Chapter 14: Chapter 14

Kael’s POV.

I sat at the high table in the Fang Pack’s throne chamber, the air filled with the smell of roasted meat and wine.

The welcome party was loud, full of laughter and clinking glasses, dancers spinning across the floor, their shadows flickering in the torchlight.

My Luna, Celeste—or so everyone thought—had slipped out moments ago, her silver gown catching the light as she left.

I’d let her go, figuring she needed a moment to breathe. This place, with its staring wolves and heavy expectations, could choke anyone.

Especially her. Aria. Not Celeste. I knew the truth, had known it since the mate bond sparked that first night.

Her scent, her eyes, the way she trembled under my touch—it wasn’t Celeste. It was Aria, the Omega hiding behind her sister’s face.

I shifted in my seat, my fingers tight around a goblet I hadn’t touched. My eyes scanned the room, restless.

Something felt off, like a storm brewing just out of sight. Then I saw him. Alpha Nicholas, perched on his throne like a king, his silver-streaked hair glinting, his dark eyes sharp and cunning.

He’d been watching Aria all night, his gaze too steady, too intense. It wasn’t just admiration. He knew something, or suspected it.

My jaw clenched, my wolf stirring, a low growl rumbling deep inside me. I didn’t trust him. Not one bit.

As the dancers spun and the crowd cheered, Nicholas stood, his movements smooth but deliberate.

He slipped toward a side door, barely noticed by the revelers. My gut twisted. A host Alpha didn’t leave his own party, not without a reason.

My eyes narrowed, tracking him until he disappeared through the door. My wolf growled louder, pacing in my chest, urging me to move.

I leaned toward Brian, my Beta, who stood nearby, his easy smile fading when he saw my face.

"Find out where my Luna is," I said, my voice low, calm, but sharp like a blade. I didn’t need to say more. Brian knew me well enough to hear the warning in my tone.

He nodded and left, weaving through the crowd, his dark hair catching the light. I kept my eyes on the side door, my fingers drumming on the table.

Nicholas’s stare had been on Aria all night, like he was peeling her apart, looking for something. Did he know she wasn’t Celeste? Had someone tipped him off?

Marissa, maybe, with her venomous tongue, or Celeste herself, scheming to take back what she thought was hers. But they didn’t know him.

My blood heated, my wolf clawing at my control. Aria was mine. My mate. Not Celeste, not anyone else’s. I’d protect her, no matter what.

The minutes dragged, each one heavier than the last. The music felt too loud, the laughter grating. I forced myself to stay seated, to keep my face blank, but my mind raced.

Where was she? Why had Nicholas left? My fingers tightened on the goblet, the metal creaking under my grip.

Finally, Brian slipped back into the chamber, his face tense as he leaned close, his voice a whisper meant for me alone.

"I found her, Alpha. She’s behind the throne chamber, near the pillars. Looks like she’s trying to cool off."

I nodded, my chest loosening just a fraction. Aria was nervous, out of her depth, pretending to be someone she wasn’t. Of course she needed air.

She wasn’t Celeste, born for the spotlight, raised to be a Luna. She was Aria, the Omega who’d spent her life in the shadows, taking hits from her mother and sister.

I understood why she’d run out here, but it didn’t ease the knot in my gut. Something still felt wrong.

Brian hesitated, his eyes darting away, his teeth catching his lower lip. I turned to him fully, my voice low and hard. "What is it, Brian? Speak."

He shifted, uneasy, his voice dropping even lower. "I hate to say this, Alpha, but... I think I saw Alpha Nicholas heading that way too."

The words hit like a punch. My blood roared, my wolf snarling, ready to tear something apart. I stood, my chair scraping loud against the stone floor, drawing a few curious glances.

I didn’t care. Jealousy burned through me, hot and sharp, mixing with a cold fury. Nicholas, with his smug smirk and knowing eyes, was out there with my Luna.

My mate. I stormed out of the chamber, my boots pounding the floor, Brian hurrying behind me. The side door loomed ahead, and I shoved it open, the cold night air hitting my face like a slap.

