Chapter 289: Ageing Like Fine Wine

(Arata)

I didn’t want to get up from his side. Finally, both of us were at peace, our hearts had synced, and our bodies too.

We kissed and cuddled for a long time, until the nurse arrived and had to kick me out. He needed rest and more sleep.

"Arata, go home and rest. Eat properly, take your supplements. I am fine now." He tried to reassure me as I stood in the doorway watching him with a pout.

Every instinct in my body wanted to run to him and wrap myself around him like a needy kitten.

"I am not leaving until you are discharged." I blew him a kiss and exited the room before he could protest.

The morning came with the arrival of Baba, so I let Zaylen go home. He brought me breakfast and a change of clothes.

"How is he?" Baba asked.

"Better. The doctor said he was lucky no vital organs were hit."

Baba let out a relieved sigh.

I had a small breakfast, and soon after, Karsten’s family arrived—Camilla and his siblings. They entered with serious and tense faces.

I hugged Camilla and she almost broke down in my arms so I explained.

"He is awake and the doctor said he will make a full recovery. No organ got damaged," I consoled her, rubbing her back. Everyone signed in relief at my words, the grimness dissipated from their faces.

"Can I see him?" She frantically asked, tears floated in her eyes. A mother’s heart always holds an immeasurable amount of love for her child. And I knew, no matter how stern and dismissive she was with him, he was her whole world.

We confirmed with the nurse and Camilla was let in to meet Karsten.

The rest of us remained outside. Roshra tightly hugged me. "I knew my brother would be fine. He is one tough nut." I nodded in agreement.

I made introductions for others.

"Baba, this is Rahsir and Roshra. Karsten’s siblings." Both of them shook hands with Baba and I could see their reverence for him.

"It’s an honour to meet you," Rahsir, whom I had never thought would act so mature and serious, told my Baba.

"You are a hero and so handsome. Ageing like fine wine, Mr Kincaid." Roshra couldn’t help but gush over Baba. Her cheeks naturally turned pink.

Baba had to awkwardly smile at her while Rahsir shook his head at his sister. The nurse came out and called for the twins.

"Your brother would like to see you."

They hurried away, leaving me with Baba.

"They seem to respect me a lot. I could sense from how they looked at me." Baba turned to face me, a slight surprise coating his face.

"You are a kind of saviour for them. They hate their father. Their mother committed suicide because you know what he used to do to women. So, when they came to know you are the reason he was finally locked away, their respect for you grew."

Baba simply shook his head. "I did what any reasonable man should have done." Being so down to earth, he never took credit for anything.

Hades soon joined us and respectfully asked. "I have some news, can we talk?"

Both of us gave him a nod. "Does the name Kalias Kincaid mean anything to you? Last name is the same so I am assuming a family member."

Baba’s jaw tightened hearing that name and I had to place my hand on his arm where muscles had flexed. I knew exactly what that name meant to him.

"He is my half-brother," Baba informed Hades and he tensely nodded.

Kalias Kincaid was my uncle and Baba’s half-brother. Their father, Mithias Kincaid, never accepted Baba as his son; instead, his older brother, Montague Kincaid, who we considered our real grandfather, although we had never met him, adopted Baba and gave him his name.

"He is the one who ordered the attack on you. His reason was revenge for his father."

Basically, both Kalias and my Baba had the same father. The difference was that Mithias only considered Kalias as his son since my Baba was born to a high-end prostitute he used to frequent.

"Why am I not even surprised. He had done objectionable things in the past but coming for my daughter like that is unacceptable." Baba clenched his hands, the shadows of pain and betrayal so prominent on his face.

"Just give me your word and I will deal with him." Hades stood straight and offered his services without even flinching.

Baba shook his head. "No, I will do this the right way. I will send him exactly where I sent my father. He thinks he can hurt my family and I won’t retaliate because he is my half-brother. Then he is solely mistaken."

Baba then turned to me. "Will you be alright? I need to visit the police station and give my statement against Kalias."

I diligently nodded. We were done getting hurt by people. Those who wouldn’t stop will be dealt with.

"Go, Baba. My other family is here now. Deal with the ones trying to hurt us. Family protects, not harms."

Only being related by blood wouldn’t make you family. Sometimes the found family over the given family became stronger with deeper bonds.

As it happened with Grandma Meena and Baba and the same was happening with me and Karsten’s family.

"Keep my daughter safe," Baba told Hades and he placed his hand on his heart. The man didn’t take orders from anyone else and here he was agreeing with Baba.

Once Baba was gone, I was also permitted inside Karsten’s room.

Karsten had sought special permission from the doctor, ensuring he was fine.

I entered and Roshra instantly took my hand, leading me towards Karsten.

Camilla was sitting closer to his bed while Rahsir stood by the window with his legs and arms crossed.

"Come, Arata." Camilla ushered me while Karsten observed me with his hungry eyes, ready to devour even in front of his family.

She settled me beside Karsten and took both of our hands in hers.

"So, Arata, have you forgiven him, or do I need to teach him a lesson? Because I am desperate to meet my grandchild."

I blushed at her words and lowered my gaze. "We have. He just needs to behave."

"Oh! He will. Otherwise, I will be pulling his ear," Camilla threatened in her motherly tone.

"No one can imagine, I was shot 24 hours ago." Karsten shook his head and Roshra came to his rescue.

"I am here brother. I am on your side."
