Chapter 158: Risk

Creak!

In the suburbs of Crestfall City, a family dinner had ended. Two figures emerged from the front door while a pair bid them farewell.

"Now, you remember to take care of yourselves, okay? Be sure to eat and get enough sleep."

"Yes, Ma. I promise to make sure Elian doesn’t overdo it."

Susan Reed suddenly embraced Bianca in her arms as she whispered.

"Don’t forget to do the same for yourself too, dear, okay? Elian will break if anything happens to you."

Bianca, although surprised, affectionately returned the embrace, "Yes, mother-in-law. I promise."

Beside them, Tom and Elian also hugged. Tom patted his son’s back as he gave his own farewell.

"Give me hell, if you got questions you know where we will be."

"Yeah, thanks, Dad. I will. Next time we come, we will bring Bianca’s family with us."

"That’s fine; the Months are quite a dependable bunch."

Susan quickly darted between them like a viper and hugged Elian. Bianca held the edge of her dress and curtsied to Tom Reed.

"Father-in-law, we will be going now."

"Yeah, be careful, Bianca. Keep Elian out of trouble for me, will you?"

The witch giggled at the absurdity of her task. "I will try my best."

When Susan finally let go of Elian, her face was on the verge of tears. "My baby is all grown up and is getting married. Time flies by so fast..."

Elian held his mother’s hands and declared in a soft tone.

"Don’t worry, Ma. I plan to have lots of kids with Bianca. We will let them loose here so much you will grow sick of them."

At his promise, Susan Reed made a slight smile. "I would like that. But be sure to take Bianca’s health into account. Giving birth is hard on the body."

"Don’t worry. Bianca is one strong woman. That’s why I fell for her. She can handle a dozen easy."

Bianca came over flushed red and slapped Elian in the arm, "Again with that nonsense! I am fine with two, maybe even five, but twelve? Are you crazy? Even large dog breeds only give birth to ten at most!"

Elian playfully tried to shield himself as he retorted, "But they do ten in one sitting. They also do multiple batches throughout their lives, do you think I will allow such a waste with your beauty? "

"Wha..."

In one smooth motion, Elian ducked and wrapped his arm around Bianca’s waist. "Ma, Dad, look at my wife, isn’t she gorgeous?" he shamelessly declared in a voice the entire neighborhood would hear.

"Of course she is!" "Yeah, like an angel."

"Then, shouldn’t I make sure she leaves as many descendants as possible? Look at this face! Isn’t it a crime to only give two or three chances for such beauty to be passed on?"

"Stop it! What the heck are you..."

Both Tom and Susan Reed turned to each other before nodding in agreement, "Yes. That is right."

Bianca, who heard the family praise her to the heavens, lowered her head in embarrassment. Unaccustomed to such praise, she tugged her ponytail in front of her face, hiding her smile.

Enamored by his lover’s cute meltdown, Elian picked her up in a bridal carry and shouted to his parents, "Bye Ma, Dad! We are going now. We’ll keep in touch."

Afterward, Elian flexed the muscles in his legs and caused the ground to rupture. In the next moment, he vaulted away like a human-sized flea. With high-altitude, high-speed jumps, Elian made his way back to the business district of Crestfall.

When it was just the two of them, Bianca couldn’t help herself and began to playfully hit Elian’s chest. "That was so embarrassing! I forbid you from saying such things when others are present!"

The Tyrant’s face twisted into a mischievous grin, "Ho? So it’s fine if there are only the two of us?"

Taken aback, Bianca’s mind drew a blank, "I don’t... I mean... ah whatever! Yes! It’s fine when it’s just the two of us!"

"You like it when I lavish you with praise?"

"Oh, of course I do! Who wouldn’t want to be serenaded by the sweet nothings of the one they love? Anyone who says they don’t is a liar!"

Just then, a soft melody began to play from Elian’s trench coat. He quickly leapt up to the nearest roof and lowered Bianca to the ground. Fishing out his new smartphone, he answered the video call.

The screen displayed a white-haired woman with eerily black eyes. She was as pale as snow but was as beautiful as Bianca, albeit with some differences.

"Mom?"

"Oh hi, Bianca! How did your dinner with the Reeds go? Did you make the omelets we practiced? What did Susan say?" the woman waved energetically.

"She said it was passable. I mixed up sugar and salt. So my omelet was sweeter than cake. But enough about that, why are you calling Elian? I thought you were looking for..."

"That was a lie," Elian abruptly answered.

"Huh? A lie? Then where has Mom gone?"

Elian gestured to the screen with his eyes and waited for Silent to speak.

