Chapter 233: Getting the permit [3]

"Hold on." Coco interrupted the conversation between Alithe and the village chief, her eyebrows furrowed.

"What is he saying— no, what are you saying, chief? What are you talking about not forcing me into something I don’t want to do?" She turned her head to look at Chief Salamandara, a questioning look shot in her direction.

Chief Salamandara cleared her throat and sat upright in her chair. "Well.. Just as I have said.. Alithe is one of my trusted companions who can help us."

"Help us?" Coco inquired, urging the village chief to elaborate.

"Guess what?! We don’t care what kind of important companion he is! He’s a creep!" The garden fairy exclaimed, stomping her foot on Coco’s head.

She had flown by Coco’s head while Coco was in the middle of conversation with the village chief, then she sat herself down comfortably on Coco’s hair before Coco could start writing her name and signature on the logbook.

So when the village chief suddenly said things about her conversation with the strange hybrid, Coco stood up and started berating Chief Salamandara.

Coco had grown used to it so she just chose to ignore Lala’s outburst like it was her second nature.

On the other hand, Lala wouldn’t stop puffing her chest out and pointing an accusatory finger towards the village chief, her eyebrows furrowed and eyes squinted into a menacing glare.

Of course, like usual, the hybrid behind the office desk doesn’t know of Lala’s existence so she didn’t hear anything the garden fairy said.

"Yes, help us." Chief Salamandara stated, a small smile playing in the corner of her lips.

"What can he do then?" Coco raised an eyebrow, turning her back on the hybrid and focusing her attention on the village chief inside of asking the man himself.

"First of all, getting your permit as early as today was because of him." The village said as she nudged her head towards the other hybrid’s direction, "He’s in charge of those who can come in and out of the main city so I asked him to let you in without question."

"Of course, that does not mean I didn’t ask for compensation —" The hybrid said, interjecting through the explanation.

Ding!

At the same time, the familiar chime of the scroll’s arrival echoed at the back of Coco’s head and made her flinch on her spot, her eyes snapping at the piece of paper’s appearance.

Coco stared unblinkingly at the strange quest in front of her, her expression incredulous— eyes wide in disbelief and disdain.

She couldn’t believe what she was reading.

The quest was clearly absurd, outlandish to the point of being ridiculous and even dangerous.

Farming rabbits? The one that Renaldo warned me about is skin people alive? The weaker, but smarter monsters? Coco thought, a mixture of shock and scowl crossed her face, her mouth dropping open slightly

Her eyes fluttered as she read it over again, her disbelief growing with each word and she couldn’t understand how anyone could even consider trying to complete it.

How in the world was she going to complete this task?

"— I asked the Salamandara to lend me one of her hunters to help me with a mission I have and she gave me your name." Alithe finished his sentence with a glare, clearly not pleased with the village chief’s words.

"I said that I will ask her first before agreeing." Chief Salamandara was quick to protect her name with a sharp glare of her own, "Coco Hughes is not someone I will force into something as dangerous as this, Alithe. She’s not licensed yet and just started last month."

"But she’s the strongest one among your critters, right?" Alithe asked, raising an eyebrow.

"No."

"Yes."

Chief Salamandara and Coco answered at the same time, and the two of them immediately snapped their attention to each other in a flash.

"I’m not strong." Coco disagreed with the village chief’s words.

"You are." Chief Salamandara insisted with a smile, "The hunters I’ve given a permit to enter the main city couldn’t even hunt down monsters in just three days, let alone on a daily basis.. But you? You do it every single day."

"That’s only because the monsters I’ve killed so far are weaker than me and much more simple minded than I am!" Coco exclaimed, stopping herself from revealing too much information.

"There’s monster hunters who call their game ’weak’ or ’simple minded’ except you." Alithe spoke up, an underlying tone in his voice.

Oh, shit.. Coco thought, her face losing color as a sense of dread pooled at the bottom of her stomach.

"That’s what I’m saying." Chief Salamandara agreed with Alithe’s statement and smiled brightly, "The aspiring hunters I released into the main city don’t say things such as ’weak’ and ’simple minded’ because the monsters are strong."

"But then again, if Coco Hughes doesn’t want to do it, I won’t force her." Chief Salamandara chuckled out, darting her eyes towards Alithe.

"You can’t back out with your part of the bargain." Alithe growled as he stood up from his seat.

"I didn’t do such a thing—"

"Fine!" Coco exclaimed and slammed her hand down on the village chief’s desk, "I’ll do whatever you want me to do, but you have to promise me that you’ll help me settle inside the main city!"

"Okay." Alithe didn’t waste any time to secure the bag, "You get your permit and I get my pair back, doesn’t that sound a fair deal?"
