Chapter 2012: Chapter 1989: Trivial Matters

A reunion and a happy lunch.

When the atmosphere was lively, Natalia added some food to Gao Yang’s plate, looked at him with concern, and said, "I heard that you’ve settled matters back home and your parents are fine now. They can come, right?"

Gao Yang nodded with a smile, looking happy, "That’s right, the preliminary work is still ongoing and might take some more time, but for now, there shouldn’t be any issues. Once the time is ripe, they can come over."

Natalia, who cared a lot about her future son-in-law, was very pleased to receive a definite response from Gao Yang, and said loudly, "That’s great news, let’s all drink a toast for this."

Yelena asked with concern, "So when will they be totally fine and able to come here?"

Yelena was also very concerned about when Gao Yang’s parents could come, because when that time came, Gao Yang surely wouldn’t have to go to the battlefield anymore, right?

Gao Yang shrugged, exhaled a breath, and said with a bit of helplessness, "Well, it still needs time, not sure if it can be this year, but next year it’s definitely not a problem. They’ve promised me, at most one year, all matters will be settled. There are many things to handle under absolute confidentiality, so it takes longer. But now, I can bring my parents at any time, though, I want them to come with clear and free identities."

Things are certainly not as simple as Gao Yang said; it’s a large and complicated plan. Some things can be done but cannot be spoken about.

Gao Yang looked at Cui Bo and Li Jinfang, enthusiastically saying, "What’s your plan, Rabbit? Are you going to bring your family over?"

Cui Bo put down his chopsticks and laughed, "Nah, my mom and dad wouldn’t adapt. They don’t know anyone here, only foreigners, no one to talk to. Relatives and friends are all at home, they won’t come. But they might come here to visit for a while, what about you, Jinfang?"

Li Jinfang frowned slightly and said, "Haven’t decided yet, let’s see how it goes when everything’s settled, but I think my parents wouldn’t stay here long term either. Visiting occasionally should be fine."

Anyway, solving issues back home is just a matter of time. Thinking of this always brings Gao Yang joy, he laughed, "I’ll choose a place and buy a house soon, can’t have them staying in hotels when they come, right? It’s something to consider."

With the topic lightened, Gao Yang turned to Yelena, softly laughing, "How’s your studies going?"

Gao Yang didn’t want the mood of the first meal back to be ruined; since he had a girlfriend who’s still a student, it’s best to ask about her studies. Mainly, he wanted to know when Yelena would graduate.

Yelena thought for a moment, then smiled sweetly, "Very well, oh, there’s something I want to ask you. You said you’d marry me when I graduate, right?"

This promise, Gao Yang remembered, how could Yelena forget.

Gao Yang paused with his chopsticks, froze for a moment, hesitated just a tiny bit, then seeing Yelena’s displeased glance, he instantly said, "Of course, how could I forget such a thing."

Yelena pursed her lips, then smiled, "Then, my graduation should be based on my undergraduate course, right?"

Gao Yang immediately nodded, "Yes, undergraduate it is, pursuing a master’s doesn’t count."

Yelena let out a tiny sigh and regretfully said in a low voice, "According to my study plan, I should graduate in the summer after next year."

Two more years to go, somehow, Gao Yang’s heart relaxed a bit, but he showed a slightly apologetic look on his face, "Oh, that long?"

Yelena smiled sweetly and nodded, "Yes, I think it’s too long too, so I’ve been working very hard. That’s why I think I can graduate by next summer."

"Ah?"

Gao Yang was taken aback, and then quickly said, "That’s great! Wonderful!"

Yelena looked at Gao Yang, lightly playing with her knife and fork, softly said, "You don’t seem quite happy."

Gao Yang immediately said, "Not at all! I’m just really surprised. How could you graduate so early?"

Yelena stared at Gao Yang and said gently, "If graduating early can help you and dad leave dangerous lives behind, I must try my best to graduate sooner. Unfortunately, I really wanted to graduate this year, but I couldn’t manage it."

Gao Yang didn’t quite know what to say. Now imagining a future of leaving the battlefield forever filled him with a sense of fear, which is very strange because it’s normal to be scared while going to war, isn’t it?

Seeing Gao Yang went silent, Yelena leaned towards him and whispered, "This is your promise. You surely wouldn’t break your word, right?"

Remembering the vow Yelena once made, Gao Yang smiled wryly, "Of course not, how could I forget? I promise, I will definitely marry you on your graduation ceremony."

Yelena gave a sweet smile, and then looked at Gao Yang and whispered, "Catherine refused the TV station’s offer, she’s doing research at the university. As for Adele, she came back, which you knew, but I bet you didn’t know she’s going back to school."

Gao Yang was stunned for a moment, then said softly, "Ah, going back to school? How many PhDs does she have, and she’s studying again?"

Yelena sighed, looking helpless, "Yes, we really don’t understand the world of geniuses. Adele is now very interested in biology, and she feels that studying is probably her most suitable career. In school, she easily gets scholarships that allow her to live well, so Adele is pursuing courses in molecular biology and cell biology. She’s looking to get a new PhD."

Imagining Adele with a doctoral cap, each hand holding one yet still unable to show all her achievements across vastly different fields, Gao Yang shook his head, "You’re a genius too, graduating early from Juilliard School is amazing, but Adele is otherworldly."

Yelena looked at Gao Yang, then softly said, "Catch up with them if you have time, have a meal together; they’re concerned too, with your job and all..."

Before finishing her sentence, Yelena shook her head, then softly laughed to Gao Yang and said, "Just meet them if you can."

Gao Yang nodded with a very calm expression and said, "Alright, but I’ll be quite busy these few days, we’ll see."
