Oops, I Accidentally Fell In Love With My Step Mom-Chapter 64: The Thing in Your Skin
Recap of Chapter 63
On the Shadowed Road, Kael and the others found themselves hunted by perfect copies—doppelgängers that mimicked their every move but struck with greater strength and speed. Fighting them felt like striking smoke: wounds closed, laughter echoed, and the shadows only grew hungrier. When Milo faltered, his shadow lunged not to kill, but to merge. Blackness slithered across his skin, and in a single breath, he began to scream.
Main Story
The sound of Milo’s scream ripped through the trees. It wasn’t human anymore—it was layered, broken, like dozens of voices being crushed into one throat.
"MILO!" Kael’s shout echoed in his chest as he lunged forward, grabbing at the black slick that was crawling over his friend’s neck and jaw. It felt like oil but burned like ice, searing Kael’s fingertips as if punishing him for even trying.
Elena slashed downward, her blade slicing through the tar-like shadow still clinging to Milo’s arm. The inky mess split apart, spraying across the ground, but instead of dying, it seeped back toward him like water to a sponge.
Milo clawed at his own skin. His nails drew blood, but the shadow only sank deeper, streaks of black pulsing across his veins. He gasped, choking, his voice warping. "It’s—inside—it’s—"
The forest whispered with him. A thousand soft voices, perfectly in sync, like leaves rubbing together in an unseen wind. Inside. Inside. Inside.
Kael shoved him against a tree, holding his face steady. "Don’t let it take you! Fight it!"
Milo’s eyes flickered—brown, then black, then both at once. His lips trembled. For a moment, Kael saw his friend still there, terrified. Then something shifted. Milo’s grin stretched wider than his muscles should allow, the skin on his cheeks tugging unnaturally.
His voice deepened, a chorus speaking through his mouth. "He’s already mine."
The shadow in Milo’s body slammed Kael backwards, impossible strength hurling him through undergrowth. Branches snapped against his ribs as he landed hard on his back, air knocked out of him.
Elena didn’t hesitate. She charged, her blade flashing silver. Every strike aimed not to kill, but to subdue—to disable without ending Milo’s life. Her eyes burned with focus, but beneath it was something else: fear.
Milo’s shadow-possessed body met her with a grace he had never possessed. His movements were fluid, almost beautiful, dodging her sword with uncanny precision. He ducked, weaved, then countered—not clumsy, not hesitant, but as though he’d been training his whole life.
Steel sparked against bark as Elena’s strike missed. She growled. "That’s not him. That’s you."
The thing inside Milo only smiled through his lips. "I am him now."
Kael staggered up, clutching a jagged branch as a makeshift weapon. "The hell you are."
The other shadows stood at the edge of the clearing, watching. They no longer pressed the fight—they didn’t need to. All their focus was on Milo. His fall was enough.
Aaron lay still on the ground, unconscious but twitching faintly, his body reacting to the whispers swirling louder around them.
"Milo!" Kael bellowed, shoving forward with his branch like a spear. "If you can hear me—listen! Don’t let this thing wear your skin!"
For the briefest heartbeat, Milo’s body froze. His chest heaved, his jaw clenched, and his eyes went brown again. Sweat streamed down his face. He whispered in his real voice: "Kael... help me... it feels like drowning."
Kael’s heart clenched. "Then take my hand." He dropped the branch and reached out.
Milo’s trembling hand lifted. For a moment, hope surged. Their fingers touched.
Then the shadow surged again. Milo’s eyes blackened fully, his smile snapped back, and with a roar, he twisted Kael’s arm in a brutal wrench that nearly dislocated his shoulder.
Kael screamed.
The shadow inside Milo laughed with Milo’s voice. "He begged you to save him. And you failed."
Elena roared in fury and charged again, her blade cutting across his chest. This time, blood sprayed—red, human blood. Milo staggered, clutching the wound.
For a split second, his face crumpled in agony, the real Milo screaming through the pain. "Elena—stop—please—I’m still—"
Then his head snapped up, smile curling again. The wound sealed before their eyes.
Elena froze, horror spreading across her face. "No..."
Kael dragged himself up, panting, gripping his useless arm. His vision blurred, but he didn’t care. "You’re still in there, Milo! I don’t care what this thing says—you’re not gone. You’re not gone!"
The whispers around them swelled, the trees shaking as if alive. One with us. One with us. One with us.
The shadow inside Milo tilted his head, studying Kael with inhuman calm. "Do you know what it feels like, Kael? To be erased while you’re still breathing? He’s screaming inside, but no one can hear him. Not even you."
Kael’s chest heaved. Rage mixed with terror. He pointed his shaking hand at the thing. "Then I’ll rip you out with my own damn hands." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
The other shadows laughed in unison. The forest echoed with the sound, drowning the clearing in cruel, endless mirth.
And Milo—their friend—stepped forward with the shadow in his skin, his smile sharp and alien.
"Try."
