My Life as a Farm Owner in a Thriller World-Chapter 113: Yucai Middle School 14
The bird seemed almost bashful. It lifted its rotting, featherless wings to hide its ball-shaped, vein-entangled head.
After all, birds were creatures of simple guts and instinct. Even though it had become a grotesque corruption, some habits were hard to shed.
It had held it in all the way from Mushroom Village to here—it hadn't been easy.
The butler's gaze lingered briefly on the fresh lump of flesh. Even after being eaten and excreted, it remained vibrant, filled with a strange vitality and temptation.
In fact, once separated from the bird's body, the lump began to proliferate. Its growth was slow, barely noticeable, but unmistakably alive.
The butler recognized it at once.
If, by some accident, Wan Qian had fed this bird a bit of the Flesh-and-Blood God's own flesh, then its extraordinary strength would make sense.
Although the bird couldn't fully digest it and could only absorb a small portion, that alone was enough to benefit it greatly.
After all, the Flesh-and-Blood God was no weak, low-faith dog god like the Inugami.
"Ms. Wan has matters to attend to here. If you appear without warning, you'll disrupt her plans."
The butler did not soften his stance for the bird's pitiful demeanor. instead, he began a subtle psychological manipulation, speaking in a gentle yet firm manner.
The bird, incapable of resisting such words. The veins growing from its neck drooped weakly, completely limp on the ground.
"To avoid disturbing her, you had best stay out of her sight for now," the butler continued smoothly. "It will be better to meet again once you've returned to the farm."
"Mama..." The bird gave a plaintive cry, but it was clear it accepted his suggestion.
The butler arranged for it to remain perched on the roof of the dormitory building. Then he turned, preparing to retire for the night.
But in the depths of the dark sky, a girl's voice rang out:
"Dark... Farm—" Her tone was stiff, each word bitten off. "Come... to... work... for... Wan... Qian..."
The butler froze and turned toward the source of the sound.
In the cool night breeze, the girl's tattered white dress fluttered, exposing her thin, spindly legs. Her entire body was pitch black, as though merging with the night itself.
But the butler's gaze went beyond her, to what floated behind her in the sky— An enormous "eye," tethered to her by her long, trailing hair that dragged along the ground.
It blotted out half the heavens in his view. Above hung a sea of scarlet blood, churning as if it could come crashing down at any moment.
For the first time, the butler's ever-present refined smile stiffened.
The intense aura of corruption was nothing like that of the bird just now; it was incomparably stronger.
The girl tilted her head. The immense eye floating in the air tilted with her, as though staring straight at the butler.
"Do... you... know... the... owner... of... Dark... Farm?"
The blood sea above seethed. Sticky, stinking bubbles surfaced and burst one after another.
The girl opened her mouth, like an infant learning to speak, forcing out flat syllables:
"She... said... I... can... work... here—"
Butler: "..."
Very well. Ms. Wan always manages to bring him extraordinary surprises.
Even during a campus visit, she still remembered to recruit new staff.
Truly, no one could be more fitting as the master of the farm.
The butler's smile bloomed again.
"Of course. I am Miss Wan's assistant, the butler of Dark Farm."
In his pitch-black pupils, the girl's eyeless face reflected back, as tender as if he were gazing upon a lover.
His tone was soft, measured, impeccably polite: "Dark Farm welcomes talents like you to join us. But since it is already late, and Miss Wan is resting, if you don't mind, allow me to arrange your position for now."
The next day. At Yucai Middle School, the students had already finished breakfast, completed morning exercises, and attended two classes.
Bright sunlight streamed in through the windows, illuminating the entire single dorm room.
Wan Qian had just woken up. She glanced at her phone to check the time and realized she had overslept. Hastily, she got up, washed, and headed out.
The sky over Yucai High School was a pale, hazy white. It was clearly a beautiful, sunny day, yet when she looked up, it felt as if a frosted glass stood between her and the sun, obscuring its position.
The butler, as always, was dressed in a neat black tailcoat, his hands meticulously clad in pristine white gloves, a polite, unchanging smile on his face.
He stood not far from the entrance of the student dormitory, tall and upright, giving no sign of fatigue.
After an unknown length of time, the butler finally saw Wan Qian emerge from the dormitory.
"Ms. Wan," he greeted as he approached.
Wan Qian had slept well the previous night, without a single dream. Her full rest gave her a radiant, energetic appearance: black hair, fair skin, bright eyes, gleaming teeth, exuding vibrant life from head to toe.
She returned the greeting cheerfully: "Good morning, Mr. Butler."
The butler inclined his head slightly and smiled. "You've worked hard, Ms. Wan. I didn't expect that even while away from the farm, you would still think about recruiting staff."
A faint blush of embarrassment crossed Wan Qian's face before her smile faded.
"Uh... you already know about that?"
She hadn't yet figured out how to explain to the butler that she had recruited someone while in the school restroom the previous day.
Should she just tell him that while using the bathroom at Yucai Middle School, she saw a disabled little girl with no eyes, felt sorry for her, and spontaneously invited her to work at her farm?
She had claimed to follow all farm rules, yet her fleeting act of charity had broken protocol. It was undeniably embarrassing.
"Actually, I think it's not easy for that young girl to come out and look for work..." Wan Qian's expression was slightly nervous.
"Besides, considering the previous example with Liu Fu at the farm, hiring someone similar shouldn't... cause any problems, right?"
Though she was the farm owner, she knew it was unwise to be too autocratic; employee input still mattered.
Moreover, the butler had been assigned by her great-uncle and worked diligently for the farm's development—a trustworthy and reliable aide.
Fortunately, the butler raised no objections, instead giving a warm smile. "Of course."
Wan Qian blinked in surprise. "Eh?"
Looking at her seriously, the butler said earnestly: "In my opinion, the decisions made by the farm owner are entirely correct. Dark Farm is fortunate to have a farm owner who cares so deeply for production."
Was he seriously just buttering up the boss? Wan Qian felt her cheeks heat up at the butler's words, a little embarrassed.
"N-no, that's going a bit too far, isn't it?"
The butler continued to praise her. "How could it be too far? With a farm owner like you, I believe Dark Farm will thrive and flourish more and more."
"...Fine, if that's what you think, then so be it."
His smile never wavered as he continued: "As for the employee you recruited yesterday, I've already arranged her position."
