Chapter 572: A familiar’s connection

Coco kept her gaze away from Cleora, her hold on Kairo tight and unrelenting, as Sinclair checked up on his fellow hybrid.

He was in the middle of a mission when he sensed Coco’s distress.

As quickly as he could, he finished the commissioned task and turned into his bird form, flying at high speed to get back to the main city to offer aid to his master.

When he arrived at the porch of their house, he had knocked so hard on the door that he was sure he had almost destroyed the hinges.

If it weren’t Quizen opening the door for him, he would have kicked it open.

One thing led to another, he is now sitting on the living room floor right in front of Coco and examining the unconscious hybrid in her lap.

"He will be fine." The bird hybrid states, withdrawing his hand away from Kairo’s collarbone. "He’s just in shock and all, considering that his master, the previous Cleora, is not inhabiting her body anymore."

"That’s such a relief." Cleora said, breathing out a sigh.

"It should be." Sinclair agreed with a nod of his head. "But since you possessed her body, the mark will break on its own."

"Will break on its own?" Coco chimed in, forcing herself into the conversation. "Please explain.’

"Of course, master." Sinclair chuckled and slowly tucked his fingers back to his glove. "As I have said before, we’re bound to our master for as long as they are alive, but since the original owner of Cleora’s body has passed, their connection will slowly be severed."

"Then, why is it only Kairo who is hurting?" Coco asked, her eyebrows furrowing.

"Because he’s the familiar, master." Sinclair answered, his voice soft as he tried to explain the nature of connection to Coco without alarming her.

"Hybrids like us live for a long time, and assuming that Kairo is younger than me and my husband, he will still be here even after Cleora is gone so his body will adjust to welcome a new master." The hybrid stated, his eyes softening at the sight of Coco’s worried expression.

"But you, my dearest master, will live a long life as well." He hummed out, standing up from his spot on the floor and took a seat on the singular couch across Cleora.

"Outlanders like you and.. Your mother.." Sinclair was a little hesitant to refer to Cleora as Coco’s mother because the original owner was an acquaintance of his; the sight of her walking and looking quite healthy in Coco’s living room brought a mix feeling.

"Well, people with your circumstances tend to live as long as hybrids." The bird hybrid stated, shrugging his shoulders.

"What is that supposed to mean?" Coco asked, still feeling a little lost.

"It means that you will love through a millenia." Sinclair answered, going straight to the point because he remembered how hard headed the person he was talking to. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

"A millenia?!" Coco exclaimed, her face draining of color. "That’s a long time!"

"I know, master." Sinclair said, smiling sadly at Coco. "Outlanders and hybrids are almost alike.. That’s why the hybrids are advised to not get a master unless they have a strong heart."

Coco pursed her lips, her gaze drifting to the floor. "Does this mean that I will live even after Zaque and others pass away?"

The thought of living through the pain of losing her husbands gnawed at her, her heart hammering and breaking into pieces just by imagining life without the four of them.

I can’t bear it. Coco swallowed the lump in her throat and bit down a sob.

Cleora and Sinclair both watched as Coco’s face showed what she was feeling, her eyes welled up with tears and her arms around a sleeping Kairo tightened, pulling him impossibly close to her body.

Cleora sighed. "My dear, thinking about what will happen will only hurt you more."

Coco tore her eyes away from the floor and looked at Cleora, her vision blurry with unshed tears. "Mama.. I-I’m sorry for what I did earlier.. I didn’t mean to."

"It’s fine." Cleora giggled and waved a hand dismissively. "It just made me happy that you have found people you love."

"I’m really sorry." Coco apologized, her voice dripping with remorse and sincerity, as she sniffled, not wanting the tears escape her eyes. "That was really disrespectful of me.."

"It’s really fine, Coco." Cleora smiled at her child. "At least we both know that you will protect your husband from the people who are causing them pain, even if those people include your mother."

Coco could only let out another sniffle, nodding her head.

Sinclair raised an eyebrow and turned to Coco. "Master.. I have been meaning to ask this since earlier, but why aren’t you correcting your mother’s term when referring to Kairo?"

"What do you mean?" Cleora and Coco asked at the same time, causing Sinclair’s lips to twitch in amusement.

"Well, first of all, my dearest master only has four mediators as her husbands." The hybrid said and turned to Cleora, addressing her directly. "Second, those four husbands are currently inside the kitchen."

As Coco listened to Sinclair, she realized what he was trying to say.

"Last, but not least, Kairo is someone who is only staying with them and isn’t engaged in any kind of relationship with my master." Sinclair stated, smiling. "Except for friendships, I assume."

Cleora gasped, her eyes snapping back to her daughter to apologize, but she stopped when she saw Coco’s face as red as tomato.

"Oh." The mother blinked, a smile emerging in her face. "I see how it is."

She turned back to Sinclair and giggled. "I may not be that educated about how this world works in terms of relationships, except for the basics, but it seems that I can be assured when it comes to my daughter entering a healthy relationship."

"I-I will put Kairo to bed.." Coco mumbled, standing up and rushing to exit the room.
