Chapter 571: Kairo’s master

Kairo wasn’t sure what was happening.

Who is this woman before him? Why is he acting like this? Why is he gasping for air just at the mere sight of a stranger?

His heart is tearing apart, his lungs constricted with wires and squeezing so tight he could barely breathe— it was as if he was going under execution that he didn’t deserve.

Before he knew it, his view got obscured by someone’s chest and the scent the person emit helped calm his painfully beating heart.

"Kairo? Kairo? Hey, hey, hey." Coco called, her arms wrapping around him and her shifting to the third husband. "What happened to him? Why is he like this?"

"I don’t know." Alhai answered, his eyebrows furrowed and eyes flickering with worry. "He just started hyperventilating."

Coco felt Kairo panting, gasping desperately for air and buried his face into her breasts, but it seems like it wasn’t enough for him because he raised his head and buried his nose into her neck, inhaling sharply.

"It hurts, it hurts, it hurts.." Kairo mumbled, his voice strained and body trembling.

Just then, something glowing caught Coco’s attention and caused her eyes to snap down to Kairo’s neck, her gaze gluing themselves onto the mark on his collarbone.

"Is your familiar mark aching?" Coco asked, raising a hand and brushing her fingertips onto the mark.

Kairo groaned, whimpering and pushing his face further into her neck, as if silently begging to make the pain stop.

"Fuck, I don’t know what to do." Coco mumbled, her heart breaking slightly at the sight of Kairo’s weakened state, barely keeping himself upright and if it wasn’t for Coco holding him, he would have collapsed on the floor by now.

"Coco?" Cleora called, her voice soft and cautious as she watched everything from the couch. "Is your husband in pain? Should I heal him?"

Coco perked up in an instant, eyes wide. She turned around and practically swept Kairo off his feet, rushing inside the living room and rounding the couch to get to her mother.

"Oh my goodness, mama! I completely forgot that you can heal people!" Coco exclaimed, a look of relief crossing her features.

Cleora stood up from the couch and laid the decorative pillow by the armrest, letting it lean on it and patting it. "It’s fine, but lay your darling down so I can take a look at him."

"Okay, okay." Coco said and scrambled to her knees, placing Kairo down onto the couch.

"N-No.. Don’t leave m-me.." Kairo groaned, his hand gripping Coco’s sleeve as tightly as he could, his eyes barely fluttering open to look and beg Coco.

Cleora huffed. "You heard him, Coco. Stay seated there while I do my thing."

Coco’s eyebrows furrowed and rested her hand on top of Kairo’s, gently ushering to loosen his hold so she could interlock her fingers with his. "I’m not planning to go anywhere else, mama."

Cleora’s eyes softened and a smile cracked through her features. "That’s my girl."

The older woman teared her gaze away from her daughter’s face and focused on the mediator on the couch, her hand hovering over his head and pressing her palm down to check his temperature.

At the same time, her other hand had settled on top of Kairo’s stomach and slowly, the dark, gooey thing crawled under her palm and started wriggling its way across his upper body.

The sight of the familiar disgusting slime creature sent goosebumps all over Coco’s arms and steeled herself to stay beside Kairo.

While watching Cleora do her own thing, Coco’s mind wanders off to the pulsating mark.

Her eyes stayed glued onto Kairo’s mark, her hand on his tightening slightly as she tried to shake off the nagging feeling that settled on her shoulders.

There was something amiss.

Kairo has never shown this kind of reaction and the mark had never caused a problem before. What could be different now? What caused it to bring pain to Kairo?

Numerous questions flooded Coco’s mind and because of it, her eyes couldn’t help, but wander.

Strangely, her gaze landed on Cleora’s sleeves that were hanging loosely by her elbow and something glowing underneath the fabric caught her attention.

Coco’s free hand moved before she could think about her action and grabbed Cleora’s sleeves, which took the woman by surprise and caused her to flinch, but she couldn’t find it in herself to scold Coco when she needed to focus on her daughter’s husband.

Coco yanked Cleora’s sleeve up and the sight before her made her eyes go wide.

[Hidden Quest {2} complete! Receiving rewards..]

The flowing thing under Cleora’s sleeve was the same mark that Kairo has on his collarbone, but unlike him, the woman doesn’t seem like she was in pain.

Coco’s breath hitched, her mind crowded with scenarios that included her mother and Kairo.

Without thinking, Coco had snatched Cleora’s hands away from Kairo’s body, causing the woman to gasp, her heart beating fast as she watched her daughter scooped the man to her arms.

"W-What’s wrong?" Cleora asked, raising her hands in the air to surrender.

She could tell that Coco is on her guard and the way she held her husband into arm says that she’s protecting him from her, but why does she look hurt and sad?

"What’s wrong, Coco?" Cleora repeated the question, her voice low and soft, afraid that she would make her daughter run away from her.

"Mama.." Coco croaked out, swallowing the lump in her throat as she tightened her arms around Kairo, inhaling sharply. "You’re.. You’re Kairo’s master, aren’t you?"

"Master?" Cleora echoed, blinking owlishly. "What are you about, my love? I have never seen that child before."

"But you bore the same as him!" Coco exclaimed, her eyes narrowing at Cleora. "And I cleared the quest that told me to look for his master, which means that makes you his master."

"No, no, no, maybe the original Cleora knows him, but me? I don’t know him!" The older woman reasoned.
