Chapter 155: Bleeding Blood Owl

Far away from the ruined human city where the sky still trembled under the weight of Cain’s power, another struggle continued beneath the deep night.

The forest where the Moonshade family had been thrown through the dimensional tear had grown quiet after the first violent clash, yet that quiet did not bring comfort. The trees stood tall and dark beneath the moonlight while broken branches and shattered earth told the story of the battle that had already taken place.

At the center of that torn clearing stood the blood owl.

The enormous creature spread its wings wide as if claiming the forest itself. Its feathers were dark and thick like blades carved from crimson metal, and the glow inside its eyes burned like coals buried deep inside a furnace.

Across from it stood the two sorcerers.

Or rather one standing and one barely standing.

The younger sorcerer who had joined the fight earlier looked furious. His robes had been torn in several places from the earlier clash with the owl, yet his pride burned hotter than the pain running through his body.

He refused to accept what had happened.

A blood beast.

Just a beast.

And yet every spell he had thrown so far had failed to crush it.

His teeth clenched as he raised his staff again.

"I refuse to believe this."

His voice shook with anger and disbelief.

"It’s just a beast."

Mana gathered around his hands once more.

The older sorcerer beside him remained crouched behind a shimmering bubble shield that covered the two of them like a transparent dome. His breathing sounded rough and uneven. Blood had dried along one side of his face and his robe hung loose where the owl’s earlier strike had nearly torn it apart.

Even so he forced the shield to remain stable.

"Be careful," he warned weakly.

"That thing isn’t normal."

The younger sorcerer ignored him.

"Enough excuses."

He raised his staff high above his head.

"Arc Flame!"

A burst of bright orange fire erupted from the crystal at the tip of his staff and shot forward like a raging comet.

The flames struck the owl directly.

BOOM.

The explosion lit the forest with bright orange light.

Yet when the smoke cleared the blood owl still stood there.

Its wings beat slowly once.

Then it took a step forward.

The younger sorcerer froze for half a second.

"...Still standing?"

The owl moved again.

Another slow step.

The young mage felt anger crawl through his chest.

"Fine."

He slammed the end of his staff against the ground.

"Then I’ll keep attacking until you fall!"

Another spell formed.

"Lightning burst!"

A bolt of white lightning shot from his staff and crashed into the owl’s chest. Sparks scattered across the creature’s body and the thunderclap echoed across the forest.

But the owl kept coming.

One step.

Then another.

The ground cracked beneath its claws as it advanced.

The younger sorcerer’s breathing grew heavier.

"Why won’t you fall?!"

He fired another spell.

Then another.

Then another.

Fire.

Wind.

Lightning.

The clearing flashed again and again as spell after spell slammed into the owl’s body. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

Yet each time the smoke cleared the creature stood there still moving forward.

Slow.

Relentless.

The younger sorcerer felt sweat forming along his temples.

"This makes no sense..."

He launched another fire blast.

BOOM.

Still the owl moved.

Every step crushed the ground beneath its talons.

Every flap of its wings sent gusts of wind rolling across the clearing.

The sorcerer gritted his teeth.

"I won’t lose to a beast!"

He unleashed more magic.

But the more spells he cast, the closer the owl came.

It felt as though his attacks were nothing more than sparks falling on a mountain.

Behind him the injured sorcerer struggled to keep the shield stable.

His arms trembled from the effort.

But then something caught his attention.

A dark drop slid down one of the owl’s feathers.

He blinked.

"...Wait."

Another drop followed.

The injured sorcerer leaned forward slightly.

"...Is that... blood?"

His eyes widened.

"Yes!"

He pointed toward the creature.

"It’s bleeding!"

The younger sorcerer paused for a moment.

"What?"

"Look!"

The injured sorcerer’s voice suddenly filled with excitement.

"We can kill it!"

He laughed weakly.

"It’s hurting!"

"It’s hurting!"

The younger sorcerer quickly looked again.

