My Demon Wife In The Apocalypse: I Can Control Minds!-Chapter 83 - 82- Signs Of War (Part 4)
Chapter 82- Signs Of War (Part 4)
Everything was growing dark. Jack’s eyes were hazy, but for some reason, he could see with clarity at that moment. When death was so close, people gained the most clarity they ever felt in their lives. That was what Jack thought before, and now that he was finally experiencing those last few moments of his life, he was able to realize that... He was right.
Life was truly lived only when death was involved. Life, in its purest sense, was the desire to avoid death. That deep desire not to face the end makes life truly tasteful, meaningful, and purposeful.
That made him feel... peaceful. He had finally experienced that sensation he had always dreamt of. The feeling of being alive.
"Jack... Jack..."
A voice spoke in his head; it was his mother calling for him. He missed her voice a bit. She was a very punctual and hard-working woman, but she was also the reason why he didn’t become a complete psychopath. She understood him the most, along with Luna; she cared for him, tried to be there for him, and understood his quirky mind.
’This isn’t... too bad...’ He mused as he exhaled. The monsters continued pinching into his skin as they climbed up to his head to finally take over his mind. ’I have had fun the past two days. I’m satisfied with this.’
Even though it was bitter, Jack didn’t regret what he experienced. He enjoyed himself, used powers beyond anyone’s mind, and was able to be the strongest in the world for a short period of time. He had done more in two days than in his entire life.
Slowly, his eyes started closing up as he gave up the last embers of strength he had in his body.
At that very moment, and when things seemed to have come to an end, something happened that changed everything. Something Jack had forgotten about even though it was within his vision almost every second of the day.
*BADUMP*
The torn sky suddenly beat loudly. A beat that was exceptionally stronger than any of the ones before it. A large wave of energy descended on Earth, sweeping through everything with extreme power, tens of times stronger than before.
Buildings were shool violently, and things were swept away by the raw power of the Aether being pumped into the world.
*BADUMP*
The wave after that was even stronger, completely wrecking the entire world in a mere second. Earth shook violently as if hit by an earthquake.
The insects on Jack’s body were thrown off balance, thrown into chaos by the violent Aether.
"Agh!!!" The boy was thrown with them, rolling on the ground. "What...?" His eyes opened wide as he looked up.
*BADUMP* *BADUMP* *BADUMP* *BADUMP*
Several quick beats slammed into his body again, wrecking him as he was pushed back several dozen feet, slamming against the wall. Clenching his teeth, as he quickly used Aether to protect himself. The layer of energy created somewhat of a barrier to stop him.
He pushed himself off the wall and looked around him. All the insects were being thrown around like ragdolls. Many died in the first wave, and more were dying as they were being crushed by a power far above their level.
"What the..." Jack looked up and saw it. The torn sky has expanded even more, showing more of the chaos within it. The red storm brewing in this torn dimension only grew more violent, sending more and more waves of energy.
The earthquake grew even more violent, shaking Jack off his balance.
"Shit! Is it happening now? Is the world changing now?!" He muttered. "Not now of all times..."
It was the worst possible time for such a catastrophic event to occur. The waves were rapidly increasing in frequency and volume, and the earthquakes were only growing more intense.
At the same time, the insects started recovering and tried to attack Jack again. Their fear didn’t stop them from targeting their biggest enemy.
Until....
*CRACK*
The street beneath the boy’s feet started cracking and opening wide. A large gap formed that cut through the street and beyond. Jack fell to the ground roughly and quickly rolled out of danger before the gap swallowed him.
The crack expanded exponentially, pushing him farther and farther away from the monsters. Seeing that, the boy clenched his teeth and pushed his injured, tired body off the ground as he started running away.
The cracks were spreading like branches everywhere, and for a moment, Jack almost slipped before he leaped and reached the other side before he got completely stuck.
The building all around him started falling like domino pieces. As he tried to cross the road, he immediately halted seeing the large building descending on him. Quickly, he channeled whatever was left of his Aether as he dashed to the side, barely dodging the crashing structure. Debris slammed into his back.
"Fuck." He cursed as he continued running. At the same time, behind him, the insects were completely buried under the tons of rubble, and many more chased after him as they flew over it.
The waves continued to assault the entire world, and Jack barely could stop them from throwing him off balance again. All the buildings around him were falling one by one.
"I need to leave this street before it gets completely closed!"
Increasing his speed, he could see the end of the street. But, at the same time, he could see the buildings ahead swaying and tipping toward the ground. He barely had a few seconds to make it out of there alive.
His feet moved like a flash. Even when he is seeping blood like a torn bag, he could still run way faster than anyone else. His eyes were completely locked on the end.
"Come on, come on, come on!" He mumbled. "I just need a few seconds!"
*CRACK*
But, as if to make fun of his determination, the street beneath him started cracking too, and for a moment, the boy almost ran into his demise. However, he quickly shifted his balance, putting all the pressure on his back and waist as he took a sharp turn. With that speed and momentum, such a sharp change would’ve wrecked his body. But his resilient and flexible bones and muscles handled it with mild discomfort.
Continuing his run, the boy saw the last building starting to fall. He had one second and a dozen meters to cross.
’Just jump! Just jump! Just jump!!" He muttered as he closed his eyes and used all his power to leap, forward. His body twisted as he got ready to roll the last few meters. At the same time, the world became dark as he found himself right beneath the falling structure.
*BOOOOOOM*
The building crashed into the street, creating a loud noise and a huge cloud of dust.
"Agh... God... Dammit..." Jack groaned in pain as he looked back. He had survived, battered and completely covered in dust, but he survived. However, his leg didn’t escape as it got completely crushed under the rubble.
He felt dizzying pain hit his head like a train. With whatever force he still had, he pulled his leg out and looked at it. A gruesome sight was an understatement... His leg was completely shattered and bent at an odd angle. The break was so bad that he could even see some bones protruding out of the skin.
"..." Sucking a deep breath, Jack looked up and wiped the dust off his face. "I can still move..."
Swallowing the pain, he stood up with his working leg and started moving slowly toward his destination. The sheer level of pain he was feeling at that moment would’ve knocked someone out. But with his power increasing, so did his will and pain tolerance. He could handle way more stress and way more horrible injuries without being completely immobilized.
But, that also meant... He was still completely vulnerable. Behind him, the insects were slowly crawling their way through the rubble, albeit way slower than before. Thousands and thousands of them died under the rubble, getting completely squashed and crushed. But their numbers were still far from small. Enough to invade the base.
Picking up his communication device, Jack contacted Luna.
"Luna, do you copy?" He asked tiredly. But, no response. "Luna! I said Do you copy?!" He yelled again. No reply.
All of Jack’s hopes to get some sort of news about the base were thrown into the trash. He had to get there himself as soon as possible. That place wouldn’t last long without him present.
"Goddamit!" He cursed. "Something must’ve happened back there! I need to hurry."
With that, forcing himself, he started jumping on his working leg as he moved toward the base. He knew that the situation there was most definitely catastrophic and in his mind... Jack was preparing for the worst possible outcome.
’As if this isn’t already the worst possible outcome. Screw all of this.’
