with wooden practice weapons under the watchful eye of a training instructor. The sounds of clashing wood echoed faintly through the air.

Evelyn folded her arms as she watched the sparring match.

"Looks intense."

"You should see the tournaments," Mira said.

Meanwhile, across the academy grounds, Aurelion had followed the group of instructors into the Academic Administration Hall.

The building stood directly behind the main ceremonial platform, a tall structure built from polished stone and decorated with tall arching windows. Compared to the lively campus outside, the interior of the building was calm and organized.

Professors walked through the corridors in quiet conversation while academy assistants moved between offices carrying documents.

Aurelion entered a large registration chamber alongside the other instructors. A long wooden desk stood near the center of the room, where several large ledgers had been placed for the faculty to sign.

One by one, the professors stepped forward to register their attendance for the start of the academic year.

When Aurelion’s turn arrived, he approached the desk calmly.

The ledger was thick, its pages filled with signatures of instructors who had served the academy for years. He picked up the quill resting beside the book and wrote his name in neat, precise handwriting among the others.

The academy staff member overseeing the ledger glanced briefly at the name before nodding.

"Welcome back," the man said respectfully.

Aurelion gave a small nod in return before placing the quill back on the desk.

After completing the formalities, he left the chamber and stepped back outside into the courtyard of the administration hall.

The sunlight had grown brighter now, illuminating the open space before the building.

And standing there, leaning casually against one of the stone pillars, was Rowan.

He had his arms crossed as he watched students pass through the courtyard. Unlike the students moving around them, Rowan wore no academy uniform. His attire was simple but practical, suited more for a guard than a scholar. When he saw Aurelion step outside, he pushed himself away from the pillar.

"Finished already?" Rowan asked.

"Yes."

Rowan glanced around the busy courtyard.

"Place hasn’t changed much."

"Not entirely," Aurelion replied.

Students moved past them in every direction, some laughing loudly as they compared schedules while others hurried toward different buildings. Rowan walked beside Aurelion as they crossed the courtyard.

"So where are we heading now?" Rowan asked.

"The administrative wing."

Rowan gave him a curious look but didn’t question further.

They entered the building again and walked through a quieter section of the academy. The hallways here were less crowded, lined with tall windows and wooden doors leading to various administrative offices. Eventually they reached the end of a long corridor.

At the far end stood a large wooden door, its surface polished and engraved with the emblem of the academy. Rowan’s eyes drifted upward to the plaque mounted above it.

Dean’s Chamber.

He raised an eyebrow slightly but said nothing. Aurelion knocked once before opening the door.

Inside, the room was spacious and elegant. Tall shelves filled with books lined the walls, and a large wooden desk stood near the center of the chamber. Sunlight poured through the tall windows behind the desk, illuminating the quiet interior.

Standing beside the desk was Seraphine. She turned as the door opened, her silver hair catching the light as she looked toward Aurelion.

A calm smile appeared on her face.

"Welcome back, Dean." The door closed softly behind him.
