Chapter 288: Her Phoenix Powers

(Karsten)

When my eyes opened again, I found myself in a hospital room. A nurse was tending to me while all kinds of tubes had been attached to my body.

At least I was alive or so it seemed like. I tried to get up but the nurse quickly moved.

"No, no, keep lying down. You had surgery so we will take it slow." She came forward and checked my temperature, then jotted down readings from the monitors and adjusted the glucose IV.

I stared down at myself and the same stupid white gown I always teased Arata with covered half my body. My legs stuck out but a plain white sheet had been placed on them.

I didn’t even have undergarments on and was pretty sure a urine bag had been attached to me.

"Anyone here for me? Is Arata here? I would like to meet her." I asked the nurse and she smiled.

"Half an hour. Okay! You need to rest. You were shot." Adjusting the IV she finally left the room, leaving me with my muddled thoughts.

What if I hadn’t been there? I saw that Zyair’s guard was armed, and he fought with us, but he couldn’t have fought three armed men. Even that car ramming alone would have gotten them in serious trouble.

My thoughts were interrupted when the door opened and Arata stepped inside.

I saw how her Caribbean eyes widened and her chest rose and fell. Hundreds of emotions swept past her face as she struggled not to cry and just ran to be by my side.

"Karsten!" She choked on my name as concern flashed in her blue eyes. She just hugged me from the waist up, trying to be careful and avoid my injured waist.

Her lips rested on my forehead in a long sweet kiss.

So comforting and nurturing her presence was. My heart relaxed and overflowed with love as she pressed her cheek against mine.

"You gave me such a scare. Are you in pain? She sadly asked.

"Your safety was my utmost priority, and look, I am all good. Just wanted an excuse to wear this stupid hospital gown and find out for myself what the charm was all about?" I joked and she laughed, lifting her head slightly.

Her tender gaze remained locked on me. Her fingers slowly brushed away the locks from my forehead. The tips of her fingers—so tender that I almost closed my eyes and revelled in the feeling.

"Let this be the last time any of us wear it," she murmured.

"I guess you will have to at least a couple of times more," I wickedly answered, my eyes dipping to her belly.

Her eyes widened, "A couple?"

"Yes, I am not going to be done with one...will be putting more babies inside there," I answered feeling no shame and somehow bolder than ever.

She gave me a look which was the embodiment of, ’Are you serious right now?’

"Says the man, who’s dick is connected to a bag right now," she teased back, taking a look at the tube going down.

"Mind you, it still functions. I wasn’t shot in the groin. Lucky me."

She laughed at my words, like the jingling of bells in a meadow. Arata brought so much colour and music to my life and that’s why I loved her.

"Get better first, Macho Man...and let this one pop out so we will plan the next one later." She patted my forehead as if I were a child she was trying to assuage with fake promises.

I carefully took her hand and placed it on my chest, right above my heart.

"Promise you will return with me, Arata. I am not leaving without you. Life is meaningless when you are not with me." I visibly sighed, my chest deflated.

She slowly rubbed her hand over my heart and carefully slipped into bed beside me without taking her shoes off. She just hugged me, her head on my chest where I loved it the most and quietly said.

"I will, but there will be some ground rules, and you will obey all of them."

My heart excitedly drummed inside my chest at her words. There was nothing else I wanted in this world but her.

"Anything, whatever you will say will go. Just name it, Arata." I turned my head and placed my lips on her forehead. She wasn’t even wearing a cap or scarf today. Her haphazardly destroyed hair made my heart bleed.

"Karsten, if we have a male child. He will not follow in your footsteps. Whatever rules you have regarding that, they need to change."

I had relentlessly thought about this issue and read the book of rules.

Although it was required that the firstborn male heir of the Mafia Lord was to ascend the throne after his father. But it also stated that the Mafia Lord had the right to change rules and laws.

This was something I could do. I never wanted this life, but I was cornered, and by no means did I wish for my son to have such a messed-up life.

"I will revise the law. Our children will have a safe space growing up and even after. I give you my word Arata." I felt her hand press down on my heart in affection.

"No more doing things without my consent," she continued to put forward her conditions. I listened quietly and agreed to each and every one of them.

"I will never betray your trust again. Everything will be transparent between us. Your rules, I will only be obeying them," I humbly said and she just hugged me tight.

"Oh! Karsten, how I love you when you are this compliant," she teased, but I knew she truly meant how much she loved me.

I had seen it.

Witnessed it.

Lived it.

"I will always be compliant. My reins are in your hands, my Phoenix."

She slightly lifted her head and our gazes met. A smirk had crept onto her lips.

"That’s a dangerous thing to do. I will thaw all your ice, make you all warm and cosy with my Phoenix powers."

I had to stifle a chuckle at her words or my freshly sealed wound would hurt.

"I am all in for that. I hope your Baba will give his permission now. Am I in his good books yet?"

She rubbed her nose on my neck, and warm, fuzzy sensations made my skin pebble.

"You have earned a few brownie points by saving our lives. I think he will be good now."

Her sweet flowery scent relaxed me further and I took deep inhales like a greedy man.

"I told you I will charm him."

She raised herself and stared into my eyes.

"By taking a bullet. Next time, try something easier." She leaned in, her soft lips brushing against mine, making desires circle me like hungry killer whales.

"But really, thank you for saving our lives, Karsten. I love you with all of my heart."

Her lips softly enveloped mine as her hand held my face in place and then both of us were lost in each other’s touch.