The courtyard was dark, lit only by faint torchlight, the shadows deep and thick. I squinted, my eyes adjusting, my senses sharp.

My wolf was on edge, his hackles raised, sniffing for her scent—jasmine and something softer, uniquely Aria.

I moved toward the pillars at the edge of the palace, where Brian said she’d gone. My heart pounded, my fists clenching tight, nails biting into my palms.

If Nicholas had touched her, if he’d so much as looked at her wrong, I’d rip him apart, Alpha or not.

Then I saw them. In the darkness, hidden by a tall pillar, Nicholas stood too close to Aria. His arm was around her waist, her silver gown crumpled in his grip, her body pressed against his.

She looked small, trapped, her eyes wide with something like fear. My vision went red, my wolf roaring, clawing to break free.

Jealousy surged, a fire in my veins, but it was more than that—rage, protectiveness, a need to claim what was mine.

I marched forward, my boots crunching on the gravel, my growl low and dangerous, shaking the air.

"And what’s all this about?" I snarled, my voice booming, my fists clenched so tight my knuckles ached.

Aria flinched, yanking herself free from Nicholas, her face pale in the torchlight. She stepped back, her gown catching on the gravel, her breath shaky.

Nicholas turned to me, his smirk sharp, like he enjoyed the challenge. "Alpha Kael," he said, his voice smooth, taunting.

"Just getting some air, like your Luna here." His dark eyes glinted, daring me to react.

Zeus growled louder, clawing at my control, wanting to rip that smirk off his face. I took a step closer, my boots crunching, standing face-to-face with him.

Nicholas was tall, almost my height, but I was broader, my presence heavier.

I forced my voice to stay calm, though every word was a warning. "I don’t know what you’re up to, Nicholas, but I’d appreciate it if you respect boundaries. She’s my mate, my Luna. Holding her like that could start rumors you won’t like."

I kept my tone even, but my fists stayed tight, my knuckles white. Nicholas was a high-ranking Alpha in the northern region, powerful, cunning.

Starting a fight here, in his pack, would be a mistake. Not yet. Not until I knew what he was playing at.

His smirk didn’t fade, but his eyes narrowed, sizing me up. "Don’t worry, Alpha Kael," he said, his voice dripping with mockery.

"I’ll try my best to stay away. No guarantees, though." He snarled softly, a challenge in his tone.

My blood roared, but I held Zeus back, my jaw tight. I turned to Aria, her eyes wide, locked on me.

I grabbed her wrist, firm but not rough, and pulled her forward. "Let’s go," I said, my voice sharp.

Nicholas’s taunt lingered in the air, but I didn’t look back. I led Aria through the courtyard, her steps quick to match mine, her wrist warm in my grip.

The night air was cold, but my anger burned hotter, jealousy twisting like a knife. She was mine. No one else’s.

We reached our room, the heavy door slamming shut behind us. The silence was consuming, the only sound was our breathing.

I turned to her, my chest heaving, anger and jealousy mixing with something deeper, stronger. Protectiveness. Love.

It was all Aria. And I’d be damned if I let anyone take her from me.

She opened her mouth to speak, her lips trembling, but I cut her off.

"Be quiet," I said, my voice rough, edged with the storm inside me.

I stepped closer, grabbing her chin, my fingers firm but careful. Her eyes widened, searching mine, and I couldn’t hold back.

I kissed her, deep and hard, my lips claiming hers. Our tongues tangled, the taste of her sweet and wild, like the mate bond itself.

My heart pounded, Zeus howling with desire, but it wasn’t just it. It was a desire to prove she was mine, to erase Nicholas’s touch.

She pulled back, gasping, her eyes searching mine, confused and a little scared. "Kael, what...." she started, but I didn’t let her finish.

My hand slid to her neck, possessive but gentle, my thumb brushing her pulse. "I own you, mate," I whispered, my voice low, fierce, but soft with something sweeter.

"You’re mine, and I’m not letting you go." Her breath hitched, her cheeks flushing, and I saw it.

"So please, mind who touches you!"
