My Demon Friends-Chapter 664 - 626: Missed a Week of Classes
Early in the morning.
Huai Xu paced back and forth in the living room, swinging his arms. Despite his ability to walk on snow without leaving a trace, he made the floorboards creak loudly; he clearly looked bored.
Zhou Li was finally awakened by the noise.
After the Elm King fell into a deep sleep last night, Zhou Li tried to coax Tuanzi to sleep with him. He failed and went to sleep alone. According to his habit, if he woke up midway, his sleep process would be significantly prolonged. Therefore, he was still drowsy, merely opening his eyes to stare at Huai Xu.
"What are you doing?"
"Um..."
Finally awake, huh!
Feigning indifference, Huai Xu continued pacing. He glanced at Zhou Li as he walked and said, "You haven't gone to class in a week. Your studies are completely ruined."
Zhou Li pulled the quilt over his head.
A moment later, he removed the quilt, sat up, picked up the glass of water from the coffee table, and took a couple of sips, which cleared his head a bit.
"You were the one who said not to go to class, and you're the one saying my studies are ruined."
"What I said is the truth. You've attended fewer classes this semester than I have."
"..." Zhou Li paused briefly. "Where did you go last night?"
"It's the season for peaches to ripen, so I went up the mountain to pick some." Huai Xu gestured towards the coffee table with his chin. "I often wasn't home at night before," he added, "but you wouldn't wake up in the middle of the night, so you didn't know..."
"I understand."
Zhou Li gestured that no explanation was needed.
Only then did he notice two baskets of peaches on the coffee table: one basket of nectarines and another of fuzzy peaches. The nectarines didn't look very appealing, their surfaces often cracked, while the fuzzy peaches looked nice but were covered in a layer of fine fuzz... This Old monster didn't even wash the fruits he put in the living room.
Looking away, he casually asked, "Aren't plums supposed to be ripe around this time too?"
"How do you know?" Huai Xu asked.
"Catching crayfish the night before last, picking peaches last night, picking plums tonight... what are you scheming for tomorrow night?" Zhou Li asked with concern.
"..." Huai Xu was expressionless. "None of your damn business!"
"Oh."
Zhou Li threw off the light blanket and got up—oh, no, got *off the sofa*.
Just then, Brother Nan also pushed open her door, emerging sleepy-eyed. She held Tuanzi in one hand and scratched her hair with the other, a stubborn cowlick at the top of her head swaying as she walked.
She greeted Zhou Li and Huai Xu, "Morning."
"Morning," Zhou Li replied, then asked with concern, "Why are you up so early? Couldn't you have slept a bit longer?"
"Some damn delivery guy called and woke me up." Brother Nan dropped her hand from her hair, tossed Tuanzi towards him like a ragdoll, and headed out. "I'm going to pick up the delivery."
"Be careful!"
Zhou Li caught Tuanzi anxiously. "Don't do that again; you might hurt Lord Dumpling."
Tuanzi, in his arms, rubbed its eyes and comforted him nonchalantly, "It's alright..."
Brother Nan had already left. The door slammed shut again. Seriously, she has no sense of subtlety.
A few minutes later.
Brother Nan returned, carrying two packages as if sleepwalking. She threw them on the floor and went to wash up.
By the time she returned from washing up, the helpful Old monster had already opened the packages for her. He and Zhou Li were now looking at a few items with serious and puzzled expressions.
When elementary school students read something, they like to mutter it aloud:
"Ultra-thin, invisible air...
"Threaded...
"Classic delay...
"Nourishing yin and beautifying, regulating..."
Huai Xu and Zhou Li looked at each other.
Noticing Brother Nan approaching, the two suddenly felt a sense of crisis.
Huai Xu opted for a confused expression. He looked up at Brother Nan, trying to get off easy by acting cute. "Brother Nan, what is this?"
Zhou Li, however, immediately dropped the items. With empty hands, he said to Brother Nan, "Huai Xu opened them all!"
Huai Xu whirled his head to glare at him.
Of course, Zhou Li couldn't see it.
Tuanzi, still trying to climb onto his lap, craned its neck to look, murmuring softly, "What are you looking at? Let Lord Dumpling see..."
