Chapter 93: The Backstory

"Welcome back, Dean." Seraphine said to Aurelion.

Aurelion walked to the throne like cushy seat behind the desk and sat in it.

Ahh you guys again don’t understand what just happened. Yes, you heard it right. I am the dean of the Imperial system and the one who runs this place. To understand it more clearly, let’s go back in time.

Four years earlier, the land where the Imperial Academy now stood had looked very different. Back then, the grounds had not been empty, An academy had already existed there, though calling it an academy was already a compliment. The place had been built decades earlier during an attempt by the empire to centralize education for both scholars and combat trainees. In its early years, it had shown promise. But due to neglect, and lack of proper leadership had slowly reduced it to a shadow of what it once was.

The buildings still stood, but barely. Stone walls were cracked and weathered. Roof tiles had fallen from several halls, and the once lively training fields had become uneven patches of dirt and grass. The library remained intact, but the books within were outdated and poorly maintained. Only a handful of instructors still worked there, more out of loyalty to the institution than any real belief in its future.

Students still attended, but not many. Most noble houses had long stopped sending their heirs there. Instead, they hired private tutors or sent their children to smaller but more reputable academies scattered across the empire.

The place survived in name alone. It was in this state that Aurelion first arrived. At that time he was only eight years old, though anyone who spoke with him quickly realized that age did little to define him. When he first stepped onto the grounds of the old academy, he did not rush forward with excitement like most children would.

Instead, he walked slowly. Rowan followed behind him, observing the surroundings with open skepticism. The two of them moved through the broken courtyard where weeds had begun to push through the cracked stone paths.

"This place is falling apart," Rowan said bluntly.

Aurelion didn’t disagree.

His eyes moved across the courtyard, studying the worn buildings, the empty training fields, and the faded banners hanging from the walls.

"Yes," he said calmly.

Rowan crossed his arms as they approached what used to be the main lecture hall.

"So why are we here?"

Aurelion stopped in the middle of the courtyard.

For a moment he said nothing. The space was quiet except for the distant sound of wind brushing against loose tiles and broken windows.

Then he looked around the grounds once more. The land itself was large. Much larger than most academies. It sat between two major trade routes leading into the capital, which meant it was accessible from nearly every major province of the empire. Even in its neglected state, the place held potential.

"The foundation already exists," Aurelion said.

Rowan frowned.

"For what?"

Aurelion turned his gaze toward the tallest remaining structure in the old academy.

"For something better."

That was the moment the idea truly began.

The transformation of the academy did not begin overnight. Aurelion understood that rebuilding something of this scale required careful planning. Instead of rushing into construction immediately, he spent the first several weeks studying the institution itself.

Old records were brought from the imperial archives. Blueprints of the original academy structures were gathered.

Several surviving instructors from the old academy were interviewed. What Aurelion discovered was simple.

The academy had not failed because its concept was flawed. It had failed because it had been ignored. The empire had never fully invested in its development, and over time the institution had slowly faded into obscurity.

Aurelion decided that if the empire had abandoned the project... he would rebuild it himself. The first phase of the transformation focused on restoration.

Rather than demolishing everything, Aurelion ordered a structural survey of every existing building. Engineers and architects were brought in to determine which structures could be salvaged.

Many of the outer walls were still strong. Several lecture halls only required reinforcement. The central courtyard still had a solid stone foundation beneath the cracked surface. Instead of destroying the past, Aurelion chose to rebuild upon it.

Construction teams soon arrived from nearby cities. Skilled masons began repairing the damaged walls while carpenters replaced broken beams and roof supports. The cracked courtyard stones were removed and replaced with polished marble slabs.

Gradually, the academy began to look alive again. But restoration alone was never the true goal. Once the original structures had been stabilized, the second phase began.

Expansion.

Aurelion’s vision for the academy extended far beyond what had existed before.

New towers were constructed along the outer edges of the campus to house magical laboratories and research chambers. These towers were built with reinforced mana-conductive stone, allowing scholars to safely conduct advanced magical experiments.

Near the center of the campus, a massive Grand Library was designed. The structure rose six floors high and was built to store thousands of magical texts, historical records, and arcane manuscripts.

The old training fields were completely redesigned.

Instead of simple practice areas, Aurelion ordered the construction of reinforced Arcane Training Grounds. Large crystal pillars were installed around the fields to regulate unstable mana during spellcasting practice.

Combat arenas were also built.

These circular stone arenas allowed students to train in both swordsmanship and aura combat under the supervision of experienced instructors.

As construction continued, the academy’s layout slowly began to resemble the institution it would eventually become. Workers moved across the campus every day.

Stone blocks were transported. Scaffolding covered half-built towers.

And gradually, the ruins of the old academy disappeared beneath new walls and new structures. But buildings alone could not create an academy.

Aurelion knew that the most important element was people.

During the third year of construction, he began sending invitations across the empire. Scholars, mages, retired knights, and experienced instructors were invited to join the new academy as faculty. Some were skeptical.

The idea of a young royal overseeing the construction of a grand academy sounded strange to many. But when they visited the site and saw the scale of what was being built... their doubts faded.

Renowned scholars agreed to oversee magical studies. Veteran knights volunteered to train combat students. Several respected battle mages joined the faculty as instructors. Slowly, a true academic community began to form.

The final phase of the project focused on refinement.

With the main buildings completed, attention shifted to smaller details. Gardens were planted throughout the campus, filling empty spaces between buildings with greenery and flowers.

Stone statues of legendary scholars and warriors were placed along the walkways, reminding students of the legacy they were stepping into.

Water channels were installed beneath the campus to help regulate mana flow through the academy’s magical systems. Advanced barrier spells were placed around training areas to ensure student safety during magical practice.

Every detail was carefully planned. Not only to create a place of learning but to create a place worthy of the empire’s future leaders.

Four years after Aurelion first walked through the ruins of the old academy... the transformation was complete.

Where broken buildings had once stood, tall towers now rose into the sky.

Where empty fields had once gathered dust, students would soon train and study.

Where a forgotten institution once struggled to survive...

a new academy had been born.

The Imperial Academy.

And although the world would soon believe that it had always existed this way...

only a few knew how much effort had gone into rebuilding it.

All leading to the moment when the academy would finally open its gates to the next generation.

The Structure was ready, all it needed now was the people who will run it.
