Chapter 91: The Opening Ceremony

Morning unfolded slowly over the vast grounds of the Imperial Academy. The first light of dawn came on the academy buildings, reflecting softly from glass windows and polished marble columns. The academy, usually calm during the earliest hours, was unusually alive that day. The new academic year was about to begin, and the ceremonial grounds at the heart of the campus had already begun filling with students.

The ceremonial grounds themselves were enormous, a vast open field framed by long white walkways and gardens trimmed with perfect precision. Tall stone statues of legendary scholars and battle mages stood along the borders of the field, watching silently over the gathering crowd as if bearing witness to the next generation of talent entering the academy.

Students arrived from every direction. Some came in small groups, chatting excitedly while adjusting their uniforms. Others stood quietly, observing the massive gathering around them. For many of the younger students, especially those who had only just arrived in the capital, the sheer scale of the academy was overwhelming. Uniforms of deep navy blue and silver filled the field.

The academy had strict dress regulations, and every student present wore the standard uniform—dark coats embroidered with the academy’s insignia over the chest, silver-lined collars, and polished boots. Some had already begun to wear their uniforms with confidence, while others looked slightly uncomfortable, as though still adjusting to the weight of the academy’s expectations.

Conversations drifted across the field in every direction.

"Is this your first year too?"

"Yeah... I just arrived yesterday."

"I heard the academy is brutal with exams."

"No kidding. My older brother studied here. He said half the class fails in the first year."

"That’s comforting."

Nearby, another group of students were whispering more excitedly.

"Look how many instructors there are."

"I counted at least thirty already."

"That’s not even half of them."

Students gradually arranged themselves in loose rows across the field. Academy assistants walked along the edges of the crowd, occasionally directing students into clearer lines so that the ceremony could proceed without chaos.

At the front of the ceremonial grounds stood a large raised platform made of polished stone. Behind it rose the towering structure of the Main Academic Hall, a building so large that it dominated the entire courtyard. Tall marble columns framed its entrance, and banners bearing the academy’s emblem hung between them.

The instructors had begun to gather on the platform. One by one, professors stepped into position, forming an orderly line behind the central podium. Their attire differed slightly from the students. Instead of the dark navy student uniforms, the instructors wore long academic coats and robes decorated with gold and silver embroidery that represented their departments.

Some were older scholars with years of experience written across their faces. Others were younger instructors who stood with confident posture as they waited for the ceremony to begin.

Among them stood Aurelion. He wore the formal instructor coat of the academy, darker than the student uniform and marked with subtle silver patterns along the sleeves and collar. Compared to the professors standing beside him, his youthful appearance made him stand out slightly, though his calm expression showed no discomfort.

He stood quietly among the instructors as he observed the gathering students below.

From the platform, the entire field was visible. Hundreds of students. Perhaps even more.

The quiet hum of conversation rolled across the grounds like a distant tide.

Rowan stood near the side of the platform, leaning casually against one of the stone pillars that supported the structure. Unlike the professors and students, he wore no academy uniform. His presence was unofficial, but those familiar with the academy understood the situation immediately—he was clearly acting as a personal guard.

From where he stood, he could easily watch both the instructors and the gathering students.

"Busy place," Rowan muttered quietly to himself.

The instructors continued to assemble until the entire platform was filled with them.

Then slowly, the conversations across the field began to fade.

A figure stepped forward from the tall entrance doors of the Main Academic Hall.

Seraphine.

Her long silver hair moved gently in the morning breeze as she walked toward the podium. She wore the formal robes of the Vice Dean, dark fabric embroidered with elegant silver threads that shimmered faintly under the sunlight.

Even before she spoke, her presence commanded attention.

Students began nudging one another.

"Hey."

"Look."

"That’s the Vice Dean."

The murmurs spread quickly through the crowd.

Seraphine reached the podium and paused for a moment. Her calm gaze swept across the ceremonial grounds, taking in the hundreds of students standing before her.

The quiet gradually deepened until the entire field fell silent.

Then she spoke.

"Students of the Imperial Academy."

Her voice carried clearly across the entire ceremonial ground, aided by subtle mana amplification woven into the platform.

"Welcome."

The word hung in the air for a moment.

"For many of you standing here today, this is the beginning of a new Chapter in your lives."

Her gaze moved slowly across the rows of students.

"Some of you have traveled great distances to reach this academy. Others come from noble houses that have served the empire for generations."

She folded her hands calmly behind her back.

"But once you stand within these grounds... those differences no longer matter."

A few students shifted slightly as they listened.

"At the Imperial Academy, you are not defined by the name you carry."

"You are defined by the effort you give."

The field remained silent.

"This academy has produced some of the greatest minds and warriors the empire has ever known."

"Scholars who reshaped magical theory."

"Commanders who led armies to victory."

"Mages who changed the course of history."

She paused briefly.

"And every one of them once stood where you stand now."

Her eyes sharpened slightly.

"Confused."

"Nervous."

"Unsure of what the future would demand of them."

A faint ripple of understanding passed through the students.

"But they endured."

"They learned."

"They grew stronger."

Seraphine rested one hand lightly on the podium.

"You will be tested here."

"Your knowledge will be challenged."

"Your resolve will be challenged."

"Even your confidence will be challenged."

She looked across the students one final time.

"But if you endure those trials..."

"...then one day, you may stand among the legends whose statues watch over these grounds."

She stepped slightly away from the podium.

"Welcome to the Imperial Academy."

For a moment, silence filled the field.

Then applause erupted.

Students clapped enthusiastically, some cheering softly as the tension that had filled the gathering slowly eased.

As the applause faded, conversations immediately began again across the field.

"That speech was actually good."

"Yeah."

"She’s impressive."

Another student frowned slightly.

"Wait a second."

"If she’s the Vice Dean... then who’s the Dean?"

The question spread quickly among nearby students.

"I’ve never seen the Dean before."

"Me neither."

"Does he not attend the opening ceremony?"

One student shrugged.

"My older brother studied here."

"And?"

"He said the Vice Dean always gives the speech."

"Always?"

"Yeah."

"So where’s the Dean?"

A girl nearby leaned closer and whispered,

"Apparently nobody really knows."

"What do you mean?"

"They say the Dean rarely shows himself."

"That sounds suspicious."

Another student joined the conversation.

"I heard he’s incredibly powerful."

"How powerful?"

"Like... archmage level."

"No way."

"That’s what people say."

Another student scoffed.

"I heard something different."

"What?"

"I heard he’s not even a mage."

"What do you mean?"

"I heard he’s an aura sword master."

"That makes even less sense."

The rumors continued spreading through the crowd.

"Maybe he’s both."

"Can someone even be both?"

"Who knows."

Up on the platform, Seraphine calmly observed the students chatting among themselves.

After allowing the crowd a few moments, she stepped forward again.

The mana amplification spell activated once more.

"Students."

The field fell silent again.

Seraphine looked across the gathering one final time.

"The ceremony is now concluded."

She paused briefly before finishing the announcement. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

"And with that..."

"...the Imperial Academy officially begins."

The new academic year had begun.

And for the hundreds of students standing on those grounds—

their journey had just started.
