Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 527: Workplace
Hazel Yates immediately added, "I won’t rush you anymore, but there’s one point I have to make clear. The Yates Family embroidery hasn’t found a successor yet. For those of you who marry first, I’ll let it go, but the last one to marry must find someone who meets my requirements as a successor to marry in. If you don’t want to be the unlucky one, do it sooner rather than later."
This kind of marriage pressure might be more effective than repetitive nagging.
However, aside from Norman Sutton taking it seriously, the other brothers didn’t seem to buy it.
Because they all knew Hazel Yates’s personality, when the right person comes along, regardless of whether that person can take her place or not, she wouldn’t cruelly break up her son’s happiness.
It’s just that the legacy of Yates Couture has become an issue.
Back then, they thought about having a daughter, initially wanting a girl to inherit the family’s handcrafted embroidery skills passed down through generations of the Yates Family, only to realize Audrey Sutton wasn’t suited for it.
When Audrey was young, Hazel Yates tried to nurture her, hoping exposure from a young age would lead to her picking up some skills as she grew.
But unexpectedly, although Audrey learned quickly, it was all superficial. She wouldn’t concentrate enough to dive deeper.
Which led to Audrey’s claim that she knew music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, but with the caveat — only to a superficial level.
Later, when Audrey took an interest in painting, seeing how much she enjoyed it, Hazel Yates couldn’t bring herself to force her precious daughter and enrolled her in a painting class, giving up on training Audrey as a successor for Yates Couture.
This matter was thus reluctantly shelved.
After the National Day holiday, Franklin Sutton returned to work.
Phoebe also started training with Norman Sutton at the club to become a game commentator.
The internship plans for Audrey Sutton and Barry Barrett at the company were also delayed until after the National Day holiday.
During the holiday, Audrey also arranged with Barry to buy several professional outfits for work during a shopping trip.
When she left the house in the morning, Audrey donned a small blazer and admired herself in the mirror for quite some time, insisting that Shane praise her.
Shane, being someone prone to blunt remarks, even if he thought she was beautiful, somehow his words never sounded pleasant: "Looks like you’ve aged ten years."
Audrey examined herself in the full-length mirror by the door for some time, initially questioning her taste but then remarked, "It’s good to look older, looks more suited to match you."
Consequently, Shane stormed out with a darkened expression.
Audrey quickly changed into the black flats she bought yesterday and chased after him.
Upon reaching the company, they saw Barry standing at the entrance waiting.
Audrey told Shane, "I’ll get off here, you can head to the garage."
Shane stopped the car, glanced at her, and asked, "You don’t need me to take you to the HR department?"
Audrey quickly refused, "No need, why should you take me? I can report in on my own."
Saying this, Audrey pushed open the car door and got out.
Seated in the car, Shane watched her not showing any hint of nervousness, actually appearing quite happy, as she walked into the company arm in arm with Barry, chatting and laughing.
Everyone in the office knew her. Nobody would make things difficult for her. She was unlikely to experience the harshness of the corporate world. Shane himself didn’t want her to face it, just worried that she might not adjust to an office setting after being so leisurely.
He even imagined her going in cheerfully and coming back in the evening saying stuff like she doesn’t want to work anymore.
Audrey wasn’t very familiar with the company. She only ever came to find Shane directly, so she didn’t know much about the office layout.
She wandered around the building with Barry for a while before finding the HR department.
Barry appeared a bit nervous and restrained, but Audrey didn’t mind much.
She was aware that it was because it was Shane’s company she could be so carefree. Knowing that even if she made mistakes, she wouldn’t be scolded. If it were someone else’s domain, she’d probably be nervously on edge.
Apparently, Shane had already spoken to the HR department, and by the time Audrey arrived, the staff seemed to be eagerly waiting as if they’ve been prepped with adrenaline, exceedingly enthusiastic.
After filling out the paperwork, they personally escorted them to the Finance Department.
Upon arrival, the department was in work mode, relatively quiet as everyone focused on their tasks.
The department head personally came out for the handover, and their workstations had been prepared, enthusiastically given instructions and assigned some relatively simple tasks.
Audrey had interned at Arthur Sutton’s company during summer and knew a bit about office software.
Barry had also crammed recently, so handling simple spreadsheets was manageable.
After the morning meeting, Shane quietly stopped by the Finance Department to take a look. Watching Audrey with her head down writing something, she did look rather serious and genuine.
Shane didn’t disturb her, standing at the door watching for a moment before quietly leaving.
"Sutton, need a bathroom break?" Barry quietly asked.
Audrey yawned, nodded, and the two walked hand-in-hand to the restroom.
While at a stall, she suddenly heard the sound of high heels from outside, followed by a woman’s voice saying, "Not even in this field, don’t know why they bother coming here; we have to worship them like living saints."
Subsequently, another woman’s voice chimed in cynically, "That’s because she’s lucky. She’s just here to pass the time and experience life. If she’s unhappy, she can just quit, since the Third Young Master has plenty of money."
"I think she’s quite ordinary-looking, just younger."
"Can you compare to her? Her family background is impressive. Even if she’s not good-looking, the Third Young Master marrying her is better than marrying you, because wealthy families look for powerful alliances, not just love."
"But I think she and the Third Young Master get along well. Didn’t she often bring him lunch at the company?"
"Ahem—" Barry pushed open the stall door and came out. Seeing Barry, the two women at the sink fell silent, looking embarrassed.
Audrey had long finished in the stall but stayed after hearing them badmouthing her, delaying her exit.
One reason was to avoid awkwardness; the other was her curiosity about what else they might say.
She had previously heard from Seraphina Vaughn that the corporate world is complicated, where people smile at you up front but gossip behind your back.
Experiencing it firsthand, Audrey realized how exasperated Seraphina Vaughn was when venting about this.
She wasn’t really bothered by what others said, just felt that stepping into society meant she could no longer live naively.
She also felt fortunate that, if forced to survive in such a work environment, she might become the type of person she currently detested.
