Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 523: Saw You Went to the Bar
Audrey Sutton stood at the entrance of the company, looking as if her soul had left her.
Phoebe King walked over and said, "Don’t let your imagination run wild. Call him first and ask. Maybe he just had something pop up and had to go out. Last time when you were jealous of me, you did the same thing—stormed off halfway through, then hid and cried alone. And what happened then?"
Audrey Sutton drooped her eyes, looking down at her phone, unable to dial out. Maybe she hadn’t figured out how to bring up the topic yet, or maybe she was scared she’d really uncover something if she called.
Phoebe King sighed and said, "You might as well call him. You don’t speak, I’ll probe for you first."
Phoebe called, and after a long series of "beep-beep" sounds, Shane Warner’s impatient voice came from the other end: "What is it now?"
Phoebe King glanced at Audrey Sutton, who was standing next to her with ears perked up, and deliberately lowered her voice to ask Shane: "Where did you run off to? I heard from Mor that she just saw you going to a bar. I haven’t even told your wife yet. She went to the restroom, so I’m secretly calling you. Your wife is restless at home thinking about you, you better not do her wrong."
Shane sounded a bit displeased: "Where did you hear that rumor? When did I go to a bar? Stop stirring things up, and tell her to get some rest early!"
Phoebe added, "Then where did you go? Mor said no one answered when she called your office just now."
Shane felt something was off the more he listened. Since when was Lucian Quinn this nosy?
So Shane asked pointedly, "Was it Mor who called my office or did Sutton call?"
Sutton had a history of these check-up calls.
Phoebe was momentarily stunned, then Audrey frantically gestured to her, and Phoebe knowingly smiled and said, "Your wife doesn’t know about this yet. If she did, wouldn’t she confront you? I’m just not sure if it’s true, so I asked Mor to call your office to check."
On the other end, Shane seemed to have let out a chuckle, as if he didn’t quite believe Phoebe’s story.
Phoebe was about to argue further when a car’s headlights beamed their way. Under the glaring lights, Audrey squinted and saw the car approaching, becoming more familiar as it got closer.
Realizing what was happening, Audrey hastily pulled Phoebe away to hide behind a large stone pillar nearby.
But it seemed too late, as Phoebe heard Shane’s voice over the phone: "Where are you hiding?"
Phoebe was so startled that she nearly dropped her phone. She peeked out from behind the pillar and saw Shane’s car parked by the roadside in front of them, then watched him step out of the driver’s seat.
Audrey watched Shane walk straight towards her, feeling so embarrassed that she bit her lip, unsure of what to say.
Shane stood in front of the two, looked at Phoebe who had lied so smoothly on the phone, then at Audrey who shrank beside Phoebe, avoiding his gaze.
Phoebe forced a chuckle and said, "Hey Shane."
Shane returned a smile that gave goosebumps, "Weren’t you supposed to be in the restroom? Ended up at my company’s entrance?"
Phoebe dryly laughed, glanced at Shane, then at Audrey. Realizing that they had been caught, she decided she couldn’t keep up the pretense and made a run for it: "You guys chat, Audrey, I’ll wait for you in the car!"
Audrey: "..."
Shane looked down at her, a mix of amusement and exasperation on his face. It was cold and windy at this late hour, and he hadn’t expected her to pull such a stunt.
"Can’t see me for a day and start spinning stories?" Shane raised a hand to gently poke her forehead, mumbling confusedly: "What’s going on in that head of yours?"
Audrey, unprepared for his poke, stumbled back a couple of steps before steadying herself, pursed her lips and said, "I...I was just worried about you, came to check on you."
Shane pulled up her hood, adjusted the strings tighter, tying a knot as he said, "Worried about my health or worried I’m out messing around?"
Without thinking, Audrey said, "Of course, worried about your health, how could you possibly be out fooling around? I trust you completely."
Shane chuckled, looking at her, clearly not fooled by her words: "Now you’re finding help? Even got Phoebe and Mor in on it, buying off everyone around me?"
Audrey laughed guiltily: "Honey, what are you saying? I really wanted to surprise you, only to find out you were out, so I just said I’d wait here. Sister Phoebe insisted you were out playing around. I told her you probably just went out to buy something and would be back soon. It was her idea to call and test you, nothing to do with me. I’m two hundred percent confident in you."
Shane looked at her with a smirk, clearly holding a lot of doubt about her words.
He knew well enough the kind of person his wife was.
Lazy as Phoebe was, if Audrey hadn’t said she wanted to come, Phoebe wouldn’t have come out for sure.
Audrey didn’t know if she’d managed to convince him, so she looked at Shane with a sincere expression and asked, "So where did you go this late?"
Shane lifted his hand in front of her, revealing a spot on the back of his hand where a bandage was placed, replying, "Went to the pharmacy."
Audrey quickly grabbed his hand, worriedly asking, "What happened? Did you get hurt?"
Shane: "Accidentally got scratched by a metal piece, so I went to the pharmacy for some alcohol and band-aids. If I’d known you’d come checking up, I wouldn’t have left."
Audrey pouted and corrected, "I already said I wasn’t checking up, just came to see you."
Shane didn’t insist on correcting her further. He pinched her face that was cold from the wind and said, "Go back and rest soon, no need for unnecessary fuss."
Audrey reluctantly looked at him, "...Then I’ll go."
Shane nodded, "Go soak your feet in hot water before bed, that way your bed won’t feel cold."
Audrey murmured an "Hmm," walked a couple of steps toward where Phoebe’s car was parked, but suddenly stopped and turned back to him, saying, "I’m kind of thirsty, want some water."
Shane eyed her, unsure what trick she was up to this time, watching as she already turned back.
Shane didn’t say anything, leading her into the company.
There was a place for water on the first floor of the company. Just as Shane was about to get some, Audrey said, "I want water from your office."
Without a word, Shane glared at her.
Audrey cautiously glanced at him, whispering, "I think the water from your office is sweeter."
Shane coldly exposed her feeble excuse: "It’s the same brand."
