Chapter 270: Chapter 270: She Deserves It

Audrey Sutton feels that expressing her feelings regularly is quite necessary.

She can’t just keep quiet because Shane Warner does.

She thinks she should be the one to set an example, slowly guiding Shane Warner.

But, staring at the words "I miss you," she feels a bit embarrassed by how straightforward they are and starts guessing what his reaction might be when he sees them.

Wondering if he’s still busy, he hasn’t replied.

"Audrey, where’s your brother’s room?" Phoebe King leaned over to ask her.

Audrey instinctively pointed upstairs: "Go upstairs, turn right, the third room."

Once she finished speaking, Phoebe King quickly got up and headed upstairs.

Inside the room, Stephen Sutton had changed into a set of white home clothes and was standing by the wardrobe organizing his clothes.

"Knock, knock—" There was a knock at the door.

Just knocking without saying who it was, Stephen Sutton guessed who it was.

He pretended not to hear and ignored it.

"Knock, knock—" Two seconds later, the knocking resumed.

Stephen Sutton continued folding the clothes in his hands, acting as though he hadn’t heard it.

"Dinner is ready. Auntie asked you to come down to eat." Phoebe King said through the door.

With her ear pressed against the door, she heard nothing.

Not getting a response, Phoebe King felt a bit discouraged.

She knew he must have heard but deliberately didn’t answer.

Standing outside for several seconds, the door remained shut, and he still didn’t come out.

She simply said outside the door, as if speaking to herself: "... Come down quickly to eat."

Unsure if he heard, Phoebe King sighed softly and turned to go downstairs.

She thought that after such a long time, he should believe that their first meeting was just a misunderstanding and the offensive things she said were just a joke.

But he remained indifferent to her; probably he really was annoyed with her.

The dishes were mostly on the table when Stephen Sutton finally came down.

During dinner, Phoebe King sat beside Audrey Sutton, while Stephen Sutton seemed to deliberately choose a seat farthest from her, quietly eating, not speaking much.

"Stephen, how was the exam you mentioned before? Is it over?" Hazel Yates directed the topic to Stephen Sutton.

Stephen Sutton nodded, responding concisely: "It’s done."

"And do you know about your brother’s issue at school?"

Stephen Sutton glanced at Norman Sutton, then shook his head: "What issue?"

Hazel Yates said: "It’s about that girl; I heard she might be from your school too."

Stephen Sutton: "Ask Six directly about this. I haven’t heard anything."

The conversation naturally shifted to Norman Sutton. He paused while gnawing on ribs, faced with his parents’ questioning eyes, he placed the ribs on his bowl, wiped his hands with a wet tissue, and said reluctantly, "Oh come on, why are you asking so much? It’s a personal grudge between her and me."

Hazel Yates: "Personal grudge? Did you cause some trouble outside?"

Samuel Sutton: "Speak clearly."

Norman Sutton: "Why are you two so nosy? She messed up the computer and can’t afford to pay, so I let her work to pay off the debt."

These words seemed half-true, but Audrey Sutton thought Norman Sutton would indeed do such a thing, given his petty nature.

However, based on her years of watching romance dramas, Audrey Sutton suspected Norman Sutton had some interest in that girl.

Most likely, the labor debt is just an excuse.

Hazel Yates: "She probably can’t afford it due to a hard situation at home, and it wasn’t intentional. How can you be so unforgiving? She’s still a student, right? Now working is interfering with her studies? Moreover, didn’t you ask your brother for money to fix the computer? Aren’t you supposed to be a grown man? How can you demand sympathy without forgiveness?"

Norman Sutton muttered: "She deserved it, needs a lesson."

The fourth brother knowingly smiled and pierced through: "Seems like you’re interested in her, huh?"

"I have no feelings for her!" Norman Sutton seemed to panic, his face turning red.

Hazel Yates also laughed, teasing: "If you really like her, how about inviting her home for a meal and you let her work on the farm?"

Norman Sutton raised his voice a bit: "I don’t like her! You guys are so annoying!"

Audrey Sutton: "Which department is she from? I’ll meet my future sister-in-law at school tomorrow."

Norman Sutton: "Get lost!"

Samuel Sutton glared, "Who are you swearing at?!"

Hazel Yates turned to Stephen Sutton and said: "As the oldest, keep an eye on Six at school."

Stephen Sutton replied slowly: "He’s not young anymore, he has some sense."

Hazel Yates: "Even at 30, your dad and I still worry about you. Your brother is naturally naughty, so don’t let him stir up trouble at school."

Stephen Sutton could already sense what Hazel Yates would say next, so he chose to remain silent.

"You’re getting older. You don’t want to go on blind dates, there’s no shortage of girls around you, yet you don’t like any. I think waiting for you to have someone you like and then talk about marriage might take forever. As your mom, hear me out: if there’s a girl who likes you, try accepting it. You can’t just never make a move and reject those who do. You’ll end up single forever."

Though Hazel Yates didn’t say it openly, it was clear she was speaking on behalf of Phoebe King.

Stephen Sutton simply gave an indifferent "Hmm," bowed his head to eat, still not glancing at Phoebe King. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Phoebe King seemed a bit disheartened too, appearing less talkative than before, often looking preoccupied.

Even when joking, it felt forced.

Audrey Sutton understood well the feeling of chasing someone desperately with no response, feeling powerless, want to give up but unwilling, wanting to continue but finding it hopeless.

The internal struggle and dilemma torment oneself, even though retreating is a decision one can make alone, yet one is still caught in a difficult position.

After dinner, Audrey Sutton rode in Phoebe King’s car to leave.

In the car, Phoebe King shared some heartfelt words with Audrey Sutton, saying she was thinking of giving up.

"Honestly, I’ve never been so persistent about anyone or anything before, nor have I lowered myself to chase someone like this. Initially, I was confident that, with more interaction and understanding, he’d change his view about me, but now it seems..."

Audrey Sutton wasn’t sure how to comfort her. Although she hoped Phoebe King could be with her brother, seeing his attitude, continuing to encourage her would only bring Phoebe King pain and difficulty.

"Honestly, I don’t know why my brother is like this. I don’t think he dislikes you, but it seems he has no concept of romance, as if it’s a barrier he never tried to overcome. So instinctively, he resists the idea of romance and is unwilling to engage with it."
