Chapter 271: Chapter 271: He Gave Up on Me

Phoebe King said rather pessimistically, "To put it bluntly, he just doesn’t feel anything for me. Even someone who’s never been in love, if they meet someone who moves their heart, they’ll naturally overcome that barrier. I guess he and I just aren’t fated. I’m just not meant to be your sister-in-law."

Audrey Sutton joked, "I have several brothers! If this one doesn’t work, switch to another."

Phoebe King laughed, "That’d be so awkward! Couldn’t catch you, so I’m going for your sister-in-law spot?"

"So are you planning to give up on my big brother now?"

"It’s not that I’m giving up on him; it’s that he’s giving up on me. Sometimes I don’t even understand why I’m so eager to be with him. Besides being a bit handsome, he’s cold, unfriendly, and not humorous. What do I actually like about him?"

"If you can clearly articulate why, it wouldn’t be called liking." Just like with Shane Warner, if Audrey Sutton were forced to point out what she liked about him, she couldn’t explain it.

Now she could list a ton of his personality flaws, but she just really liked him.

It seems when you like someone, this viewpoint gradually becomes an unconscious inner understanding, and as long as he doesn’t cross certain bounds, you can tolerate much about him, wholeheartedly wanting to be with him.

Phoebe King seemed conflicted, saying she didn’t want to pursue Shaun anymore, but thinking about Stephen Sutton’s singleness, she was reluctant.

She always held onto a bit of hope, thinking if she worked a little harder, maybe a turn of events could occur.

If she really lets go, then he’s inevitably going to belong to another woman.

Anyway, she hadn’t cared about being embarrassed in front of him for a long time, so she might as well be thick-skinned and give it another shot.

But if she kept on pursuing him and another girl appeared in his life, she’d willingly let go.

After Audrey Sutton returned home, she took out her phone and saw from the lock screen a new message on WhatsApp.

Shane Warner must’ve replied, Audrey hurriedly unlocked the screen with her fingerprint and tapped into the WhatsApp page.

Indeed, there were two messages from him, and also from Nolan Hawke.

She first opened Shane Warner’s chat, seeing his reply was: Did you drink?

The next day, it followed up with: Where are you?

Audrey didn’t know how he guessed she drank. Probably he thought her saying "I miss you" was just drunken rambling.

After all, she had never been this straightforward with him.

Even when he traveled for work and she missed him, she’d usually find some irrelevant topics to chat about, never directly saying she missed him.

Audrey replied via voice message, "I didn’t drink. I was just at my mom’s for dinner. I’m just home now; what are you up to?"

After replying, she waited for two seconds and didn’t see his name change to typing status, so Audrey closed the page and checked Nolan Hawke’s messages.

Originally expecting talk about the artsy photoshoot, she saw instead he asked: "Miss Sutton, are you free tonight?"

Seeing it was already ten minutes past the message time, Audrey typed back: What’s up, Boss Hawke?

Nolan Hawke quickly replied: My friend saw the group of photos you shot with Bear and wants to invite you as a model, thinking you perfectly fit the style he wants to shoot.

Before Audrey could type a response, Nolan sent another voice message: "I told him you’re not a full-time model, but he asked me to invite you, really hoping to collaborate with you once. I also told him you’re Third Young Master Warner’s wife, and you might not have time for a shoot, yet he insisted I ask."

After listening to Nolan, Audrey felt it wasn’t an unreasonable request, especially since he had helped her before.

Hesitantly, she replied: But I’m not a professional, and I’m afraid of disappointing him. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Her response was tactful; deep down, Audrey wasn’t keen to get involved, especially since she wasn’t familiar with the other person.

To be precise, she wasn’t very familiar with Nolan Hawke either.

Nolan: "No problem, I think your last shoot was pretty good. They’ll show you the poses; if you have time, can you drop by now? We’re in the pub near your school here, and I’ll pick you up at the door. My friend wants to discuss the shoot with you."

Audrey glanced at the time, almost nine o’clock.

She also saw in the girlfriend group chat that Barry Barrett was gaming in the dorm, not with Nolan.

Audrey was still a bit cautious, so she said, "It’s too late today; my husband doesn’t let me go out at night. How about tomorrow during the day? We can find a restaurant outside school for lunch and chat?"

Nolan agreed readily: "Sure, see you tomorrow then, Miss Sutton."

Audrey pursed her lips, feeling something wasn’t quite right.

Soon after, Nolan sent a two-character message: Good night.

Audrey believed "Good night" was something you say to someone close, but Nolan used it so naturally, likely just a polite formality; she didn’t dwell on it.

She reread their chat from start to finish, finding no clues of anything untoward.

It should be purely a collaboration request; she was somewhat paranoid thanks to Clarissa Morgan.

After finishing the chat with Nolan Hawke, Shane Warner’s call came through.

Audrey paused before hitting the answer button. Neither used the video call feature, just hearing his voice coming through the phone: "Missed me?"

Audrey didn’t answer directly but asked him instead: "What were you doing? Barely responding now."

Shane: "Just showering, still waiting for your answer."

Audrey felt typing and speaking were completely different things. While typing, it didn’t feel embarrassing, but speaking made her shy.

So she feigned ignorance: "What question? Did you have dinner?"

The topic shifted so awkwardly that Shane chuckled: "I did."

Audrey continued, "Oh, Boss Hawke just reached out to me."

Meeting Shane’s few acts of cold anger, Audrey decided to be honest about these matters.

"What did he want?"

Audrey straightforwardly recounted Nolan’s request.

After listening, Shane said, "We’ll discuss it once I’m back."

His understanding of Nolan was vague; naturally, he hoped Audrey wouldn’t engage unnecessarily, but he knew Audrey.

Nolan was Bear’s boyfriend, a relationship Shane understood the strength of, so Nolan’s request, with Bear’s connection, made it tough for Audrey to refuse outright.

"But we already planned to have lunch tomorrow to talk about it," Audrey’s tone was somewhat frustrated, clearly seeking his advice and waiting for his arrangement.
