Chapter 244: A raven’s pair quest

Alithe only gave a curt nod towards the vice captain, his expression switching from his condescending one to a serious one.

"We’re heading out!" He announced and almost immediately, the guards to fall into step, and they obeyed the guild master without hesitation.

After what Alithe told her, she didn’t want to walk with him anymore, but she’s the one who will be leading the group across the forest so she had no choice, but to fall into step beside him, her face betraying none of the turmoil she was feeling inside.

The group of guards followed them out of the village gates and towards the south, the trees of the forest slowly looming in front of them.

The terrain grew more rugged over time as they moved further into the forest, the ground covered with loose rocks and roots, but the guards moved silently, their movements smooth and efficient as they carefully made their way through the forest. novelbuddy-cσ๓

The light filtering through the trees was dim, the shadows long and dark as they moved down the path.

Usually, at this time, even if someone was with Coco, Lala would be talking her ears off just to entertain her, but because Alithe told her about his ability, that he can hear the garden fairy, Lala had forced herself to stay quiet since.

Damn this hybrid. Coco cursed the raven hybrid beside her, her lips pursing into a straight line.

Having no choice, Coco brought out the map that the village chief had given her, her attention turning to the document instead of the man beside her.

She unrolled it and began to study the map, her eyes scanning the parchment as she tried to focus on something other than her own thoughts, her gaze moving over the lines and markings on the paper.

She ignored Alithe’s gaze, her focus fixed on the map as she navigated the group through the forest.

As they walked, the only sound was the crunch of rocks and twigs breaking under their feet, and the sound of the wind rustling the leaves above.

The guards were a silent presence behind her, their bodies tense and their gazes fixed on the path ahead.

They made it obvious that they were a tight-knit group, their training clear in the way they moved as one unit, flanking Coco on either side and sweeping the area for any sign of danger.

Despite the dread she was feeling, Coco couldn’t help, but find the journey peaceful, the quiet and the familiar forest soothing her nerves.

It was a different story for the guards that were following her though.

Some of them had expressions of respect and admiration, their gazes fixed on Coco as they followed her lead— they changed their opinions of her after they saw her being friendly with the village chief.

Before they left the village hall to go to the village inn, Chief Salamandara herself had come out and greeted them, then she went ahead and said something to Coco Hughes, stalking her claims and making it clear that Coco is someone important to her.

How could they possibly go against the village chief of the village in the middle of a forest that is swarmed with monsters?

Now, just because some of them had changed their opinions of Coco, there are still others who looked uncertain, their expressions tense and their eyes wary as they looked around the forest.

There were a few who looked downright disdainful, their faces set in hard lines, and their eyes fixed on the woman who’s leading all of them through the forest, their gaze narrowed into a glare with skepticism oozing in every line of their body.

Still, despite their differences, they all followed her silently, their footfalls as soundless as possible, and their movements in sync.

Half way through their journey, Coco summoned the quest scroll before her and forced it to the side so it wouldn’t block her vision, her eyes sweeping across the written letters on the paper.

As she walked, Coco kept glancing at the scroll that was hovering in front of her, invisible to all, but her.

She would look at the scroll for a moment and read the letters over and over again, then she would switch her gaze to the map, checking their location and course.

Every now and then, she would look up and look ahead, her gaze focusing on the path in front of them.

She did all of this quickly, never slowing down or hesitating, her attention divided between the three sources of information.

Then, Coco felt a chill run down her spine.

They had been walking for a while now and Coco could sense something was wrong so she halted abruptly in her tracks.

Her sudden stop alerted the guards behind her and the raven hybrid beside her, they all quickly stopped in their tracks, their bodies tense and their hands landing on the handle of their weapons.

Alithe moved towards her, his eyes fixed on Coco, his expression a mix of confusion and concern as he asked with a slightly loud voice. "What’s wrong?"

Coco stood still, her eyebrows furrowed in suspicion.

Her attention was fixed solely on the floating quest scroll in front of her, her eyes reading the name farming rabbits over and over again.

"Something is weird." Coco spoke up and shifted her gaze down to the map, a sense of dread pooling on the bottom of her stomach, "We’ll take a quick break here. I have to scout the area."

"Scout?" The vice captain asked.

Coco rolled the map and shoved it inside of her bag, approaching a tree.

Then, the vice captain got answered as Coco jumped into a nearby tree branch, her movements were fluid and graceful, her body moving lithely as she grabbed onto a thick branch and swung herself up.

The guards watched in astonishment as she settled onto the branch, perched there like a bird of prey.

"Yeah, so keep an eye out while I do so."
