Chapter 60: Chapter 60 — Sixty

"It is because I love you and can’t bear to see you hurt." Alexander answered without batting an eyelid.

Serena’s heartbeat quickened, and she darted her eyes, unwilling to look at him.

"You... what... what are you saying?" She stuttered while tucking a strand of her hand behind her ear.

"I’m saying the truth." Alexander took a step close to her, but she took two steps backwards. "I don’t know when it started. Perhaps, it’s because of the crazy things which happened between us."

He paused, then ran a finger through his hair. "I know it sounds crazy, but I can’t think well when you are not in my sight. I love your company and I always feel at peace whenever I see you."

"I have never felt this way for someone before. You’re the first."

Serena was about to say something, but Alexander cut in. "Not even Rhea. You are just... different."

"It seems sudden, just like my previous proposal but my thoughts and feelings are genuine."

"Can’t you give me, give us a chance?" His eyes were filled with pleading as he tried to hold her hands.

Serena was silent for a while as she reminisced about the memories between them. What started as a crazy night evolved into this. But she was sure about one thing... she also had feelings for him..

"Let’s give us a chance." She finally uttered.

Alexander looked at her, blinking. He didn’t expect this answer from her. Just today, he had been hit with various surprises from her.

Bravely, she walked towards him and held his hands. "I don’t know what tomorrow might hold for us. But I don’t want to spend the rest of my life in regrets because I was unable to take a step due to fear."

She paused, then smiled. "Let’s be together." She observed his expression. "But on one condition." She added..

"What is it? I would listen to whatever you have to say." Alexander said excitedly. He would do whatever she wanted. She had finally agreed to be with him. This was the greatest gift for him.

"Our relationship would be a secret." She declared.

"But—"

"Shh." She placed a finger on his lips, cutting him off. "You agreed, didn’t you?"

Alexander’s expression darkened but he could only reluctantly nod his head.

"I’m quitting this job." She stated, and she watched his eyes widen.

"Why?" He asked. He could take anything else, but not her leaving the company.

"My mom’s bakery needs supervision. And besides, it has always been my dream to bake. You will agree, won’t you?"

Her eyelashes fluttered as she stared at him expectantly. These were the only two requests she had.

There were only two reasons for her condition..

One, she didn’t wish to be the subject of rumors daily. Even if he agreed to keep the relationship a secret, that wasn’t possible. Nosy employees would find out, and it could spell trouble for her.

Second, she only wanted to complete her mother’s legacy. Her mother loved baking, and so did she. The operation of the bakery had been closed for a while. She could only revive it and this would make her feel close to her mom.

Alexander stared at her for a while. He understood her worries. "Fine." He could only give in.

Serena beamed. He agreed. "Thank you." She clapped happily, then gave him a peck on his cheeks.

"Alright, you should leave. You have a meeting soon. Don’t hang around. You should prepare." She practically pushed him out of her office.

Something seemed to have changed between them. Serena wasn’t as cautious as she previously was.

Grace sat opposite someone who was wearing a hoodie.

"Mom," the person called out with a smile.

"My son." She said, her voice uncharacteristically soft... extremely rare.

"When would I be out in the open? That old man lost 5% of the shares. I’m miffed." The guy rolled his hands, folding his arms.

Grace exhaled. "Relax. Don’t worry. After he hands over everything to you, then I’ll reveal the truth." She had a cunning smile on her face..

"Mom, do you think Alexander would take all of it without fighting back? He’s dangerous and ruthless." Sam voiced out his worries.

Grace grinned knowingly, then leaned in, whispering. "You don’t have to worry about Alexander. When Thomas wants to name you as his sole heir, I’d kill him." She made a killing gesture, and Sam’s lips curled up.

"Mom, you have everything thought out already." He exclaimed excitedly.

Grace smiled smugly. "Of course." She stretched her hand and held his hands. "I have to secure your future. If I don’t do this, then I would worry about you when I die."

"Mom." Sam cried out. "Don’t talk about death so casually. Your words hurt me." His eyes reflected his thoughts. Although he had evil thoughts, he still genuinely cared about his mother.

Grace chuckled, patting her son’s hand. "Death is an inevitable part of life. We shouldn’t be scared of it. Rather, we should learn to embrace reality."

Sam wanted to say something, but Grace shook her head, indicating that he should say no more.

She sighed internally. The truth was that she had a terminal illness, and she hoped that she could hold on till her son got a better life.

She knew what she was doing when she decided to switch the kids. The truth can only come out when she finally gets what she wants.

"Don’t worry about me. I won’t die... at least not now." Seeing that her dearest son was staring at her intently, she assured him. She hoped he would be able to live on even after her death.

Suddenly, the buzzing of her phone snapped her out of her thoughts.

"Rhea?" She said, uncertainty laced in her tone. "Why is she calling?" She mumbled under her breath before picking the call.

"Grace, you have no idea what happened yesterday." Rhea screamed through the phone.

Grace instinctively frowned when she heard her voice. But recalling that she still needed her, she forced a smile and said. "Rhea, what’s wrong? You sound offended."

"Alexander used a gun. He freaking used a gun! He went against his principles! And he did so because of that b*tch, Serena!"

Grace froze as she bit out, her eyes darkening. "What did you just say?"
