Chapter 172: Chapter 172: He Is Her Remedy

The car stopped below the hospital, and as Audrey Sutton paid the fare and alighted, snowflakes mixed with rain were falling from the sky.

She fastened the hood of her coat, and jogged across the parking area into the hospital.

Perhaps Shane had given advance notice, as Audrey Sutton had just arrived at the hospital lobby when she saw Lucian Quinn waiting at the entrance.

Lucian Quinn merely nodded at her in acknowledgment, without saying anything, and led her to Shane’s hospital room.

He obviously had other matters to attend to, handing Audrey Sutton off at the door before turning to leave.

Audrey Sutton pushed the door open and saw Shane lying on the hospital bed, watching her.

Wearing hospital clothes, he looked slightly haggard, yet his dark eyes were bright with a teasing smile, and he rasped, "You’re here? Didn’t even bring a bouquet of flowers?"

Audrey Sutton entered the room empty-handed. Seeing his mood was light enough to tease her, she stopped worrying and replied, "I thought your room might be full of flowers already."

Shane chuckled and beckoned her over, "Come here."

Audrey Sutton puzzledly walked forward, noticing his left hand hooked up to an IV drip, while his right hand, having beckoned her, extended towards her, "My arm itches, help me scratch it."

Audrey Sutton paused, carefully noting that he wasn’t joking.

Seeing his left hand indeed bound by the IV, Audrey Sutton circled around the bed to his right side, "Where does it itch?"

"The elbow area."

Audrey Sutton lifted his arm, rolled up his sleeve a bit, and gently scratched the inner side of his elbow, asking, "Is it here?"

"A bit higher."

She moved up a little, and heard his soft voice say, "That’s it."

Audrey Sutton carefully scratched his arm, outwardly calm, though her mind was in turmoil.

His arm had striking contours, slightly hardened from frequent exercise; perhaps it was her cold hands, but his arm felt particularly warm.

She was reluctant to stop scratching, though feeling awkward, so she asked, "Is this okay now?"

Shane nodded, and Audrey Sutton blushingly lowered his sleeve.

"Why are your hands so cold?" he asked.

Audrey Sutton sat down at the bedside chair, muttering, "It’s really cold outside, the snow here isn’t as much as in Rivia, but I feel it’s colder than Rivia."

After finishing, she saw Shane lifting a corner of the blanket with his right hand, sincere in expression and tone, "It’s warm inside, want to put them in?"

Audrey Sutton felt Shane was flirting with her, though she had no proof.

She longed to slip her hands under the blanket for warmth, but acted reserved, saying, "No need, there’s heating inside, it’ll warm up soon."

Feeling uneasy under his gaze, Audrey Sutton deliberately shifted her eyes and glanced around.

Spotting a bag of fruit at the bedside, Audrey Sutton pointed and asked him, "Who bought this?"

"Mor, take whatever you want."

Audrey Sutton eyed the box of strawberries in the bag, chuckled and took it out, rinsing it in the bathroom.

She tasted one first, then handed one to Shane, "It’s really sweet, try it."

Shane’s preference was not for such tart-sweet things, but for her sake, he opened his mouth to eat one, then asked, "Did you skip lunch?"

"I ate at the airport," she replied, tossing another into her mouth and offering one to him again.

This time, Shane waved it away, "You eat it."

"Is it not good?"

"It’s okay."

Audrey Sutton pouted, stuffing the strawberry into her own mouth, and didn’t ask him again.

"Why did you decide to come find me?" Shane asked her.

Audrey Sutton paused mid-chew, and casually said, "It’s the weekend, holidays are idle anyway."

Shane smiled, aware she likely came out of concern for him, wondering when she might be more honest about it.

But the feeling of someone caring is genuinely nice.

He thought, if not for real affection, who would learn of his hospitalization and instantly buy a plane ticket, traveling thousands of miles to keep him company?

Lying alone in the hospital room, he really missed her.

Though not a medical professional, her presence offered comfort even if just talking or watching her.

She felt like a personal remedy just for him.

"I thought you came specifically to care for me, and was thinking of covering your airfare, but since you’re here to play, just pay it yourself."

Audrey Sutton heard this and immediately complained, "If booked a few days earlier, it might’ve been only four or five hundred, today it’s one thousand eight."

Shane teased, "Then you’re quite the adventurer if you come despite the quad price hike."

Audrey Sutton was at a loss; it was clearly all for him, not for play.

This annoying man, even bedridden, wouldn’t stop irritating her. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Audrey Sutton stayed through several IV drips until past four o’clock in the afternoon.

Yawning, she stood to stretch, watching Shane sit up from bed, don slippers, and get down.

Audrey Sutton quickly asked, "What are you doing? Need help?"

"Restroom." He said, turning to smile at her, "Wanna come?"

Audrey Sutton rolled her eyes, muttering, "Jerk."

After the IVs were done, doctors came in for a check-up, and confirmed everything was fine, granting discharge.

Outside was too cold, with Shane’s cold not completely gone, Audrey Sutton had no intention to wander outside, following him straight to the hotel.

After dinner, both took showers and lay on the large bed.

As usual, taking half each, under separate covers.

Audrey Sutton, sleepy from the afternoon, dozed off quickly after scrolling her phone.

Shane, reflecting on her day’s efforts for him, felt heartache for her.

If not for Lucian Quinn, he probably wouldn’t have informed her, wishing to spare her worry.

Yet knowing she intended to visit lifted his spirits.

Her Monday exam meant she’d have to leave tomorrow, while he couldn’t go back before Tuesday.

Not wanting her to feel lonely in travel, but unable to join her.

His hand instinctively reached out, gently touched her cheek, raised himself, and lovingly kissed her forehead.

In her sleep, she lay motionless, breathing steadily, deeply asleep.

Shane turned off the bedside lamp, closing his eyes.

Having slept early, Audrey Sutton awoke early too.

For the first time, awakening to find him still beside her; usually, she’d wake to find him gone.
