National Guardian's Gone and We're Done-Chapter 62: However, I Received a Letter From a Mysterious Person
Agarwood City.
Dai Ju sat at her desk, her hands gently tracing the lines on a map of Agarwood City’s defenses.
Recently, the Great Jing Empire had been plunged into unprecedented turmoil. The invasion of Evil Spirits spread like a plague; two cities had already been reduced to ruins under their demonic claws, and countless lives had been lost.
As the guardian of this city, Dai Ju shouldered a heavy responsibility.
Although the taint of an Evil Spirit’s corruption was already buried within her, her dedication to her duty had never wavered.
She lowered her head slightly, a sliver of wishful thinking crossing her mind. ’Maybe I can hide this secret forever and continue to protect this city.’
Just as she was lost in thought, a flurry of hurried footsteps sounded from outside the door.
The door was then flung open with a loud BANG, and Gao Yimin appeared in the doorway.
Her face was a mask of terror and anxiety, as if some catastrophe was about to occur.
Dai Ju looked up, her gaze meeting Gao Yimin’s. She felt an unprecedented sense of urgency. "Weren’t you leading a patrol? Why are you in such a panic? Did something happen?"
Gao Yimin tried to compose herself, but her voice still trembled. "Dai Ju, we... we’ve been exposed.
The news about our deal with the Evil Spirit has spread throughout the entire Great Jing Empire. Even foreign media outlets are reporting on it.
They specifically pointed out that the ones involved in the deal were you and I, from the Time Girl Group."
Hearing this, Dai Ju’s hand trembled, and the defense map slipped from her grasp, falling to the floor.
But she paid it no mind. She stood and walked over to Gao Yimin, asking nervously, "Is what you’re saying true? This... how is this possible? How could we have been discovered?"
Gao Yimin shook her head with a bitter smile. "It’s absolutely true.
When we were discussing it in the tent, a reporter was secretly hiding outside.
We were so distracted at the time that we didn’t notice a thing!
He overheard our conversation and filmed the entire thing through a gap in the tent.
Now, that evidence has been made public. Her Majesty the Queen is furious and has already sent people to investigate."
Dai Ju’s face instantly turned as white as a sheet.
She never could have imagined that the secret she had tried so hard to hide would be exposed in such a way.
Gao Yimin looked up, a wild and desperate light glinting in her eyes. "What... what’s going to happen to us?"
The air seemed to freeze, heavy and oppressive.
Flames of resentment burned in Dai Ju’s eyes. She stared furiously at Gao Yimin and said decisively, "This is all your fault! I’m going to Her Majesty the Queen myself to explain everything and reveal the truth."
The rage in Dai Ju’s heart was hard to quell.
If it weren’t for Gao Yimin, she never would have ended up in this situation.
Choosing to share responsibility for Agarwood City with Gao Yimin had been a matter of security; after all, they were of the same kind now, sharing the same secret.
Yet, despite their daily caution, the secret had still been unavoidably exposed for everyone in the Great Jing Empire to see.
Dai Ju wasn’t surprised by Her Majesty the Queen’s anger.
’If I were the Queen,’ she thought, putting herself in the other’s shoes, ’I would be even more furious in the face of such betrayal and deception.’
Gao Yimin looked at Dai Ju’s furious expression, the corner of her mouth curling into a cold sneer.
She shook her head and said slowly, "Explain everything to Her Majesty the Queen?
Dai Ju, do you really think that will change anything?
When the throne and power are involved, do you think Her Majesty the Queen will care about old loyalties?
All she needs is a chicken."
"A chicken?"
Dai Ju was confused, trying to find the meaning in Gao Yimin’s words.
Gao Yimin nodded and continued to explain, "Yes, a chicken. A chicken to be killed to scare the monkeys.
The Great Jing Empire is currently riddled with problems, facing issues at every turn.
Xiao Cangqing has vanished without a trace, and the throne itself is unstable.
Her Majesty the Queen needs someone to take the fall for all of this, and you and I are very likely the chickens she’ll choose.
Our families, relatives, and friends will all be implicated because of us."
Dai Ju’s heart sank. She understood that what Gao Yimin was saying wasn’t just fearmongering.
In this vortex of power struggles, it was impossible to remain unscathed.
She sank helplessly back onto the sofa, her hands clenched into tight fists.
Gao Yimin seemed to sense Dai Ju’s despair. "However, I received a letter from a mysterious person.
This person told me that if we’re willing to follow their orders and join the organization behind them, they’re willing to lend us a hand and help us through this crisis."
As she spoke, Gao Yimin walked to the door, glanced around to make sure no one was eavesdropping, then shut it again.
She mysteriously pulled a letter from her pocket and placed it on the desk.
Then, she carefully unfolded the letter, showing its contents to Dai Ju.
Dai Ju’s gaze slowly lifted from the letter. "You actually believe this nonsense?"
She scoffed at the mysterious organization Gao Yimin mentioned.
But Gao Yimin was unfazed. "Of course they know we won’t trust them easily, but they did mention they’d give us proof to convince us of their sincerity.
The investigators sent by Her Majesty the Queen will arrive in Agarwood City in three days.
And these mysterious people promised to deliver evidence sufficient to make us believe them before the investigators arrive."
"Evidence? What kind of evidence?"
Dai Ju asked curiously. Although she was still doubtful, Gao Yimin’s words had piqued her curiosity.
Gao Yimin shook her head, indicating she didn’t know either. "They didn’t specify what the evidence is, only that it would be a surprise.
But regardless, we need to be prepared.
If their so-called surprise isn’t to our satisfaction, then our only option is to run."
"Run?" Dai Ju frowned. That choice felt too heavy for her.
"Yes, run."
Gao Yimin nodded and continued, "I’m already using my connections to move my family.
With our strength, even if we flee overseas, we can find a place to settle down and live comfortably."
Dai Ju was silent for a moment before finally lowering her head, her voice filled with agitation. "Let me think about it."
...
On a vast, boundless plain, the scorching sun baked the earth, making even the air seem to warp from the heat. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
In this searing, scorching desert, a lone head was moving with great difficulty.
It was the head of Xiao Cangqing. Two legs had sprouted from his severed neck, nurtured by a mass of rotting flesh.
The Evil Spirit’s power within Xiao Cangqing had been all but burned away, leaving only a severely wounded, decaying man.
This man had fallen into a deep slumber, pinning his last hopes on Xiao Cangqing’s head.
’I can’t get out... I’m probably going to die here...’
At this moment, however, Xiao Cangqing was filled with despair.
He had lost his way in this desert. Before and behind him was only endless desolation, without a single sign of life.
His ’body’ had no strength left. Even if a living person were standing right in front of him,
he wouldn’t have enough power to attack and kill them, let alone devour them.
Just as Xiao Cangqing was about to give up, a set of footsteps suddenly approached from behind.
Before he could turn to look, a pair of hands reached out and picked him up.