Brother Nan walked over naturally, her expression unchanged and seemingly unconcerned. "Mianmian and Qian Qian bought them," she said. "Since we haven't been to class for a week, they probably thought something happened between us during the May Day trip... Plus, your Little Cousin is a real troublemaker!"
"Oh~~"
Zhou Li understood.
"Oh~~"
Huai Xu followed suit.
Brother Nan picked up a box of 'umbrellas' and examined it, her expression still natural as she mumbled, "Let me see the expiration date... Oh wow, five years. That long?"
That long, huh...
For some reason, Zhou Li also felt a pang of regret.
Brother Nan then tossed it to him. "Here, take it. Keep it for later use."
Zhou Li fumbled to catch it, as if it were scalding hot. His expression turned awkward.
He still couldn't figure it out. They were clearly Brother Nan's, so why wasn't she bothered at all? And how had he ended up being the flustered and embarrassed one?
Meanwhile, Tuanzi kept tugging at his clothes, asking in its clear little voice what those things were, and he had no idea how to answer.
At that moment, Brother Nan spoke again, facing Huai Xu. "Great Devil King."
"Ah, ah?"
Huai Xu looked at Zhou Li, feeling somewhat uncomfortable. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
For some reason, calling himself the Great Devil King in front of Zhou Li had gradually started to make him feel a tad uncomfortable.
He was a bona fide Great Devil King who had slain countless demons and slaughtered countless humans, capable of taking a life from thousands of miles away as easily as reaching into his own pocket. How had he fallen to this state?
"I would like to ask for a favor."
"What?"
"Help me gather intelligence on the movements within the Demon Kingdoms—all four of them. I need more detailed information on Yu Country's recent activities," Brother Nan said, adding, "She's the one asking."
"Hmph. Since you're asking, Brother Nan, I'll do you this favor." Huai Xu adopted an expression suggesting he wasn't keen on telling the Elm King. "If it's about her movements after she was sealed, I can give you a general idea right now. As for recent events, I've heard some rumors, but they need to be confirmed."
"Just tell me what you know."
"Okay!"
Huai Xu smacked his lips, sat down excitedly, and began his account to Brother Nan.
An entire morning went by.
Huai Xu picked up his tea and took a sip. For a talkative Old monster like him, today was undoubtedly satisfying. "As for the latest...
"Ever since her Sealed Land was discovered, Yu Country and indeed the other three Demon Kingdoms have tacitly assumed she was already dead, or at the very least, gone. So, I've heard that the other three His Highnesses the Demon Kings have been pressuring Hong Ran, Yu Country's current regent, urging Yu Country to quickly implement new election procedures and choose a new Demon King to negotiate with them.
"But it seems Hong Ran hasn't agreed and keeps stalling. Of course, these are just unsubstantiated rumors; no one can confirm them.
"However, the new elections have indeed not started.
"That's all."
"That's it?"
"That's it."
"Oh, okay then."
To be honest, Brother Nan was also listening with keen interest.
Then, she looked at her watch. "It's noon already. Let's go out for lunch."
Zhou Li nodded.
Tuanzi started clamoring for rice porridge with fish soup again, but no one paid it any mind.
Brother Nan continued, "I think we can go back to school tomorrow. We've been cooped up here for seven days; we're getting so restless we're about to lose our tails. Even if I go to school, I can't promise I'll attend every day, so don't rush me, Zhou Li."
"Got it."
Zhou Li hadn't looked at Brother Nan's chat history with the Elm King these past few days. However, it now seemed she and the Elm King had reached a preliminary understanding.
And it seemed like they were communicating quite well?
Because as soon as they stepped out of the apartment, Brother Nan began to narrate to the Elm King, as if talking to herself:
"This is the apartment number.
"This is the elevator. These two buttons mean up and down. Once inside, you press the button for your floor.
"These are bicycles, motorcycles, and electric scooters.
"This is a car.
"This is a crosswalk and these are traffic lights. You have to cross at the crosswalk; no jaywalking. And at intersections with lights, you can only go when the light is green. Don't run red lights. If you run a red light, you could easily cause an accident, and if you wreck someone's car, you'll have to pay for it.
"..."
She explained with great enthusiasm, though it wasn't clear why.
When Zhou Li and Huai Xu looked puzzled, she explained, "I'm making things clear to her so she doesn't go out in my body and do something reckless, get photographed, and ruin my reputation."
It made perfect sense.
