My Demon Wife In The Apocalypse: I Can Control Minds!-Chapter 84 - 83- Signs Of War (Part 5)
Chapter 83- Signs Of War (Part 5)
It took Jack around 15 minutes to make it back to the base. His broken leg made running extremely hard, and with the constant earthquakes, the roads splitting open and swallowing everything, and even the buildings falling on top of his head. Jack had to take detours, avoid populated streets, and any possible path that could be his demise.
It was tricky, but with some maneuvering and intelligence, he was able to pave a path back to the base. Luckily, the base itself was situated far away from any buildings, so it wasn’t threatened by the falling structures. Also, since its bases were sturdy, the earthquake didn’t destroy most of the buildings inside.
However, upon reaching the area, he was horrified by the scenes. The road had split open in the middle, running all the way to the base, destroying the main wall and penetrating it. He could hear screams inside mixed with the violent earthquakes and the sound of pulsating energy above his head.
He heaved up and down before he pulled his sword out and rushed toward the scene.
’Nobody died. Nobody died. I am certain nobody died.’ He kept repeating in his head, almost praying, that he didn’t find corpses inside. His heart was racing, and so was his mind. A million thoughts crossed it, and a million ideas formed and disappeared. He wanted to know if he could somehow save this place.
He had to first get everyone out of danger, and then he could think about where to go or what to do.
However, upon stepping inside, all he saw made his heart sink to his stomach. It was... chaos. The entire base was a complete and utter disaster. The earthquake has split the entire place into different parts, completely separated from one another.
Many... Many corpses riddled the place. Most of them were stuck between the large cracks, getting completely crushed by the moving plates. Many others were running for their lives, not knowing where to go.
"SAVE ME!!!! SAVE ME PLEASE!! SOMEONE!!"
He saw a lady sliding down to her demise. Quickly, he rushed toward her, grabbing her arm at the very last moment.
"I got you!" He yelled and yanked her up, barely saving her life.
"T-Thank you so much! Hick, thank you..." Immediately, she started crying as her entire body shook from fear.
"Don’t wait here, leave the base now! It’s safer outside!" He yelled as he continued to run deeper inside. All he saw around him were people dying by the dozens, he tried to save some, only to fail. His useless leg made it even harder to do that and put his life at more risk than ever before.
He can’t effectively dodge or jump over large gaps without straining his only working leg.
"Luna!! Alex!! Where are you?!" He yelled. "Emi!! Evan! Anyone!"
He rushed toward the inside of the building. The situation inside was not much better. Everything was a complete mess, and large cracks were already forming on the walls and the ceiling. Some parts of the ceiling fell, blocking many paths and trapping people inside.
Pushing himself through, Jack tried to walk toward the lounge.
"Luna!! Answer me!!"
*BOOOOM*
Another chunk of the ceiling fell, barely missing him. Then, another chunk fell, blocking his path. He looked left and right, his eyes searching for any passage he could take. Eventually, he saw a small hole that he could squeeze through.
"Luna!!"
As he continued running deeper into the base, he yelled for the girl that he couldn’t find. There was no trace of her or the others. That only made him even more worried. At that moment, all his anger toward Luna, all the grudge he held against her, disappeared completely, and all he could think about was her well-being.
Just the idea of her death made his heart grow so cold that he couldn’t bear it. He simply couldn’t accept such an outcome. It isn’t right and will never be.
’Be safe. You’d better be safe!’ He clenched his teeth in sheer fear.
"J-Jack!! Is that you?"
At that moment, as he took a turn, Jack heard a voice calling for him. On the other side was a blocked path filled with rubble. He couldn’t see beyond it.
"Alex? Is that you?"
"Yeah! We’re here!"
Jack rushed to the rubble. "Is everyone there?!"
"Yes! But... Jack, Luna... Luna is heavily injured! She tried to get everyone out of the building." He said with a tearful tone.
Purely from his voice, Jack knew that it was extremely bad. "Hold on! I’m going to get you out of there! Step back, I’m going to blast the rubble."
"Yes!"
Without hesitation, Jack stepped back and brandished his sword. Then, he used Myth’s Resolve as the blade started shining with a bright light. After that, he used the other hand to charge it up with Red Lightning. The sizzling blade looked like something out of this world. The sheer energy pulsating within it at that moment was enough to shine through the dark place.
Gripping the sword with both hands, Jack approached the rubble and then used all his power to swing the sword down.
*Swish*
All the energy stored within the blade cut through the stone and dirt in a single second.
*BOOOOOOOOOM*
All the rubble was blasted everywhere, flying in all directions as it carved a path through. It was a single hit, yet it was enough to push tons of rubble from its initial location. The sheer power of that attack was just devastating.
"Agh, so much dirt!"
Peeking through, Jack saw Evan, Emi, Alex, and a motionless Luna lying on the ground.
"Jack! You’re here!"
"Give me Luna. I will pull her in." He said urgently. "This place won’t last long!"
Evan was the first to move as he quickly lifted the girl and tried to pass her through the hole. Jack took her easily and put her in his arms as he jumped back. Looking at the girl, his face paled, and his eyes widened.
She looked... dead.
A huge, gruesome injury had punctured her stomach open, and blood was gushing out endlessly.
She also had a broken arm, a gush in her head, and many cuts and scratches.
"What the hell happened..." Jack breathed in and out as he tried to contain his emotions. He felt sick to his stomach, and a sensation he had never experienced before crept into his mind. Fear... A mind-numbing fear that threatened to take over him completely.
Quickly, he shook his head and turned around to start moving. At the same time, the others moved after him, and the group rushed out of the building. More and more walls fell, closing paths one by one. They ran, with Jack being behind because of his leg.
"Left! Move left!"
The wall that fell made them change direction. Eventually, the group reached a window and broke through it. Jumping out one by one, Jack gave Luna a hand before he also leaped through and fell on the ground. At the same time, a large cloud of dust escaped the window and fell on them.
"Cough! Cough!" Jack spat out a mouthful of saliva as he coughed profusely. Then, he quickly crawled toward Luna and put his hand on her injury, pressing it with all the power he could.
"Grab me a shirt!" Jack yelled. "I need to stop the bleeding!"
His hand wasn’t enough. Blood still seeped through with ease. Even with Luna’s high regeneration abilities, she was still unable to stop the bleeding automatically.
"Here, have my shirt!" Evan said as he undressed. Taking it, Jack ripped the cleanest part he could see and then pressed it into the injury. The cloth started soaking up, but... For a few moments, the bleeding stopped.
Then, Jack quickly put his head fingers against Luna’s neck. He prayed in his head. But... No pulse.
"Fuck..." Quickly, he adjusted his position and started doing chest compressions. "Come on, Luna. Stay with me."
He pressed up and down as he watched her reactions. Nothing, the heart wasn’t beating. So, he leaned in and put his lips on hers before he blew the air in. Once, twice, three times.
Everyone watched with horrified looks on their faces. Nobody could utter a single word. They couldn’t even accept what they were seeing.
The only one who didn’t give up or stop was Jack. He kept doing it for over a minute with no result.
’You can’t do this to me. You can’t just die now! I won’t let you leave like this.’ In his head, all he could think about was to make her heart jump start again.
But, CPR and chest compressions weren’t working. So, Jack stopped... He heaved up and down before he stared at Luna’s body.
"..."
"No... No, Luna..." Emi put her hand on her mouth as tears welled up.
Alex looked away, crying silently while Evan simply stared... Completely blank.