Sure enough several feathers along the owl’s side had been cracked open by the repeated blasts of magic.

Dark red blood dripped slowly down its wing.

The young mage’s eyes lit up.

"I see it now."

A wide grin stretched across his face.

"So you’re not invincible after all."

He raised his staff again.

"Good."

"Let’s blast this feathered beast off the face of this forest!"

Mana exploded around him once more.

The spells that followed came faster than before.

Fireballs roared through the air.

Wind blades screamed as they sliced forward.

Bolts of lightning hammered the owl again and again.

Each explosion shook the ground.

The creature staggered slightly under the repeated attacks.

Feathers broke away.

Blood splashed across the dirt.

The sorcerer laughed wildly.

"Yes!"

"That’s it!"

He hurled another spell.

BOOM.

Another wound opened along the owl’s wing.

The injured sorcerer behind the shield shouted with excitement.

"Keep going!"

"It’s working!"

The younger mage pushed more mana into his staff.

"I won’t stop!"

He unleashed a barrage of spells one after another.

The clearing turned into a storm of magic.

The owl’s feathers tore apart under the repeated blasts.

Blood splattered across the ground.

Its wings trembled as it struggled to remain standing.

Yet even while injured the creature continued moving forward.

Its glowing eyes remained fixed on the sorcerers.

But the young mage did not care anymore.

He had tasted victory.

"Fall already!"

Another fire blast struck the owl’s chest.

BOOM.

The creature stumbled backward.

More blood ran down its body.

The sorcerer grinned.

"You’re finished!"

From the side of the clearing the Moonshade family watched everything unfold.

Their faces were pale.

One of them whispered nervously.

"If that owl dies..."

Another finished the thought quietly.

"...then we’re next."

They had no strength left to fight.

Not after everything that had happened earlier.

Even escaping seemed impossible.

And they all knew it.

Ivira stood nearby with Cornelia and Faith.

The three women watched the battle with growing concern.

Cornelia’s brows tightened.

"That owl..."

Faith swallowed quietly.

"It can’t hold on much longer."

Ivira clenched her hands.

"If it falls those two sorcerers will kill everyone here."

The explosions continued.

Each blast carved another wound into the owl’s body.

Feathers scattered across the clearing like torn leaves.

Blood soaked the ground beneath it.

Then suddenly a voice reached their minds.

A calm familiar voice.

"Let me strengthen this owl."

Ivira froze.

Her eyes widened.

"...Cain."

Cornelia and Faith both looked around quickly.

They could not see him.

But they knew that voice.

Relief mixed with shock in their hearts.

Meanwhile the younger sorcerer gathered all the mana he had left.

His staff glowed brighter than ever before.

"Let’s end this!"

A massive sphere of fire formed above his staff.

The heat from the spell made the air ripple.

He thrust the staff forward.

"Burn!"

The fireball shot across the clearing and struck the owl directly.

BOOOOOOM!

The explosion shook the entire forest.

Flames burst outward in every direction.

A cloud of smoke and dust rose high into the sky.

The younger sorcerer lowered his staff slowly.

His chest rose and fell with heavy breaths.

The injured sorcerer laughed behind the shield.

"That did it."

"There’s no way it survived that."

The explosion had been enormous.

Even before that final blast the owl had been badly wounded.

Its feathers were torn.

Its body covered in blood.

There was no way such a creature could survive that attack.

The younger sorcerer nodded with satisfaction.

"Finally."

He stretched his shoulders.

"Now we can deal with the rest."

Both of them turned slowly toward the Moonshade family.

Their eyes filled with cold intent.

The younger sorcerer pointed his staff at them.

"You all are next."

The Moonshade vampires stiffened in fear.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

For a moment the clearing fell silent except for the faint crackling of dying flames where the explosion had struck.

Then something echoed through the forest.

A sound that froze every person in place.

A massive cry.

A deep powerful cry that shook the air itself.

The cry of an enormous owl.