"I found them. Using Tessa’s signature works only for weaklings. They knew immediately the moment I walked in."

"I guess that can’t be helped. Casualties?"

"I lost ten. They weren’t strong, but they have a lot of tricks."

The Tyrant’s hands and teeth clenched in anger. He knew there was a risk, but that number was quite overwhelming. Silent’s report of losing ten Weapons meant, ten Beowolves had their soul cores shattered.

It was the first deaths in the faction.

"Wait? What is going on? Elian? Mom? What do you mean you lost ten?"

Neither Elian nor Silent answered. Instead, Elian asked a different question.

"The culprits?"

"Ran away. They had artifacts that teleported them upon a fatal blow."

"Okay. When will you return?"

"I should be back in Crestfall in two days," Silent answered after a short pause.

"Got it. See you then. Excellent work, mother-in-law. I’ll explain to Bianca."

He then ended the call. Bianca crossed her arms, her face twisted in frustration and rage. The surrounding temperature was so low water would freeze.

"So is this how we are now, Elian? I am just some outsider who doesn’t even deserve to know?"

Rather than answer Bianca’s complaints, Elian shed light on the call.

"The Big Three had an emergency summit this morning. We found out because Yearns was keeping tabs on Marcus Steel. Mother-in-law went there masquerading as Ms. Potts. She intended to assassinate them all, the Big Three leaders, in one swoop."

The more Bianca heard, the more agitated she became. "AND YOU LET HER? ELIAN, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU? YOU LET MY MOTHER GO ON SUCH A DANGEROUS MISSION ALONE?" Bianca screamed as tears fell from her eyes.

Elian didn’t try to defend himself and just lowered his head, "I am sorry Bianca, mother-in-law asked me to keep it a secret from you. She knew the risks but told me she would go no matter what. And if I told you or father-in-law she would go rogue."

"WHAT? Why? I know the Beowolves are powerful, but what if she gets hurt, captured, or killed? Wait! Then the ten she lost?"

"Ten assassination-type Beowolves. Your mother had to board a helicopter; she could only bring fifty of them in humanoid form. The Tyrant Candidates must have found some way to kill them even with all our precautions."

Bianca grew angrier and grabbed Elian by his collar and shook him. "YOU KNEW? AND YOU DIDN’T TELL ME! HOW COULD YOU?! I CAN’T LOSE HER, ELIAN! I FINALLY HAVE A FAMILY! I WILL NOT LOSE IT ALL FOR THESE BASTARDS!"

Seeing her tears, Elian wrapped his arms around Bianca and brushed her back.

"I am sorry for not telling you earlier, Bianca; I really am. Your mother is fine. She is on her way back. Everything is fine."

"I am so scared. I can’t. I can’t lose her, Elian... I just can’t. You know that. You must have! Why did you let her go? Why? Why didn’t you stop her from doing something so dangerous? What if she doesn’t come home the next time?!"

Elian clenched his jaw as he remembered the short discussion he had with Silent.

It happened when Bianca was playing with Fluffy and Burny. Silent slipped in, carrying a Whiteline document.

"Mother-in-law? What is..."

"I found them, Son-in-law. You were right; using the human Breakers as bait worked. They are meeting in three days. I will use Marcus to infiltrate and assassinate them."

Elian furrowed his eyebrows and went over the document. It was a transcript of a phone call of Marcus Steel and an unknown third party. He was asked to meet some people. Yearns verified that the nature of the meeting was a summit with the Big Three.

"Great. We can plan an assault in that time. We will overwhelm them and..."

"I am going alone... Son-in-law," Silent declared with no room for objection.

"I can’t let you do that, mother-in-law. You know how Bianca is. She would never allow it. At least take Fluffy or Father-in-law..."

"No. I am going alone. You are going to keep it a secret from her until the task is done."

Elian brushed his hair back in frustration, "Why the hell are you being so obstinate, mother-in-law? I allowed your rampage thinking you should cool down, but you only grew more blood drunk. I cannot let you go. It’s too dangerous..."

"Remember what I told you before, Elian Reed. A Tyrant may build a shelter strong enough for every soul... but not every soul will choose to live under it," Silent snarled. "I may be a Weapon but I am of Fralhame. This is my freedom and my consequence."

Sigh. Fralhame really has troublesome customs.

The reason Elian couldn’t stop her was that it was Silent’s decision. If he did, she would be safe, but their relationship would have broken beyond repair. For this same reason, Silent kept it a secret from Bastion and Fluffy.

At Bianca’s question, Elian could only embrace her tighter. Relationships, in particular, were not easy to navigate no matter how good one was at fighting.
